View Full Version : Buying an H3 - questions and issues

Hi All,
I am looking into buying an H3 and ran into the following bigger and minor issues:
Engine:
little bit underpowered.
Hopefully solved throu a Diesel.
Automatic transmission:
5 gears would be nicer... also for fuel economy
Rear seats:
They dont fold down flat. Bad if you want to sleep in the car on a trip or if you have some real heavy load.
Limited sight:
That's the way it is, I guess. If you like the car for its looks, you have to live with that.
Finally a question regarding the computer:
The computers on other trucks feature infos like average gas milage, current gas milage, average speed, miles left on the tank. Is it the same on the H3?
I am really courious in how far these are actual issues in daily life. Any feedback welcome.
Thank you,
Marc

Maybe the H3 isn't the vehicle for you. Don't know of any changes coming soon to meet your issues.

You might want to look into purchasing a nice mountain bike with trip computer.

Already have a mtn bike and want an h3? Someone is sure living in excess.
How are you even considering the h3 after all the problems you believe it has? Usually you knock the vehicle off the list if it doesn't suit your needs and go on to the next one.
I think you be better off trying to get McDonalds to make their french fries taste like corn.

Read carefully: "I am really courious in how far these are actual issues in daily life. Any feedback welcome."
In this sense - if I understand you right - you try to tell me the following in an inarticulate way:
- No, the engine is just fine.
- 5 gears would be nice, but I am fine with 4 too.
- The rear seats might not be ideal, but I didn't run into problems so far.
- I never missed the features of a trip computer.
- if you don't like the hummer how it is, GFY.
- and its freedom fries, not french fries.
Well, if you mean it this way, you helped me quite a lot. Thank you Sir.
sincerely,
Treehugger
Thank you for the info, Green Lantern.

Seriously, if the H3 has so many issues from your POV, why even ask if you should still get one? Is there any reason you should get one? NO and honestly it would be better for all of us if you didn't since you might feel some entitlement on this forum after your purchase and then start a bunch of whiny-ass threads about how mena everyone is and how you just want info and can't someone moderate the forum....waaaaaaa....http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am not complaining about anyone. I think its fun. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Seriously. I try to find a desicion if the H3 is able to replace our current car and add the offroad aspect on top, or if I need to keep our current car and get the H3 additionaly for me mainly/exclusivly for offroading. That's basically it.
To specify it further:
- Has anyone heard that the Diesel is actually coming and when?
- Has anyone heard if they are planning on a 5 Gear transmission?
- Has anyone ever had any broken hinges or damage seats because of the seats not folding down completly?
cheerz,
Marc

The windows are maybe my biggest concern. My wife already hit poles on two parking lots with our car. That makes a total of 4000$ damage so far.
What I read so far about the limited sight on this forum is probably one of the biggest arguments to keep our car for her and buy the H3 just for me.

No the H3 is not the vehicle for you at this point.

Your wife hit poles, in two parking lots? Stationary poles, that never move. My suggestion is to take away her drivers license and don't even let her ride in a car again. I'd hate to see the mayhem once you let her out on the roads with moving objects.
And because you said freedom fries, you are not right for anything hummer. Try a honda or toyota.

Did your wife hurt himself? Maybe his neck was sore and he couldn't look out the window properly?

This is CLEARLY true. Marc.. Forgive the neanderthals here... They know not what they do... Actually... a few of them do... They are just a$$holes. Ignore them.
Yes... The H3 is a little underpowered* but you get used to it. Or you can make mods to it to not only make it a little peppier but also increase your gas mileage. The supercharger is the ultimate option! (Though not for increased gas mileage!) If you have the coin... It may be worth a look.
The automatic transmission does fine if you live in a somewhat flat area. If you live in a mountainous region... You will be constantly dropping into a lower gear and the engine will work like hell to get you there. Still not too bad... But something to think about.
The rear seat doesn't fold down flat* but they do come somewhat close. If you need a flat bed this won't work unless you remove the rear seats. There is another thread around here that shows removing the rear seats to make it flat. Rather extreme... But if that is what you need... It can be done... But not on a regular basis I would think.
Limited sight*... It does have a limited view from the driver's seat. This can be compensated for with spot mirrors and/or a back-up camera.
There is limited onboard computer function*... You DO have OnStar though which will keep you informed of your vehicle status on a monthly basis. If the "check engine" light comes on.. Just call them and they will tell you what is wrong! There are aftermarket Nav systems that can tie in with your onboard computer to give you this info though... It may be an option for you... If you want the added expense.
* These issues are minor (to me)... If you drive the H3 you will LOVE it and all the rest will not matter. You will simply not care! It is a fun truck to drive... I no longer mind being stuck in rush hour traffic!

