View Full Version : Man, I thought those guys were kidding about Hummers and frontal collisions

I'd heard the talk, and even seen a few pics, but I had personally never seen a fairly significant front/rear collision where one of the vehicles was caved in and the other one wasn't even scratched. Until this afternoon, anyway. My 16 year old son driving our H2 rear-ended a girl at a redlight, seriously caving in the entire rear of her VW Passat. Fortunately she wasn't injured (nor was he), but her car is going to need basically everything from the rear glass back. The officer who wrote up the report finished up with her car, walked over and looked at the front of the Hummer for 30 seconds or so, and then turned to me and said (with the look and sound of someone who had seen a UFO and just couldn't believe it), "I can't find any damage." It has a chrome brushguard, bumper, and tow hooks, and as best I can tell it doesn't have a mark on it. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it.

Yeah, I know, pics would convey what I said much better than words, but I didn't have a camera at the scene (and while I could take pics of the Hummer now that isn't going to show any damage).

Nope. The big shiny chrome towhooks are quite a bit larger than the stock ones, but I would have thought the chrome on everything would have been all scratched up at a minimum. The only thing I can figure is maybe since most everything on the back of her car that took the impact was rubber, plastic, or much thinner metal (bumper, tail lights, rear deck lid, etc.), there wasn't that much metal on metal contact. Plus that chrome stuff must be pretty heavy duty.

My advice...be ready to seek help from an attorney. There's a possibility that someone will get into that girl's head about filing a lawsuit. I've seen it happen on several occasions.

Then I suggest you sue her for "pain and suffering" that you had to endore by watching her Passat fall apart like a Mrs. Fields crumbcake! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Glad everyone is ok. I have seen a bunch of VW's in accidents and those cars sure can hold up.

I heard about an accident where a woman hit the back of an h1 at 45mph while the h1 was stopped at a red light. He had a bicycle on the back and his infant son in the back seat. The kid was asleep and never woke up. The cop was looking for the rider of the bike.

It had been raining hard, but had pretty much stopped, so he had his wipers on intermittent. As he was coming up on an intersection he ran through a puddle that was a lot deeper than he thought and it threw up a lot of water on his windshield. He got on the brakes and reached for the wipers, but apparently about that time she stopped (she was moving when the water came up), and he just didn't get stopped in time.

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I don't know what speed or collision force it takes to trigger one though. Plus even though the damage looked significant to the rear of her car, the impact speed may not have been very high at all when you have one car that didn't give at all and the other one did all of the crumpling.

Is it about 13mph? I've also heard 22mpg... I guess it depends on the manufacturer..

My wife had a similar accident in our Suburban with a brushguard on the front. Both were stopped at a stop sign turning right, the lady goes and then abruptly stops and my wife is looking to the left for on-coming traffic and steps on it. She hit the back to the Bonneville and caused over $5k in damages!! All from a standing start. It was the same, damaged to the rear window and all it did on ours was bend the license plate!

So HD, do I understand this correctly, you take pleasure in other peoples misfortune? May I ask why? Are you that filed with hate or jealousy or whatever you want to call it that you take pleasure in this? It is unfortunate for all involved that the accident ever happen but that is exactly what it was, an accident. That is what insurance is for. Anyone with half a brain realizes that the insurance will more than likely go up without you having to laugh and point it out. It is just so sad that you feel the need to do so http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

No, I laugh at a person that gives his 16 y/o son a 8K Lb MISSILE, and lets him run rampant on the street.

Face it, the accident can be contributed to 2 things:
1. Vehicle control. Had he been in control of the vehicle, the accident would not have happened.
2. Speed. A 8K Lb. vehicle traveling at 20 MPH takes around 35 feet to stop.

Now, I'm sure that the car was MORE than 35 feet in front of the H2, and that it was stopped DEAD. Had the CHILD been paying attention, the accident would not have happened.

Plain and simple. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Who said that he had total control of the vehicle or that driving had his undivided attention. Accidents don't happen without influences such as those or forces beyond your control such as the other driver. Doesn't matter if it was any 16 y/o or a 50 y/o if the person had a good driving record and was, for the most part at least, a careful drive, accidents happen. It is just sad that you such a weak minded person that you have to laugh about it. Bet if it happen to somebody's son over on your precious OT driving a vehicle you liked you wouldn't be saying the say thing. Claim all you want that you would but based on your posts here, it would be very unlikely.

You know, that stuff about a missile makes me want to put a blower on the H2. Then my son could really inflict some damage on the other poor saps out there. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif As Bugs Bunny often said, "what a maroon!"

What Alec said is exactly why my son is driving my H2 rather than one of the other lighter and much more powerful cars that I own. And my insurance is not only my business, it also won't go up for a number of reasons I have no desire to explain to a troll.

Red, why were you letting your 16yo run rampant in the city with an H2? What? Are you crazy?!?!?!?! HD is right, we should really be concerned about the other guy, not ourselves or our own family. I think you should teach your son a lesson and get him a yugo, or better yet, just a scooter. That way, if he's running rampant in the city again, he'll just kill himself and not someone else. God forbid if he were to hit a comanche on the road or something.... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

No offense intended but I get worried in the passenger seat when my WIFE drives the H2. She crowdes the right side. I can't even imagine giving it to either of my teenage sons...

Requires decision making maturity IMHO. It's not the typical vehicle when driven at speed or close quarters.

I can appreciate you all giving your H2 to your young prince and princesses, but I don't necessarily understand why you would....

Tell me about all the driving training they've had to handle a specialty vehicle and then I'd understand.

It's one thing to attack an opinion because it's mean-spirited or misinformed, but if the logic is right, why rationalize a response?
