View Full Version : Some general questions about the H2

How big a of a difference in gas mileage is there between the H2 and H3?
Also how much does it generaly cost to maintain a H2? is the supension expensive to repair?
Basically what do you need to look out for or worry about in a used one with about(2003) 50K?

I'm trying to deciede between a used H2 or new H3 so any input would be appreciated, I leaning toward the H2 but the way gas prices keep creeping up I'm still on the fence.

H2 gets about 5 mpg.
H3 gets about 27 mpg when the squirrels aren't tired.

I think Paragon would be the best one to inform you of repair prices on the H2. He recently had his tires rotated.

3 years of ownership and still grinning. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've taken this think through hell and back in Moab. Tater Salad, Hell's, Escalator, Body Snatcher. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And nothing but oil change and new tires.

There are a few here who've bent their tie-rods, busted quarter panels, spider gears, popped beads and so on....

But that's driver error. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I actually get pretty good gas mileage on my H2. I get about 11.5 mpg with the stop and go driving I've mostly been doing lately. I get as much as 14.5 mpg on the hwy if I keep it under 65 mph. I'f I'm going about 75 mph, I get about 12.5. At 80 mph, it drops down to the 11.5 I get in the city. If I put the cruise control on at 55 mph and don't very my speed at all, I get as much 16.5 to 17.0 mpg.
I seem to get metter mileage than most. I don't know if this is due to the way I drive or possibly the after market exhaust - though I've been told the latter shouldn't make much difference. Clearly though, the H3 gets better mileage.
My only oil change was at Jiffy (had no choice - on an emergency road trip) was about $60 with Mobil 1.
Haven't had mine long enough to experience its reliability, but I think people here are basically happy with the H2 on that front.
Apples to apples new:
H2 is more comfortable, carries more people and gear, and is more powerful.
H3 is cheaper and more fuel efficient.
Both are very capable off road. If you don't want to go off road a fair amount, I wouldn't get either (just my $0.02), and if you do intend to use it off road, I would definitely get the Adventure Package if you get an H3.

There are a lot of people on here that have a lot more experience with both models than i do though.

I agree with marinehawks comments. I get 10.9 mpg. So my range is about 330 miles. It is not noticibly different from my old 95 tahoe as far as being a gas hog. Also, no maint. issues as most of the drivetrain is proven for 5 or more years thanks to being borrowed from the GM truck lines.

If you are used to fullsize trucks, you will love the H2's size and have to get used to the H3 (and vice versa).

I know:

* what my gas mileage is in a variety of circumstances;

* how much my oil change was;

* that an H2 is bigger and more powerful and comfortable than an H3, but less fuel-efficient and more expensive;

* an Adventure Package H3 comes with a lot of helpful stuff for off-roading that would be hard and expensive to add later - e.g, lower tranfer case ratio, rear locker, etc ...

* that a lot of other have more experience with both vehicle.

And that's what I relayed.

What's you point?

I bet an '03 with that mileage could be bought for around the same price as a new H3. The H2 is larger, gets somewhat worse mileage, but performs better offroad and on, and has more luxury.

If you're going to drive on the highway all the time you may not like the H3's anemic engine. GM needs to offer HP options there. It's size is great for around town driving.

If you plan on wheeling with the H2, you can do it stock. With the H3 you need the adventure package, better tires and UCP. BTW, the UCP will kill one inch of clearance.

This comes from wheeling with the 3's. And I do like those trucks. Best bang for the money if you're going to wheel.

So what are you going to do with this truck?

Having driven both, I say its like comparing apples to oranges. Go to a Hummer dealer and do some test drives (even if you're buying the H2 elsewhere). If you're really wanting the H2, you won't be able to get it out of your head. Otherwise, save some money and go with the H3.