Way to clutter the board with useless information.
I only have one thing to say. My hubby did not want the H3 AT ALL. He was a hater from day 1. HOWEVER since I've picked mine up on monday- I've let him drive it only once and he is constantly bugging me to let him drive it now. He loves it. Probably not as much as me but at least he's happy we have it. So what if the engine is a little underpowered. If ya want a fast car- buy a sports car. You need the seats to fold flat- buy a truck. Who cares about visibility- you get used to it afterwhile. Hell mine is less than a week old and I'm a pro!
You either love the H3 or ya don't. There is no middle ground. I personally think everyone should have one http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thank you Rick,
This info really helps me a lot.
Since I live in the alps, I think, I will wait for the Diesel. Too much mountains around here...
I really like the H3 for its looks and its abilities. But I do realize, that it wouldn't make sense to replace our current car, since the H3 - even thou its the perfect car for what it was intended for - might not be able to completely replace it, since our current car is more of a family hauler/ highway cruiser with hi MPG. Nobody could expect that from an offroader.
Btw... Don't worry about the Neandertals. If you didn't learn to live with jerks, you didn't learn to live at all. I don't care. That is why I chose European_Liberal as a nick. It polarizes and exposes who's a jerk and who not... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Dani,
That are some clear words and I agree, this sums it up pretty well and supports my decission to keep our current car parallel to the H3.

Believe me, I didn't marry me wife for her driving skills. Her abilities are in a different field. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Paragon,
I used to live and work in L.A. for 3 years. Legally. When the INS (you know what that is, do you?) granted my visa, they wrote something like: "the visa is issued because this individual offers artistic abilites that can not be found in the US." I think that this is a bit exaggerated, but when it comes to double negative, it seems your government knows its math, knows that double negative means a big plus. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I don't need Luxury. I need a tool for daily life. I need to haul my family, I need to haul equipement, I need to cruise mountain highways, climb up mountains and even on glaciers. I need to cruise highways on the flatlands and drive in heavy city traffic.

When you start a post with "European Liberal," right away many of us will ignore the thread, or answer with some 'off-color' answers, believing a troll has arrived. If you are not a troll, and an actual European Liberal; great for you, but when selecting a name that you know will obtain remarks such as you received, is not too intelligent on your part. It doesn't take a brain scientist to understand this forum leans to the US conservative side of the political spectrum. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
But, just in case you are not a troll, I'll answer some of your questions.
The 5-cylinder Isuzu diesel will be arriving sometime in Europe. Being an export, not sure exactly when, but it is a go.
The 4L70 trans is strong as hell, and the 5- and 6-speeds that GM offers will also downshift in the mountains. It not as much a problem with the trans as a problem with the HP and the weight of the vehicle.
The engine/trans combo does ok in the high mountains, but remember, you lose HP as you increase in altitude, so the '07 with more HP would be more beneficial, since I would guess the diesel will downshift quite a bit too. More torque, but at cruising speeds you are looking for HP, not necessarily torque.
Don't believe OnStar is available in Europe; not sure, so I would advise you to check first on this feature. I figure my fuel mileage and miles remaining based on the trip odometer and knowing a rough estimate of how much fuel I have, and I'm accurate within a mile per gallon or a few miles till empty. Easy to do these calculations in my head with my 4th grade education.

Hi F5Fstop,
Well, I am what you would call a European Liberal, but since the European political spectrum is a little bit different, it might not be exactly comparable to a US Liberal.
Your point is not that I am using a political nickname, but rather a political nickname that doesn't match the opinion of the majority of the people here. This in itself is a questionable point.
I would understand this, if I logged onto a forum of the republican party. But since this is a Hummer forum and 99% of the people here come from countries that respect the freedom of speech, it shouldn't be a big deal to be a liberal. Is it? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Anyhow. No trolling, just finding a decision.
Buying a car is a big deal - lot of money. So I think its just right to ask questions. Asking questions can never be stupid. And who might be better to ask than the ones who already own one. I don't see any mistake in that.
I thank you for the Info. Its the most valuable I got so far.
Isuzu is building good workhorse diesels, so I guess its the right decision to wait for that. If the engine is close to other diesels with 200HP it could have as much as 400-450 torque. That would surely be nice. The diesel I've got now has approx. the same size and makes 30-34 MPG on the Highway (same car weight), which would be really nice for the H3...
I wouldn't be surprised if GM uses the 5speed for the diesel, since the diesels usually have a lower spectrum of RPM. For that reason I think it will be more shifting than with the gas engine/4speed combination anyway.
Cruising speed is not an issue for me. Even on the German Autobahn I am ussually not going faster than 85mph.
OnStar is not available in Europe. People here don't like the idea that someone else is monitoring their car. They rather have all the information availbale for themselves on the onboard computer.
I must admit thou, that I am surprised that GM didn't include the trip computer feature on the H3. It takes nearly no additinal hardware and the calculation power of a pocket calculator. Not important at all, but a nice little feature.
Don't get me wrong guys. I am just trying to find a decision. I know, that you love your H3s and I really don't want to offend anybody by asking questions that might be obvious if you already own one. I don't (yet).
cheerz,
Marc
Marc... They didn't include the trip computer because this doesn't get 20+ MPG all the time. The last thing they want is you tuning into the 16 MPG that you are getting!

LOL http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I can see that... I saw a british car review once where they used the kick down on the H2. The driver was completly stunned when the trip computer went down to 1 MPG. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Btw: the journalist really liked the H2. He said, the H2 reminds you of what you loved about cars in the first place when you where a boy... "Every ride is an event." Actually an entertaining review.

