Broke down and had to be towed ...

Last night on my way home, I am getting off the highway and noticed the tach/rpms were jumping around a bit. Thought for a second, hmmm maybe I should have that checked out. It went away as quickly as it occured - temporarily!

About 100 yards later, the rpms dropped to zero, began bucking a bit and the H2 stalled out on me. A very strange feeling, as I was doing about 50mph, yet had no power. I was able to pull safely off the road and try to start things back up. Was able to get it started but just for a second, as the rpms began jumping up and down and then I stalled out again. Tried one more time - with the same results. The only indicator on my dash which was lit was the battery light. Yet this did not seem accurate as all of the accessories were working fine (windows, radio, lights, etc.)

The good news was that OnStar was also working. They did the remote diagnostic test, that failed to report back anything. Hummer road side assistance was not an option as my local dealer's tech was off the clock!?!?!? OnStar was able to send out a flat bad tow truck to me. Obviously, it was going straight to the dealership.

My first thoughts were that someone dumped something in my gas tank (vandalism), but that does not seem possible as I have just been at my office (where my truck sits right outside my window - alone) and at my house (in the garage) for the past few days.

Anyone have similar problems? Any intelligent notes that I should pass on to my service rep?

No locking cap - I have enough keys already (again I seriously doubt that was the problem - we are lacking tree huggers in South FL).

The tank was filled last Friday and was only a quarter of a tank full at the time.

Dealer just mentioned it may have something to do with the "Mass Air Flow Sensor," we will see.

I read somewhere that the GM 6.0 has a common issue with the throttle bodies & M.A.S., in that they get dirty quickly. I'll try to find where I read it, but I think they recommended cleaning every 15,000 miles or so.

Sure sounds like a fuel problem.

It could be the fuel pump relay in the underhood fuse box. Several of the relays are the same part. The high beam headlight relay was bad on mine from the factory. Made for a tense moment when I switched on the high beams and lost my headlights!

The relays can be swapped to check if they are bad.

The problem sounds very familair to me, never in the Hummer, but happened in other cars, including brand new MB and Jaguars. In the Jaguar's case, it was a Emmision chip recall I never took it in; in other cars, the cause ranges from A to Z. 3 times in brand new Benz S500 going on freeway at 65-75 MPH, they never told me what it was, they did not know and took 3 tries. Could be anything.

Next time you go to the fuel pump don't use the green handle pumps. Those are diesel and diesel doesn't work in H2's. You'll need to use good old 87 for optimum performance (that's what Steve says) http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Jason, Have them check the MASS FLOW AIR SENSOR & MODULE. It also may be just a software glitch that will go away when restarted. It will either be a sensor, a relay, or a faulty plug module or one that got bumped during some modifications.
It is really no big deal. I hope you tried a restrt when you pulled over (A TOTAL COLD START - DISCONNECT TERMINAL OF BATTERY FOR 60 SECONDS) reconnect and restart.

What about an alternator/battery issue? I've heard of this when the tach gets jumpy like you described.

Try www.alldata.com (http://www.alldata.com) You can look up TSBs. I agree that it does sound like a fuel problem. All engines need three things to run. Compression, fuel and spark.

DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. Replaced it and the problem is apparently gone.

i have had a couple of jeeps with bad fuel pumps... usually it give you a couple days notice..pain in the ass with the jeeps..they put the fuel pump in the tank itself... what a hassle. unaslob
