A few days ago when I started my '04 truck (22k miles on it), I happened to look in the rear view mirror and saw a small cloud of white smoke apparently coming from the exhaust pipe. It was the first time I had started it in a couple of days and it was early morning but not too cold outside. I've never had that happen before and it has not happened since. Any of you mechanic-types have any idea what the cause might be? Oil pressure is ok and oil level is good too. And, no, I had not eaten beans, boiled eggs and drank beer the night before. ;o)

Hmmm... puff'n... probably not unless there's such a thing as flashback puff'n. It's been quite a while since I've done either legal puff'n or otherwise http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm not the mechanic-type, but that doesn't sound good. Maybe a very small gasket leak of oil or coolant leak into the engine, not enough to cause a noticable drop in fluid levels and slow enough to only show up after sitting a couple days.

I encountered a couple of weird puffs of smoke at some Phish concerts.http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I bet it was water vapor. If the readings are good and it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry about it. Though sometimes white smoke is caused by coolant in the exhaust. Maybe you could remove the head and inspect it if it happens again later- especially the afternoon.

Otherwise, "white smoke" is typical in the morning regardless of temperature because the air is dense with moisture and cannot absorb it as it would after the sun is out. Therefore making the water vapor visible. I think it is blue or black smoke you are supposed to worry about.
