OLD NEWS:
So after my last trip to Moab, I was driving over Vail pass to come home and the SUT bogged down and killed over and over. Push on the gas it was worse. Pulled the battery cables and re-tried and problem solved. Dealer said it was some kind of O2 sensor issues. Also had some fuel canister changed out. No more issue since than and dealer could never duplicate. OnStar did fn\ind issues when diognostic ceck was done.
NEW NEWS:
So I went to run McCalisters Gulch today. So I packed up the wife and dogs and off we went. YIPPEEEE!
Get to the trail head and start to make my way up some steep sections and having a blast. Get up to the Summit (1/3 way into the trail) and have lunch... just before is starts to rain.
http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif So we continue on to see this new trail that we have NEVER been on before. Just geting to the highest elevation and the truck starts sputtering. ****!!! DAMN!!!! F&%$! Truck dies. Re-start and it does this for a couple more times. Than up and over the top of the summitt and start my decent down the other side. HMMMMM. No more sputtering. Odd? Stopped raining too. OK, not too bad, can't turn around even if I wanted to. SO we keep on goiong until it starts raining like a beotch.... and we found out we missed our turn. DAMN IT! So I go to turn the truck around. Keep in mind at this point I'm somewhere between Bumblefu&* and you got a pretty mouth. the SOB dies again and does this about 9 times. So I get turned around and head back and run into this really nice guy running a D90. LOVE thse rigs BTW. He showed us the way out and made sure we made it back to Denver. Thanks dude!
So now my SUT is in the driveway (all washed up already) but scratched to piss. (Kind of looks like Adam's truck now. JK).
Now I have to drive this thing back down to the dealer again. So pissed at this point. OnStar said their are no issues coming up on their diognostics either. So I'm guessing the dealer won't figure this out either.
Thoughts? Other than me going on and on?

Stupid question perhaps, but could you have gotten some bad fuel? Onstar says nothing wrong, thus it would seem it could be a fuel problem of some sort. I had a problem with my computer at high altitudes, but there was a code. Either way, good luck, and I hope it's all that simple.

Call the dealer and see if they still have your old rig, then trade them out of it. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Seriously, sorry to hear you're having the problem, again. The only thing that can make an engine just quite running is either fuel or ignition. Of course we have many sensors onboard that determines that these days. Weren't you at altitude and wet the first time it happened? And, it's strange it didn't store a code. Is it still doing it now? If not, the dealers really going to have a problem determining the problem without a code. Hope they find the problem for you and keep us updated.

So, everything buffed out today.. except three scratches that can be noticed only by me I'm sure.
Jonahs, the only time it has happened was at high altitude. not sure what Vail pass is at, but it's up there and that's also where I went off off roading too. So it has somethting to do with the high altitude. BTW, that's where it did it last time too.
I doubt this has anything to do with bad gas as it's still on the same tank and it has doesn't it since I came off of Vail pass. It only acted up when it was around 11,000ft (just a guess). But at one point I was above timberline and the other I was just below. ???

I had a problem at 4500 ft with a Buick. It would sputter and developed a dead miss, much like a fouled plug. Turned around and limped it back to Phoenix, and to the dealer where they kept it overnight. The dealer replaced the plugs, and one plug wire, and it ran fine, until we headed out again and hit 4500 ft. Then same result. At the end, they realized it was the computer that was the real problem and at that altitude, so they changed it out and all was fine from then on. Maybe?????????

Guys:
I'm going to start a new thread with a title that talks about altitude effects to see what the general experience has been. The current title won't attract members with high altitude problems. That way, I won't necessarily hijack this thread to a direction that isn't helpful to timgo.
Best regards,

Ok, don't crucify me for this... just my take on things -- obviously I am no techno genius!
If it only happens when you are going uphill (I believe that is what I read), and not down, could it be something as simple as the fuel level or a faulty fuel pump?
Just a thought...

A few things come to mind:
Faulty pressure sensor in the fuel pump module.
Faulty fuel cap.
Barometric sensor.
Something to do with the fuel return line being pinched or clogged.
Some things to consider.

Ok, I just went out and plugged in my Hypertech Programmer and it pulled a code P0300. Misfire detected. ??? I'm sure the dealer will have no luck in duplicating this sice we are only at a mile high. And I really don't want them driving this thing way up there. So I guess I'l find out on Monday or Tuesday.
Georege, I'll let you know what happens. Also, There are 5 or 6 of us here in CO that go up to the mountains all the time and have no issues. I had no issues with the 03... except the arirbags going out in the 03. Other than that, I'm not awarer of any altitude issues with any other CO owners.

