If fording water above where the rocker panel ends and halfway up the door will water leak in? Also as far as the engine goes how water tight is the whole engine, if a snorkle was added would it be possible to submerge the whole engine while the air intake was above? thanks

The rated fording depth is 30 in. At 30 inches or below there is NO chance of damaging any components on your truck. There are a lot of critical electrical components on the top of your engine, which are not water proof. You can go beyond the 30 inch mark, but I would not reccomend submerging the entire hood. The extended snorkels are not marketed to allow you to ford higher depths, but as a way to decrease injesting water into your engine and ruining it. If suck any water down a diesel engine you will most likely be buying a new engine. Your doors should keep most of the water out of you truck provided they are properly adjusted and the weather stripping is still good. The HUMMER H1 as a general rule is supposed to let water in the cab (hence the drain plugs in the floor). A HUMMER is far to heavy to float, the water entering the cab prevents any bouyancy from occuring which allows the truck sink down to the botom so the truck can get traction.

As Carey says...

doors will definitely leak. Depending on length of time in the water the amount will vary. I've done river crossings at a comfortable pace and had little if any water come in, but if you are moving very slow or bog down fully expect water.

The truck can go deeper then 30" but (disclaimer, take no responsibility for actions) as mentioned you run the risk of hydrolocking if you don't have an extended snorkel. Also have exhaust concerns w.o. deep fording kit and electrical. As for the electrical the general rule is to keep the fuse box above the driver side wheel from getting exposed to prolong water exposure and certainly submerged.

Salt water all bets are off and your asking for trouble playing in deep water. Corrosion.

High snorkels are solely for the testosterone factor. The H1's fording depth is 30" regardless of snorkel height. Here does seem to be some "safety factor" for the bow wave that is created by driving through 30" standing water.

Above 30" (or above the hood) you engine will continue to run (probably), but there is a good chance of damage to elec. componenets & water leaking into places it shouldn't be.

PS - If you're driving through any water of any depth, check the geared hubs afterwards - even though oil isn't leaking out, water may have leaked in.
