So if you are using gas that's 87% unleaded, is the other 13% leaded? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The correct unit is octane not %, i.e. 87 octane.

87%

I use 87 myself. That is what the recommend so that is what I use. I have a friend that only puts in 90 because he gets better mileage. I calculated it one day and showed him how yes he might get slightly higher mileage but it is actually costing him more. He still puts in 90 though http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

On a side note, I can't wait for mine to break in. I have filled up twice, first 13.somthing MPG and the second time was 12.8 http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Mine is broken-in at about 5000 miles and still getting 14-15, but a lot of that is also because of the area here.

We got the winter blend fuel, sub zero temps......that all puts a hell of a dent in your mileage as far as I have heard. (On any vehicle)

WEll I just don't think the MPG is going to get much better. It is well below the advertised rate. I use the cheapest gas available.

I get 13-15 city, and the way I drive, and the number of lights I stop at, I can't complain. I got 18.85 on a trip to TN, driving normally at 80 mph. I use only regular.

I've been running Chevron regular since July'05. Lowest mileage 14.2mpg, highest 18mpg.

Usually I get 15mpg. That's running around Silicon Valley, lots of stop and go combined with freeway driving at 75-85mph.

I've been getting 18.5 back and forth to work 37 mile trip 1 way, 25 of it country roads 50-55 mph 4 miles pure stop and go the rest is interstate 70-75 mph. If I take it up to 80 mph I get about 17 mpg. I use 87% and its petro express.

13%unleaded missing from whole, which when add equals 100% octane. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifOriginally posted by Tommy36998:

Use what's recommended. Anything more is a waste.

The enigine is designed to run best at a certain octane level... 87 for the H3. The H3 can run on a higher octane, it just won't get any additional bennifit from it.

The more important thing to consider is the quality of the gas. Some stations sell cheap gas which may have a high water content or other contamenants. See which station/gas company sells rhe best quality 87 octane gas. You may need to run a couple tanks of it to clean out what the others have left behind.

Has anyone looked into the optimum level of ethynol for the H3? Most stations out here put ethynol in the gas for certain seasons. I see that GM is putting out a new motor which can run on over 80% ethynol.

- I agree, but I'm getting free Monthly $300 gas card from work so I may as well use premium gas.

i live in mexico and the fuel quality isnt great. i only use the premium and average +/- 15 per gallon. it is my understanding that the premium fuel reduces pinging and engine wear. although it costs more, i fell better using it.

I use 87 octane and before oil change (3 weeks ago) I was getting about 15 mpg and after oil change I'm averaging over 17 mpg over my normal travel route. I changed to semi-synthetic Castrol oil. I was surprised by the difference in gas mileage because I had adjusted the torsion bars at the time I changed oil.

Anything over 87 octane is a waste of money. I know this from a fuels engineer. Save the money for accessories on your H3!

I use 87 octane and have driven 689 miles and am averaging 17 mpg.

Well just turned over 1K miles last night and when I filled up I was getting 14.85 MPG. Gained about 2 MPG over the last take http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hoping to do fairly well going up to NC next weekend.

95 octane unleaded

were do you get 95 octane?
Usually 93 is highest, sunoco has 94, airport low lead 101, cam 2 racing fuel leaded 110. I like to put 94 in the 442 if draging I use 110

I use Shell regular unleaded and the best mpg I have gotten is about 15.3 with about 4500 miles driven. I do have quite a few hills in the area that I live in, which affects that number a little.

After the first tank of regular unleaded (87), I filled up with super unleaded (93), and I've noticed much better response from the engine. Not huge, but noticeable. Worth the few extra pennies IMHO.

Here in Venezuela the gasolines are 91 and 95 octanes.

And you will not beleive the cost !!!

0.12 U$ / Gallon = 91 octane
0.16 U$ / Gallon = 95 octane

Incredible but true........