The P0300 code is engine misfire detected. Since each cylinder has its own ignition coil the only central component would be the PCM module. I'd have them start there by replacing the PCM. At higher altitude the pressure is less and possibly a connection is breaking down.

I had a misfire problem with my #8 and #1 cylinders, they replaced a few things and now its fine. No altitude involved with my problem. I'm not sure what they replaced as I'm about a technologically inclined as a monkey with its hands cut off http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I had a loose spark plug wire after header installation. Intermittent as the wire connected some times and didn't some times.
Misfire detected.

There could be an updated computer calibration to correct high altitude driveability concerns. But if you want my opinion, I think your problem may be a fuel pump. Sometimes they have to be run for a long time before they start to act up, then when they get towed to the shop, they don't act up. Also, the fuel pump is one of only a few things that will act up and not set any codes.

Well, I got it back today. They told me that the full size Chevy vans have the same issue and the FUEL PUMP has been the issue.
So sice they could not duplicate, that's what they went with. They changed out the fuel pump and said it should be fine. I'll find out Friday at let you all know.
If not, it will be strike TWO... provided i make it off the mountain.

I have to step in now, and defend Tower...
He and H2Blondie did meet up and evidently had a great time together -- so much so that they already have a couple of other future trips planned.
However, I believe the implication of "internet dating" should be dispelled... and the off-road lights had nothing to do with the "relationship", and whether or not it would exist -- but rather fate and timing that were to thank.
Tower has been nothing but a gentleman to H2B, and for that I am grateful... it is about time that my sister meet someone who KNOWS how to treat a lady!
Now, for those of you who just can't let this die... better show up in Moab! Then, hopefully you can see with your own eyes that fate works in mysterious ways... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This thread has to rate pretty high on the wierdo scale. Lolo, you can dress it up all you want. It played out right here. Tower relentlessly went after H2cp about a sister until you showed up to barter with yours. He then got others involved in his flirting but got his feelings hurt somehow about something. But the really wierd **** is that after he says something akin to praying to God that he gets to bang the sister when do their first meet (remember Dennis' Scene 6 Act 4) but wants to turn all gentlemanly.
It gives me the willies because this is the second time someone has said that I need to show up in Moab to see this. Tower said it first a while back when I brought up how strange this all sounded and now Lolo is saying the same thing like it some sort of freak show you just have to see to believe. Some of this crap just doesn't sound right.

