Looking for some suggestions.....I want to get XM radio, but have the base radio. :-( I have no real need for NAV unit....but I do want full integration with the radio for XM, no FM Mod's...if I can find a GM Radio such as the 6 disc unit, can I replace the base model with it? Is that possible? is this a option that can be had after the fact from dealer, or does anyone here have one to sell? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I was able to find a 6-Disc with XM head unit for 400. Local dealer will install. Does anyone have the part number for the XM box as well?

Ok, base radios come with a built in amplifier to supply about 40 watts to the speakers. If the six-disc is designed for a Monsoon system, it only outputs minimal wattage (about 3-10) to supply a signal to the Monsoon amplifier. The amplifier supplies the higher wattage to run the speakers. So be careful what you purchase. (Not sure if a six disc is offered without Monsoon or not.)
You can install yourself, very easy, about 20 minutes if it is the first time. Just pull the trim panel, remove the radio screws, unplug connectors and antenna, then reverse to install new radio. The wiring for all radios are the same at the radio head.
The only thing the dealer will have to do is program the radio to the BCM and the VIN from the vehicle into the radio using a Tech 2. The vehicles VIN is required due to theft protection. The radio looks at the VIN supplied by the BCM, if it is not correct, it will show "LOCK."
The dealer will be able to look up the part number for the XM receiver; it won't be cheap.

h3'er is correct, an aftermarket with Xm might be less expensive.

Terk xm direct for GM, part # XMDGMK is what you want. This kit will do exactly what the oem will do for much less. It comes complete with everything you need to interface it directly with your oem head. I know it is difficult to get the oem harness for the gm tuner as it is not in the car if not equipped from the factory. I actually have a spare oem tuner or 2 if anyone wants them just pay the shipping; you will need to take it to the dealer for a quick TechII fix as well.

I had a monsoon 6cd unit in mine that removed and repalce with an aftermarket system , been very happy with the sound with the monsoon system. As F5Fstop said since you have outboard amps you do not need to ride the volume up very high.

Doing some research today on the part system, and it appears all radios, other than the standard are Monsoon.
In addition, there is no part number in the system for an XM receiver. It is handled by an outside supplier. Dealer could probably get the XM receiver for customer pay, but the dealer would have to call the supplier.
