Fuel tank?

I just picked up my '05 H2 SUT last week. After burning through the fist tank and filling up again I noticed that it only took 25 gallons. The low fuel light was on and the range said "low". Does the low fuel light actually come on with 7 gallons left?

I have a 2005 that, like clockwork, takes 25 gallons to fill every time.

It seems that yes, there's 7 gallons down there in the bottom of the tank at the time the light somes on in the 2005's h2's.

yeah, when my computer tells me I'm critically low...i fill up and get about 26-28 gallons ( depending on how much i stretch it )....

book says 33 gallon tank? right? thats another 20-60 miles? no?

I believe the book says 32 gallon tank capacity. My '03 is similar with about 6 gallons left when the light comes on.

Well given the fact that 3,4,5 or 6 gallons sounds like a lot, it's only 20 - 50 miles given high end figures. On the low side and towing across country that can be a long walk to a gas station if it did infact come on with just 1 - 2 gallons in the tank.

I've always figured the mileage on all 32 Gallons or 27 gallons used and bump up the MPG consumed accordingly.

Soooo our H2 gets 15.6 MPGC

I've heard that the gas is also used to cool the pump (in a seperate chamber?), and that if the tank runs completely dry, the pump would fail causing expensive repair.

Does it then make sense for the last few gallons to NOT be "usable"?

Of course since I have never run the H2 till it sputtered out of gas, can't tell you if those missing gallons are actually there cooling the pump or not...

Denny....thats an interesting point...being that the mileage gauge thinks the tank is low on 25 gallons consumed when really there are 33 total gallons...does that mean the MPG estimated in the computer is inaccurate?

Do the math:
@ 380 Miles on a 32 gallon tank = 11.875 mpg
@ 380 Miles on a 27 gallon tank = 14.074 mpg

could the numbers be wrong? anyone know more?

I would certainly trust doing the math myself before trusting the computer to tell me.

Umm. I don't think the truck uses the gas gauge to determine MPG. I would assume it gets MPG by measuring the fuel flow or something.
