View Full Version : What Hummer image?
What is the Hummer image? Or rather what do think other drivers on the road think of the Hummer drivers?
Example, when people see a Ferrari, they think “Playboy.” a new S600 or new BMW 7, they think “Fat Cat or Rich.” A messed up old van, I think “Mass Murderer.” beat up old car with headliner falling half way down, the image is “loser.” etc.. So what about Hummer drivers? “*******.” “Arrogant.” “Spoiled brat.” I know Hummer as or PR says succesfull individual, average income etc.. but we know those are PR talks to build the image.
Irrelevant and inconsequential, just for fun. What do you think they think?

From what I've seen, I'd say "arrogant". Too bad it doesnt seem to be true for the most part. Most of the people I've met here and the H2 driver's I've talked with are quite nice. Just very proud of their ride.

I think when I roll out of the H2, people realize I need a vehicle like this just to fit in. I mean, get real... Besides a Tahoe/Escalade or Excursion, there really isn't another SUV that a guy my size feels comfortable sitting in. And to dispel any myths about inadequacies, just make it a point to accidentally make your manhood fall out from your unzippered pants as you exit the vehicle since you know... everyone is watching the guy in the H2. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I have 2 vehicles, thats all I want. For every Hummer owner with 2 vehicles, there got to be one with 10 vehicles. I actually know 1 or 2 people with 10 cars, but they are exceptionally rare. I thought the Hummer PR release of income was much higher, which I did not believe. $75K is reasonable but not easy to feed the family and the Hummer at the same time after Uncle Sam takes his share.
I think I fit both of PhilD's categories, Nice Guy for sure, trying to stay young & trendy before it slips away, well I guess so now that he exposed me. Short I am not. I don't think the Hummer image was a big part of my purchase decision, but I sure found out that super sized image came no charge with the Hummer, I was used to the high profile cars, but they were nothing like the Hummer. It is logical to assume others on the road think PhilD is one or combo of these 3: nice, old or short.
Image could be 50% of most auto sale decision, don't you think so? thats where hundreds of millions of advertising dollars went.

I would say "someone having their mid-life crisis".
One of my sisters-in-law said that at first. What exactly is "mid-life crisis?" how does it work and when does it happen? Is Hummer or big automobile suppose to fix that crisis? does it have to be expensive? Seriously, my friends, I surely heard of it, but how does it related to what you drive?
DennisAJC
11-27-2003, 05:51 AM
It has nothing to do with mid-life crisis.
Mid-life crisis had something to do with young women, hair dye, and painting toe nails!(AAAAHAHAHAHAHA I promise that's the last http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)
I think it has more to do with physical and sexual appearance, "Do I still have it?". There are millions of men suffering from mid-life crisis. I think what they drive is the last thing they care about.
As usual, MaTt is LOst.
Mid life crisis? I am 36 and there are younger ones on this forum. I thought that crisis meant flashy, curvey sports car down at the strip picking up chicks. Oh wait, that was last year. I hope its not my mid life crisis. I'm only 34. The H2 was my dream car when it first came out. I worked hard and found myself in a position to own one this year, the tax break didn't hurt, so I pulled the trigger and here I am. http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/waffen/violent-smiley-090.gif
I have only been an H2 owner for two weeks and boy do my wife and I get a lot of stares from people.http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-023.gif At first we felt uncomfortable but they we realized the were stareing at the H2 and not us.
I believe most people look at a driver of an H2 and say, "wow, it must be cool to drive one of those."
There are those that may think we are compensating for a lack of this or that, but to that my wife and I say,,,http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/aktion/action-smiley-027.gif

I think in England, married men disapear when they have mid-life crisis, just gone for good, off to Spain or Africa or Hongkong; Dr. Livingston I presume? When they had that big commuter train accident in UK, later they found many missing men were not dead, but just took the chance and left. Otherwise, it is said men should have affairs when the crisis hit. Seems buying expensive toys is also part of obligation of men in mid-life crisis. I'll be eagerly awaiting the arrival of this crisis. Instead of fighting it, I now learned we can use it to our advantage. Maybe Hummer can come up with an even bigger Hummer for me to buy? H-0.

Looks like the younger H2 owners have a chip on their shoulders. When I drove high profile sportscars in my '20s, I never thought of anyone looked at me funny. Could it be imaginary? all in your mind? lack of confidence? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I don't see many H2s, but in 14 months, they added up, frankly I almost never see the drivers through the vertical windshield. When I see a H2, my eyes are on the road, I have 1 second to glance at the other driver, 1/2 second to decide if I should wave, and 99% of the time I cannot see the faces. In that 1 second, I may spot it is a man or woman or transngender, but certainly not if the driver is young or old, tall or short, nice or mean.
I'll be leaving in 1 hour to ski in Tahoe, there are LOTS of Hummers up at the ski resorts, seems a lot of Hummer owners are skiers. Let me see if I can spot any young ones who do not deserve to own a H2, any old guys in mid-life crisis, the good, bad and ugly. I got 3 days up there.

I get a lot of mid life crisis questions, mainly from one of my engineers wife who I believe has some major insecurity issues,
I'm 44 and I have always liked expensive hobbies and toys. I don't see this as a midlife crisis, its just what I like. Maybe its insecurity (I do drive a beater minivan that has 200K miles on it and it doesn't bother me in hte least, so much so that I have left my 300ZXTT parked for months on end) so I don't think so. I think its just because I like this damn car and its within the price and class of cars that I can afford.

How the hell can someone determine how old you are while driving by you? Is it all that damn rap music you have blaring out of those big woofers you got in the back? Or maybe it's that license plate of yours that says "UNVME" with your University of Tennesse Class of 1999 sticker on the back...
Just giving you ****.
If you really want to confuse people get a baby seat for the back seat and put one of those stickers on the back window with the name of your fake son with some sport he plays and his number. Then it will look like you have a 7-9 year old and a 1-3 year old...

