View Full Version : Damn.......blew a speaker already.

Well I've had my hummer for a couple of weeks now, and I blew the sub today while driving to a friends house. I have the Monsoon system. I'm pretty sure its the sub....but then again....ya never know. The dealer will let me know for sure on Monday. When I turn the system on.......I get a loud buzz that resonates all over the vehicle. If I turn the sound up, I can hear the radio/cd player through the regular speakers, but it's terrible.......LOL. I've done some reading on the forums here, and it looks like the system is somewhat fragile, and is prone to blowing subs if the volume is pumped up too much. I sure didn't think I was listening to it that loud, but I've always had aftermarket systems, so my idea of loud is different. Guess I'll have to be careful from now on. It was almost to the max when I was listening to it....but DAMN! I have never in my life been able to blow a factory/stock radio or it's speakers.

Anyone have the same problem recently, and for those of you who have.....did the dealer have to order parts, or was it something they kept in stock. Also....what is a safe level to max out at?

Thanks,

Aphex

LOL!!!!! No they weren't. My last system consisted of 3 JL 10W6's.......so if that gives you a hint.

I wonder how big of a pain it's going to be for them to get to the woofer?

Shouldn't be hard to get to. Just need to pop the rear DS panel.

Can't imagine its covered under warranty though. What did the dealer say?

I talked to the dealer and they said that it would be absolutely covered under warranty.

Maybe I'll score an H2 for a loaner.

You might try turning the bass down if your going to listen at a high volume.

Well it's official. The sub is in ohm heaven now. May it rest in peace. I went out a couple of hours ago to listen to the noise, and when I opened the back the sub made a horrible death rattle and.......poof! After it died......the rest of the speakers sounded just great. When I talked to the dealership today, their reaction was "huh"......that's a first for us. They said they will have a loaner for me at 7am Monday. I'll post back on this topic after it's fixed to confirm the results/outcome.

Never heard a sub go like that myself. Wonder if there is something else that went. Another member here, HoKC, works at your dealership, thus the name HoKC. Anyway, he was talking to Santa Fe Auto Sound about doing the sub boxes for the rear gate. You might want to check and see if they have done any. Couple of 8"s or a 10" back there would probably work better for you in the long run. Let them replace whatever went under warranty though so you can put it in when it's time to get a new Hummer.

Not a bad idea. Just drove past Santa Fe Friday and actally wondered about an aftermarket sub. I'll stop in there after I get of work Monday and talk with them.

Dropped off the Hummer about an hour ago. They put me in a new H2 SUT with 7 miles on it. Sweet Ride! The cockpit is a bit overwhelming, but it's nice. The radio system pales in comparison to the Monsoon. They said they would call when they find the problem.

That's cool, I always get a base H3 from Enterprise when I drop mine off. Keep us posted on what they say.

Those bastards at Hummer of KC never give me a H2. I always get a Thaoe or Trailblazer from Enterprise. I shouldn't really call them bastards since their service department is great. I guess I'll know its you on the street if I can hear you coming form a few blocks away.

Hey Marmedic........they were going to get me a car from Enterprise at first, but when I dropped my H3 off, they said that I would have to wait until 7:30 am for them to open. I told him I needed to get back to work asap, and would one of the guys thre just give me a ride. He said no problem, and then rolled around in a H2 SUT. He actually pulled it from the front lot with the sticker still on it.....LOL.

BTW......the service manager called me about an hour ago. The amp is toast, and it wasn't the sub afterall. They ordered a new amp (and just in case your wondering.....the amp is indeed in the back, next to the sub) and it will be shipped overnight. He said to expect everything to be fixed by tomorrow afternoon, and to keep the H2 SUT. I want my H3 back.....I miss it already, but at least the H2 takes most of the sting out of it. That thing hauls ASS!!!!

Marcmedic.....are there any local clubs here in KC?

Nope. You're the first person from the area I've seen on here.

John, the service manager at Hummer is a great guy.

Figured that was the case based on your description. Glad they got it all figured out and will have you fixed up soon.