And like others have said, ignore those of use who cant respond intelligently. Your alright with me Mr. Liberal (Although maybe not politically), anyone who can dish it back out here with something more intelligent than "Im rubber your glue" is ok with me.

Finally a question regarding the computer:
The computers on other trucks feature infos like average gas milage, current gas milage, average speed, miles left on the tank. Is it the same on the H3?
I am really courious in how far these are actual issues in daily life. Any feedback welcome.

Sowwy we hurt your wittle fewlings. But, you did sign your posts "Treehugger" on more than one occasion. The same treehuggers that attack our vehicles because they are too cowardly to confront the owners. Bad move on your part, as well as the name. I'm not a political person, but I just don't like your name, your avatar, or your attitude! Reminds me way too much of early troll/treehuggers, and for good reason.
You can find all this information by using the Find button, give it a try. These questions come up every week.

LOL. Reading throu your post, it seems I hurt your "wittle fewlings" more than you did mine. If you follow the history of this thread, you'll notice that I started to sign me posts with 'treehugger' in response to your use of stereotypes.
btw: If I sign my posts with 'treehugger' this would be either quite ironic (you know what that means?) if I am not a treehugger or very uncowardly confronting if I was one. You decide.

Your arguing symantics, not intelligence. Just because I havent placed an apostrophe appropriately proves nothing. It just means I chose not to put it there, at worst you can call me lazy.. When someone asks an intelligent question and you start responding "go away dumbass", thats different. I do have to say I'm wrong, it has nothing to do with intelligence but more with maturity. Anyhow, my point is there is no reason to start acting like your twelve when making a point about something. I'm not sure where all this pent up anger comes from. Personally I think some people just act like this to stir the pot a little. Maybe they dont have enough to do at home, lol.
I love the H3 otherwise I wouldnt have purchased it, and I wouldnt be here. I just think there is better ways to prove a point.

Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands, but that's my positive, and not yours!
I didn't claim it was a spelling contest, but we can't have people running around here lying about things such as not using apostrophes in their post, when clearly they did. If we did, who could we trust?

Just to clearify: When I am buying a car, I do research of possible drawbacks and shortcomings of that car. That way I avoid disappointment or bad surprises when I finally get it.
No car is perfect the question is only if you are willing or able to live with the imperfections.
If I didn't like the car at all, I wouldn't even start to bother and waste my time asking questions.
I started this thread to get answers or even an open discussion to help me clear my sight what is really important to me and what I would have to live with if I buy an H3.

WTF are you ******* LIEBERALS going to piss & moan about when President George W. Bush is out of office? You shi.theads are going to be lost without him to give you an outlet for your whining. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
For the record (Not that it matters around here...) I have voted more times for Republicans than for Democrats... It's just that George Bush has the brain the size of a small walnut... John Kerry was no better... I'll give that.
We need to elect people who care about the nation first and not about their own self interest... But that won't happen in my lifetime. Those types are smarter that to get into politics!

hey rick,
i am interested in a nav that would be able to tie in with the vehicle computer and show a more detailed status of the vehicle. Not the MPG in particular, just anything more than the info display does currently. I was looking at getting the new pioneer avic-z1. do you have any idea if that would be able to show some vehicle info? if not or you dont know, which do you know of that can do something like that?
Thanks!

avic-z1 > all. Which reminds me, I need to go buy one to replace my n2.
These navi systems show info like, speed, slope, acceleration and side acceleration (how many g's you are pulling), voltage, compass, etc... doesn't calc mpg, but it can track miles driven and hours driven and whatnot.
BTW - you are very off-topic here marin, I think a new thread would be best.

You sons of bitches.
1. What makes you think we have a commie bastard in our mist?
2. Communism works; Liberalism doesn't. Plain and simple.
3. Communists and SUVs can co-exist; Liberals and SUVs can not co-exist.
And what is it with you, Rick & Crotch, bunch of bullies...are you mad that you can't steal our lunch money over the internet?
Is it too much to ask that you two liberal lovin', commie hatin', apostrophe abusin' bullies stay on topic and not continue to fill the board with useless cluter?
Thanks

Oh, Im sorry about the whole apostrophe thing. I didnt mean to offend. Here are some for when I dont use them (like the last few sentences for example). Feel free to throw them in any time I forget to, so you can sleep at night.

so,...are you getting an H3? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Definitely. But I'll wait for the Diesel and keep our current car for highway cruising and the higher load capacity.
I'll also keep our current car to have the H3 safe from my wife and kids.... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
They can ruin the old one while I am having fun with the H3.
Even thou it might bug some people here, I actually like this forum. Some of the guys here are quite battlesome, which is always a nice distraction from work. To be honest, I envy you guys, that you got a place like Moab. Here everything is so regulated and restricted, that you can only legally go offroading for professional reasons - if you are ranger, a lumber jack or from the army...
Quite regularly my friends and I end up in a car chase throu the forrest with a ranger behind our back trying to fine us. Quite funny actually as long as they dont get you.
