I would seriously look at getting an aftermarket unit before going with the factory one.

The dealer steered me away from the factory Nav... I went with the Eclipse AVN30D (Which I think most other have around here.) Pioneer and kenwood also make good units. I have heard that Eclipse (by Fujitsu) is generally recongized to be about the best there is.

Try this link

This is the newest Eclipse to be released soon. You can get them with a hard disk drive where you can also store music or DVD driven. You should have them connect it so that you can program it on the fly instead of having to park. (At least I did.)

Just my .02

my other questions.

1. I have the Monsoon system and the aftermarket system works great with it... No mods needed there.

2. OnStar needs an interface for it to work correctly... That and the door chimes. If you have an installer do this for you, they will know about this. If you do it yourself... Just search the archives here. There is a lot of good info from other people's experience!

Good Luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

The Pioneer AVIC-Z1 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_3151_295632461,00.html) just became available. It has many features that the stock unit doesn't... voice recognition, pronunciation of street names, hard-drive based, rips CD's to hard drive, bluetooth hands free phone integration, rear-view camera, DVD playback, and more... all for about the same price as the stock unit with careful shopping (~$2k).

I was just checking out the pioneer syste you suggested in your thread and couldnt figure out if you can watch the dvds on it. I understood that you can have it output the dvd movie to the headrests but it doesnt say if you can watch the movie on the unit itself.
You might not know either, but i thought you might know more about it than i could figure out. thanks

oh and also if anyone ahs already installed this system or haas heard it how is the sound? Is sound quality good? Is it loud, or at least louder than stock, about the same or not as much? Thanks again

Hey Marin,

I don't have first hand knowledge (yet!), but here's a thread (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=52633) that indicates that you can watch movies on the head unit while in park with e-brake on. There are a couple posts that suggest if you "forget" to wire up the e-brake to the unit then you can watch movies while in motion, but you get a warning message every time you start your car.
