I just took the H3 in for a check engine light and told them about the cracks in the plastic trim on the roof above front seats. I was told that a recall will be issued in March and a new design is underway.

Are you headed to Paragon next week end? I am planning on it and am trying to see how many western PA h3er's might want to cruise together. I will probably be taking 80 out to 81

So guess just about every H3 is effected or its a design flaw?

I had mine replaced two days ago. No redesign is being done that anyone knows of. they think it happens during assembly and not after purchase. Usually on the drivers side. But some have been on the passenger side. tell them to order a replacement.

Actually mine is at the dealer right now for a wiper problem and the cracked trim. They said that there is a redesign (not sure how) and it won't be available until May. He said it was a combination of the design and that they were tightened down too much from the factory. The stress eventually causes them to crack. He said that he has seen a lot of them.

I just talked to the dealer again about the cracks. If you get the plastic rail replaced now, you will see the same cracks in a couple months. The rails need redesigned but will not be availabe until May.

I'm not sure what or where the Paragon is. Please provide some information. Thanks,

Any ideas on whether there might be any water issues (leaks) with keeping the cracked rails until a fix comes?

I put in another post on this same issue , GM was ready to make a replacement part , the company that was to produce it folded . A new design is coming out as stated .

Currently my dealer says they have a stop fix order on the part until the new one arrives , which will now be around May .

No, I have had a set removed from a H3 we have in the back shop. It has an open channel that runs down the inside, that I considered for a CB antenna. I was advised not a good idea since the channel allows water for flow through, and a cable might prevent water runoff.
The side rails are not sealed to the roof for water intrusion. Water will get in their with or without the cracks.

GM's communication to the dealers in regard to the cracked roof rails.
This message is being issued due to numerous inquiries on the availability of the revised luggage carrier side rails to correct the cracking condition on the front corners. Unfortunately it will be mid May when both the side rails and revised 'A' pillar moldings will be available to correct not only the cracks, but provide a better fit between the two parts. Any side rails replaced with the current stock could crack again, so if a customer agrees, it is best to postpone the repair. I will provide another message with the revised part numbers just as soon as they are available.

Paragon is an Adventure park out near hazelton pa. They have a pretty good web site. They have at least 4 trails of varing difficulty, provide guides. It looks like there will be at least 10 hummers coming that I can count. Most are headed out Thursday and hitting the park on friday and saturday. If you hit 80 to 81 then south about 10 miles. I think Mapquest says it is about 288 miles from butler. THere are people coming from as far away as S.C.. Seems like it will be a good time

Back the subject of cracks in the plastic. I was washing mine, found cracks on both sides and called the dealer and was read the company story line. I am still taking her into the service Dept Monday (at Wrights) to have the stereo adjusted (been crocked in the mount since I got it) and during my trip this week end to harrisburg, just as the snow started to fall and until it ended, my dash reported a SATB failure. Sometimes shutting it off and restarting it did it, more often than not I had to drive until the next stop and shut it off and restart and it was fine. As if by design, as I returned home, crossed the last snow covered mountian the stab started working perfect. No issues since the snow left....

I believe George (H3 Service at Wright) will tell you the same thing he told me today. Wait until May to have the crack plastic rail repaired. It looks like they will also replace the plastic up the sides of the windshield.