You could always get some haircoloring and salt-n-pepper your hair, as opposed to those blonde highlights you are sporting right now. Also, taking out both the eyebrow and tongue rings do wonders for the impressions you are leaving the "adults" who are judging you.

I bought my red H2 a little less than 3 weeks ago. I am a 56 yr old gal and a Realtor in north Idaho. My clients have told me that driving this rig says "I am serious about my business and have arrived". That is not why I bought it though..when they first came out I thought they were way "cool". It took me 2 years to afford one, and the tax right off helped too. They are great for driving in harsh conditions in the north woods. The kids at the elementary school that I drive by everyday now run up to the fence to wave as I go by. The kids on the school buses wave as well. When kids that age do that, you know you really have arrived!

quote:
Actually, when you no longer seek confirmation of your success from others (children in particular) you'll know you have arrived

I agree with PhilD. Confirmation of your success from children is meaningless at best. They are too easy to impress. What ten year old kid wouldn't be impressed by a Hummer?
Confirmation of your success is NOT the approval of your peers, it is just the opposite. Keep a check on the way your friends, neighbors and co-workers react towards you. As you earn more money, buy extravagant toys, send your kids to expensive private schools and generally improve your lifestyle you may start to notice people from these groups changing their attitudes towards you. Some will not talk to you as much as before, others will flat out ignore you. People like that either are not happy with their current lifestyle or are so competitive that they have to have more than everyone else. Everytime I buy something I see a some change in someone I know. The Hummer was over the top. I now have neighbors that no longer wave to me, co-workers that won't talk to me and friends that after seeing my Hummer ask "why did you get yellow"? like there is something wrong with it instead of saying congratulations or good luck with it.
So I guess the point I'm trying to make after all this is you know you arrived when you no longer have friends, neighbors or co-workers that will talk to you!
And you know what?...F$$K THEM ALL!!!
I live my life to please myself and my family...no one else. People are so petty.

I questioned myself on that point two years ago when i got my S2000.. It just happens that there was a show on about the very same subject.. I watched it then evaluated myself.
My conclusion. I was not going thru a mid life crisis and trying to relive my childhood..
I decided I never got out of the 1st childhood.. Simply: I can afford all the toys I wanted when I was a kid and when I got married at age 18 , a little over 32 years ago..That I could not afford when raising our two kids..

Born again
11-29-2003, 06:27 PM
I'm 47, a poor kid from the housing projects in central Jersey whose mom slaved for 35 years to raise me and my siblings. I'm a product of West Point and after i saw to it that my mom and family were taken care of, I decided to do something special for myself. I still have young ones, 5 years old and 7 years old, but I also have old ones, 18 and 29. I spent the first half of my life wanting to be older, and now the second half of my life wanting to be younger. My real reason for the H2 is that in 1987, I owned a Lincoln Mark VII and got stuck in a snow storm that dumped 12 inches on us. I couldn't get home to check on my wife and two year old. Ever since then I was determined to one day have a vehicle that would get me where I need to be in nearly any conditions. The H2 is it. And my five year old thinks it is way cool!
One thing good about being "older" is that you have more money than you had when young, and don't let them fool you, money CAN buy happiness. There is no one there to tell you what you can do or cannot do, you tell people what they can do or cannot do. You know who you are, you know your limit, you know you are not Bill Gates and will not be, you are comfortable with your age (whatever it maybe), you see your sons are better and taller than you, you no longer are horny all the time and you don't want to get lucky. You don't give a F what others think of your Hummer. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Have a nice day.

I just don't understand why so many people stare...most of the time I can't tell whether it is envy or hate, judgment or attraction. I am the son of a hummer owner (14), and I still poke fun at my dad for buying it. Someone mentioned before that in many cases people will stop talking to you, but I have also made a couple "friends" since I have had the beast.
I mentioned before "someone having their midlife crisis" because that was what I felt the reason was for my dad, who is 55. I said this because I know that he didn't just buy it because he could, but because either he wanted it or he wanted to make up for something.
I remember when we took it to Myrtle Beach, and cruised down "the strip" with the stereo blasting and the windows rolled half way down, and about half of the people that stared looked like they wanted to punch the tires or something.
I don't care what you drive, if you have your stereo blasting with windows open, I want to slash your tires too. I've seen those people and cars and loud bass sound cruising in neighborhoods they don't belong, when people look at them, they actually think everyone is admiring them. I blast my stereo too, but windows are closed.
Couple days ago I was in the back seat of my Hummer, I noticed something I did not see before, a lot of people looked at and talked about my Hummer, 50% or most of the cars on the freeway. I am usually the driver with my eyeballs on the road so I did not see that before, nothing like a year ago. I didn't see any funny face nor negative gesture, just many people pointing at and obviously talking about my big black beautiful Hummer.
Welcome to another VA citizen. There is alot to like in Roanoke. I believe there is another relatively new member here from your town.
However, what did you expect driving around that way? And in Myrtle Beach to boot. All those seasoned citizens playing golf and enjoying the peace and quiet until some hotdog comes along and ruins the tranquility. Even if you are on the strip, just look at the ages of those folks.
Heck, I am not anywhere near retirement age but I do not want to listen to garbage spewing from someone's stereo.

When I had Hummer new, I had those fake bullet holes on my Hummer for 2 weeks. They are now on the garage frig. when I see them I thought to myself: "How could you?!!! what were you thinking?!" There are times when you drive down the freeway alone, suddenly something very stupid you did years ago pops up in your mind, you are so embarassed but what can you do? History will repeat itself, 10 years later(2013) you will think back at something silly you will do in 2004.