PM HoKC here on the forum about clubs. It isn't a Hummer Club but as I recall the guys that run the Off Road Park where they had their Hummer Happening last fall were inviting Hummer owners to join them on outings. Worth a shot to find out. Would love to hit some trails with some Hummers next time I am up there but would most likely have to ride with someone as I usually fly up.

What size of Sub is in the Monsoon system. I was lookin hrough my owners manual and on the web but could not find an answer?

For a factory system there is a decent amount of bass, but I wouldn't mind adding a bit more if possible. Does anyone have pictures of the H3 with the rear panels off to show the sub?

this is not a suprise at all. Monsoon subs blow all the time because of the light weight paper cones. It also matters when listening to a burned cd that might not have as great of quality on a song which causes distortion. If you listen to your music somewhat loud dont be shocked that your subs are getting blown because it happens all the time. Sounds good but quality and craftsmanship lacks on these speakers

I agree that they sound great but lack craftmanship. Monsoon doesn't seem to make it very easy to modify the factory installed system. I had a VW Jetta before the Hummer and it was also Monsoon. Great system, however, not a whole lot of bass as there was no Sub.

The rule of thumb I follow is that I turn the volume up as loud as I want it unless I hear any distortion or any indication that any of the speakers are being over-powered.

Maybe I will invest in an aftermarket sub that I can remove at will to take the stress off of the factory speakers. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

From what I have heard the H3 Monsoon system is better than previous Monsoon systems. I have never had one so only going off what I have heard.

More often than not it is the complete opposite. More speakers are blown from the amp being driven too hard and causing distortion than the amp having too much clean power than the speaker could handle. Clean power being the key part of that statement. Either way it is definitely a great rule of thumb to turn it down if you hear distortion.

There are a number of them on the market if you choose to go that route.

I agree, This system is A LOT better than the system in my old Jetta (2003). The range is the H3 system is incredible. The only thing the jetta had going for it was the fact that is was smaller so it probably didn't need as many watts pushing to deliver quality.

Just wanted to chime in and say again that it wasn't the subwoofer or any other speaker that blew. It was the amp that shot craps. The replacemtn should be at my dealer tomorrow, and I'll have my H3 back. I'm having withdrawl!!!!! The H2 is fun and all......but it's not MINE!

Here are my personal driving impressions of the 06 H2 SUT. I put about 50 miles on it today.

* Everyone stares at this vehicle! I do get stares in my H3, but there is neck breaking going on while driving the H2.

* Adequate power. It can haul butt when you need it. It is a V8 but it actually drives like a V6. A lot of weight to lug around.

* The ride is nice, but much stiffer than the H3. I can whip around in my H3 much better than the H2.

* The cockpit feels and looks like the controls of the space shuttle. Honestly......it's just damn overwhelming. I'm sure that I would get use to it if I were an owner, but I REALLY appreciate the very simple, yet elegant layout of the H3. The H2 does have a lot of extra goodies though.

* Almost everything is impossible to reach without leaning forward. It's a BEAST! The one I'm driving does not have steps to get into the truck, so I had to jump up (literally) to get in. Not fun.....they should come standard with them.

* As I stated in a post before, the stereo is just ok.

* Each and everytime I drive the H2......I cannot stop thinking about offroading. I get it my H3 as well, no doubt about that, but the H2 makes the blood boil in that regard to the extreme. MAN it's bad........LOL

OK......so would I like one. You bet! But I wouldn't give up the H3 for one. They are really apples and oranges. I'd like to have one of each.

I'll let everyone know how the fix goes tomorrow with my amp.

The amp was replaced and all is back to normal. Glad to have my H3 back. I didn't realize just how comfotable it was; all the way around, until I got back into it this afternoon. No explanation as to why the amp shor craps in he first place......just happened. The service dept at Hummmer of Kansas City is fantastic! My hats off to them.

I did swing by Sante Fe, and they said they have done a couple of XM installs/upgrades, but nothing major as of yet.

I'm very satisfied with the stock system, so I'm keeping it for now. Should I have any other future problems......I'll seriously consider a complete aftermarket setup.

Glad to hear you got your H3 back. Good feedback after driving the H2 SUT. Yea the H3 has attracted buyers like me that never recently considered a GM vehicle. I also own a white H3-lux pkg w/some OEM and aftermarket chrome.

Enjoy.
