I'm worried

That with all of the union problems at GM, the the quality of our beloved Hummer will take a nose dive with all the layoff's going on and the anamossity going on in the unnion ranks, I worry about the quality going down as pissed off unnion workers loosing their benifits will not care about quality.

That would not be a wise move on the union works part. If quality goes down, sales go down and they lose even more than they have so far.

I personally am not a fan of the unions at all but that is coming from my own experience. I think they have their place and time but I think they have hurt the auto makers as much as they have helped them. I am by no means an expert on the UAW or the auto makers but in another industry my experience was they caused far more companies financial problems than they help. Just my 2 cents and not to take anything away from the good people of the unions.

The UAW negotiating handbook doesn't have many pages dealing with wisdom or foresight.

Yes there are people worried about GM in general around here. And remember that GM is as much to blame as the unions are. GM accepted the union deals and also said that they would be good for the company. Now we see what can happen.
I don't believe that that the quality will change as we have a good workforce. You have people in any industry that can cause problems. The plant has checks and ballances in place to keep quality high. We are proud of what we build, and we plan to continue with world class quality.

I think they should do away with unions. I worked for McDonnell Douglas,(now Boeing) and I swear they had people there that shoulden't even buy a tickit on an airplane, let alone work on one. I repaird alot of screrwed up jobs on MD-11's and MD-80's. I could not beleave the things I saw there and the type of people I saw there. I know if it wern't for the union these people would't work there.

Well, my family is doing it's part to support GM. I got my (black) hummer 4 weeks ago. Since then my brother bought a (black) 2006 1500HD Z71, my mom just got a (black) 2006 Tahoe Sunday, and my dad called earlier this evening - he just test drove a 2006 Z06 and is thinking of getting that (black, I think). I'm hoping they open ANWR soon...

My first GM car ever. I have owned VWs', Hondas, Jeeps, Fords. This purchase was by far the best by customer service in regards to Sales, Maintenace and the extra services like OnStar and product support, Hummer Happenings etc..
I hope that there will be no quality issues, production glitches (i.e. factory recalls) or unjust bad press in the media, in the future that will tarnish the reprutation on the GM product. Kudos to the blue collar worker!

You are correct, I just hope the majority of the work force understands this. We were asked, hypothetically, yesterday at a meeting if we, as salaried employees, would be willing to take a pay cut to not only keep our jobs, but to help the company and prevent others from being laid off in the salaried ranks. It was unanimous, we would take a pay cut.
Our health care will be going up considerably next year, and I have heard no complaining from anyone (I'm sure someone, somewhere is complaining).
As for the union worker. I had four working for me in TN (not on the line, but in an engineering development center), and out of the four, three were fantastic and took great pride in what they did, one was the type that gives the union a bad name. It's not that he didn't do the job right, he just played the company for everything he could get away with without getting fired.
As someone who knows a little about GM vehicles, and has driven almost everything they make, including the new ZO6, STS-V, etc., I would say that the quality of the H3 is right up there with the high end cars that GM produces. No, they don't have all the toys, but they cost considerably less too.
In my opinion, and from my experience driving the H3 now since August, it is the best build GM vehicle I have ever purchased, including the Vettes. And for a first year vehicle, damn, I'm impressed.
My kudos to the engineers who designed it, the bean counters who didn't do any massive cutting, and especially to those down in Shreveport who built it.

I agree 100%. The H3 is one of the best made cars I have every driven. For the price, you can't beat it

As a GMAC Employee, I hear everyday about what is happening with the ongoing "woes" of GM. It is sad and my heart goes out to those who are or are about to be laid off from GM. I grew up in a family of steelworkers and know the stress and financial hardship a layoff can cause. Especially during the holidays.

I know I'm probably preaching to the choir on this board but we need to continue to support our product and workers that are going to continue to make GM a quality vehicle on the road. Quality will not decrease as GM goes through this change. I was the first person in my office to go out and purchase a new vehicle despite the news to show my support to all those hard workers at GM. I'll stand behind this product and drive it with pride knowing I may have helped someone keep thier job.

The H3 is a solid vehicle. It will continue to be a positive seller for the GM brand and will only get better as time goes on. So go out and buy your H3 if you haven't already!

I agree that the H3 is one of GMs best engineered and built cars. As for unions and auto workers, I'm talking from an ex-military and small business owner background and I have to admit there are pros and cons. As an ex-military pilot, I have many friends who went with the airlines and they are now retired and have lost their pensions and health insurance, their only voice was the union, and it is happening in many other companies too, such as Delphi. We are creating a large class of older retired people that have lost their buying power and pensions - I am so thankful to have a military pension.
I have a brother that is an Economics Professor at Washington University and he feels if GM goes into bankruptcy, health costs will increase in the US, the economy will suffer a depression as older pensioners loose their buying power and it's trite but true - as GM goes, so goes the US economy. It's not just GM, and Delphi, it's hundreds of support companies and employees too. I feel bankruptcy has become a tool to dump company pensions and health insurance and bust unions and you and I will end up shoring up the PBGC with increased taxation. This I feel is morally unacceptable. Originally, after owning a small business and dealing with unions, I was anti-union and felt the unions brought a lot of this on themselves, but now, older and wiser, I am starting to see they have some major benefits to the US economy and health and welfare of large groups of workers. In Japan, if a company fails financially or breaks its contract to retirees the CEO and executives go to jail - sometimes for life! MY TWO CENTS WORTH!
