Is there a factory alarm?

On every other GM vehicle when you press lock twice on the remote the alarm comes on. I noticed nothing happens on the H3. Is there an alarm, or is it silent?

You can set it up to either blink the lights or sound the horn, or both. However, its not very straight forward. It talks about it in the manual, which I do not have in front of me right now...

Yes, there is an alarm. If your sitting in your H3 and hit the lock button and then open the door, your horn will sound repeatedly. Even if you open the door with the key, the alarm will sound when armed. Whatever you do, don't loose your remote.

Better to invest in a nice aftermarket one. for 350-550 you can get the remote start with alarm pager. Comes in real handy on cold days and if you in the store and someone screws with your rig it pages you. check em out at local accessories locations the dealer uses. Don't pay the dealer to do it unless you love going to them for everything

My insurance company (State Farm) just removed my anti-theft discount on the H3. I don't understand this as it does have an anti-theft system...just not a great one. Although On-Star is supposed to do a pretty good job of finding your vehicle if stolen.

In any case, when I bought my H3, one of the first questions I had for my dealer was about an aftermarket alarm. He said it already has an alarm and he wouldn't recommend installing an aftermarket one because he has seen too many screw up the electrical/computer systems of the vehicles.

Is this true? I wanted to get one of the alarms with the pager but his comments have me wondering.

That could happen but is a bunch of BS. If you have a quality shop do it you won't have any problems.

Not really a bunch of BS. GM field service engineers, along with service managers and technicians face this problem everyday. Aftermarket alarms are noted to drain batteries, cause no-start conditions, due to improper wiring and/or components.
If an aftermarket alarm is installed correctly with good reliable products, it should be no problem. The problem lies with finding an aftermarket installer who really knows what they are attaching to in the electrical system. That is provided the customer purchases a reliable system, not one of those hunky, cheap systems that look appealing.
You also have to take into consideration that if you install an aftermarket alarm, if it causes a problem, GM will not pay for the work, you will have to pay and chase the installer. If a dealer installs the alarm, at least he can't point fingers and will have to cover the repair.
Also, most insurance companies only offer a discount for a passive system; one that sets itself after a certain period of time. An active system is up to you to set. That could be one reason why the insurance company dropped the discount for the system.

I agree 100%. You get what you pay for and if you go with a cheap unit and a so so shop you are more than likely going to have problems. I have added aftermarket alarms on almost every vehicle I have owned and never had a problem. That is because I go with a top quality system and a top notch experienced installer.

Ok, here is the info on the keyless entry feedback.

1) With the engine off, turn the key to LOCK. Do not remove the key from the ignition.
2) Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote keyless entry transmitter at the same time. Hold both buttons until the DIC display shows the current remote keyless entry feedback mode.
3) To view the next available mote, press and hold the reset stem for approximately two seconds. Release the reset stem and press and hold again to view each mode.
4) Once the desired mode is shown on the DIC display, briefly press the reset stem to set your choice. The DIC display will then clear.

What is the reset stem?

Having not looked at the dash too closely, I would guess that is the button you push to reset say the trip meter. Not sure, just a guess.

I tried it and it works great. Not understanding the codes I just tried each mode and mode 3 gives a single chirp for arming and 2 chirps for disarm. Very cool!

I found a facory Security Enhancement System. It is great. It adds shock/motion sensing without having to replacing the entire system. It is only about $25. Here is the Ebay listing for it:

My insurance company gave me the anti-theft discount..I'd go complain to the manager and get my discount if he didn't give it to me I'd be shopping for a new company...My rate runs about a grand a year for full coverage..which is only $200 a year more than my Honda Element.

I finally Hooked mine up! It works great!
It was easy to install. I installed it behind the passanger kick panel. 4 wires to connect:

Black wire to Black wire on harness = Ground
Red wire to Orange wire on harness = +12V
Green wire to Yellow wire on harness = ACC
Blue wire to Green wire with black stripe on harness = Door Switch
