View Full Version : The Spare Is On
Ok, I finally got the spare on. What a PITA.
I put it on last Saturday and went to bolt it down, but the stock lugs weren't long enough to work. I couldn't get the socket deep enough into the rabbit where the lug goes against the wheel. So off it came.
I stopped by the dealership to show them the Alec's Moab disc and mentioned the problem and you know what happened next. Yep, the great guys at Hall HUMMER GAVE me a set of locking lugs for the spare! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So I pop the spare back on last night and go to install the license carrier and....
It doesn't fit! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
The wheel is so wide and deep I had to trim the carrier. Of course that means I got to play with some of my new air tools. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
As you can see from this pic I cut it pretty short behind the license plate. I also had to bend the corners of the plate to make it work. Finally, I added some self stick protector thingys under the plate's fold.
Now I just need to find a different place to mount this thing. I don't like it back there. I just know I'm going to drag it around the trails like an anchor. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Your license plate is drooping on the right side.

You've already spent enough on mods but.....

I thought he could just do it okee style and loosly hang it from bailing wire under the bumper. That way it can just roll up on a tuff departure. Another added benefit, if your running from the law the wind will keep it up and unreadable! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Looks great, Ken.
I've been meaning to mention ...
One thing I really like about the desert sand paint is, in the right light (like in your first picture above), it looks so ... so ... well ... it looks pewter. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

SHAT!
I cannot fit a spare on my truck. The center of the wheel is not large enough. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
So I am going to have to:
1) buy a tire cover! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
2) Put the wheel/tire on the gobi rack I hope to win!
3)run without a spare on the back!

How many do you want to order?
Stomper, I can see fine out the back, but don't get too close. There was a car behind me at a light yesterday... Actually there were TWO. I couldn't see the one closest to the truck. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I'd also make sure you have a correct wheel for your truck. It may not be seated properly on the hubs if it won't fit on the rack.

Greeeeeeat. I will toss one on the truck tomorrow just to be sure. I know for a fact the center of the wheel (where the hole is) is much smaller than that of the stock wheels. I will post my findings tomorrow! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif or http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Nope.
I took off my stock spare (hey - now I can paint it) and tried to put the KMC on there...hell no! I didn't even have to lift it up to check. (thank god)
Soooooooooooooo...I have yet to try one on the truck - but I think they will work. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