02- 9 3- 25- 02 Search on Fins and Things The Mom went shopping in Cortez thinking the Dad and kids were going up to Moab to do Fins and Things. He didn't return and she called.
We responded, dividing into 2 groups to 4 wheeler along all the roads north of Sand Flats and south of Negro Bill.
At 4 am, he showed up at North Maverick. He had been on Poison Spider and was later for being lost several times after dark.
Comments: It has been said that one should not vary a flight plan once filed.
Responders: Frank, Sam, Nancy, Bego, Dave, Lee
02- 12 3- 30- 02 The stoopids get lucky at Lion's Back This was one amazing event.
Two teen boys and 2 teen girls start up Lion's Back. Part way up they came face to face with a descending vehicle. They roll backwards a bit and start to tip. One guy gets out. The vehicle rolls back a bit more and..........rolls side over, then woosh.... off the fin, thru the air and big wham into the crack below. Witnessed by hundreds of onlookers.
The call came in as "Jeep off Lion's Back." Gasp. Archie was there shortly, Louis too. The DPS helo circled above with Steve White talking to dispatch. Responders from town roared up the hill. EMTs climbed up the crack expecting to find total carnage. Arches Helicopters was paged.
Curt Brewer stepped in as IC and a helo LZ was established on the road cuz there were jeeps and people packed in all over the landscape.
Fire Chief Corky was first to helo in to assess extrication needs. By then, the EMTs had one girl on a backboard so out she came. Another rescuer and litter were flown in and the second gal was lifted out. Another litter went in and it took some more time to extricate and stabilize the male driver. Out he went. Time for all this was about 1 hour.
And that's the short version of an event that had 10,000 more convolutions, parts and pieces.
Turns out, the major injuries were a broken arm and a bruised pelvis. At first glance, we figured rather a heap.
Comments: Silt hereby bestows some kind of award on the EMTs and Deputies and helpers for outstanding energy and aplomb in a very awKward place.. Two Extra Rations of Grog go to Arches Helicopters pilot John Ruhl. Awesome.
Responders: Maybe 50? To those who participated, THANK YOU.
02- 15 4- 11- 02 Appalling 4 WD roll over on Hell's Revenge Two 4 WD parties, leap frogging each other for the day on Hell's Revenge. At a place called The Fin, the party with 5 4WDs made it down safely. The first of 2 4 WDs in the second party also made it down. Most in the first party were walking around, watching the last vehicle descend.
The 4WD veered off course to the right, dropped off a little overhang and started rolling. The driver was thrown out and rolled down the steep sandstone slope just ahead of the 4WD. His passenger was not ejected. Part way down the slope, the 4WD came to a stop. When the passenger stepped out, the 4WD started rolling again.
It immediately rolled OVER a guy who was coming up to help. The rest of the crowd parted except a 7 year old who got knocked 30 feet thru the air to land on some brush and sand. The 4WD continued down to a stout juniper.
An immediate cell phone to 911 indicating severe injuries to 3 people. An immediate page for ambulance, GCSAR, Arches Helicopters and Care Flight.
Like the speed of light, everyone responded. Arches Helos flew in an EMT. At the same time, GCSAR made a Landing Zone for the helo near the ambulances. The helo flew in 2 loads of EMTs and equipment. Shortly later, Care Flight lands too. Pretty dang fast, huh?
All 3 subjects were flown to St, Mary's. Deputy Neal came out to investigate the crash site.
Comments: In Charles Well's jeeping book, waypoint 18 says this: "You'll pass a vehicle sized depression before starting down a steep ridgeline off the slickrock. Use a spotter. A miscue here could send you tumbling down the slope." (see photo # 9). Miscue indeed.
There is compelling evidence that the driver had been drinking at least "some" beer. At first he wanted to know how his 4WD fared and didn't know yet that it had hurt 2 bystanders. His passenger walked away with scrapes.
The driver was barely hurt after all. The 7 year old bystander suffered a broken leg and a big scare. The bystander gentleman who got rolled over suffered major internal stuff but will recover over a half year. That, somehow, doesn't seem right and is one of the hard things about this job.
The 7 year old had her parents, grandpa and little sister on the trip. The dad who got rolled over had his 16 year old son along. This kid helped where he could the whole time. Awesomely brave. After Care Flight left, he LOST it big. Watching that is one of the hard things about this job.
Responders: Rex, Brad and a bunch more.
Flash Flooding in Canyonlands National Park- Hummer as boat- frightening ride for a family
On Saturday, September 7, at approximately 4:15 pm, the Island-in-the-Sky District of Canyonlands National Park was buffeted by high winds and torrential rains that deposited 3/4" of water in under one hour. There were extensive backcountry road wash-outs accompanied by flash-flooding. The flash flooding was the most significant flooding documented in the history of the Island in the Sky.
At approximately 6pm, a family of four from Provo, Utah, was driving up Taylor Canyon. The four wheel drive road winds in and out of a dry wash. At approximately 6 pm, the family saw a four inch curb of water approaching them down the wash. Within a minute, the water had swelled up to mid-level of the windshield of their 1998 Humvee and shortly thereafter was 10' deep.
At peak flow the wash was estimated to be flowing at approximately 2,000 cubic feet per second which is nearly double the current flow of the Colorado River. The wash was approximately 300' wide at peak flow with a water temperature of approximately 55 degrees.
The vehicle floated downstream for approximately 4 miles over the next 15 minutes at which time the family was able to exit the vehicle, get to shore, and seek shelter in an alcove. During this process, the father stated he had to swim with his 5 month old and 3 year old sons tucked under his arms after exiting from a door while his wife was exiting through a window.
Later in the night their cries for help were overheard by campers nearby, who took them in for the night, and gave them a ride out to the Island in the Sky Visitor Center the following morning.
The vehicle was recovered and is totaled. Vehicle loss is estimated at $60,000.
The 100 mile White Rim backcountry road is currently closed to through traffic. A damage assessment is being conducted on the backcountry road system. Cost estimates for the repair of extensive damage will be completed.
The Shafer Trail may take several months to repair and will remain closed until repairs are done. It is hopeful that repairs at Upheaval Bottom, Taylor Canyon and Lathrop Canyon can be completed within the next week. Ranger Paul Downey was the Incident Commander. [Steve Swanke, RISKY]
Alec: I always show people those pics you took out the window of your car while driving down LB solo! What were you doing with one hand on the wheel? I think the bottom pic is where I finally stopped hyperventilating and quit breathing. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif I did look at the tiltmeter right there and it said "too f$ing steep"! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am doing Lion's Back, so make room in the pewters for whitey, albeit a blacked out whitey. My wife says if I do it she will ride but my 4 yo daughter is saying she wants to stay at the bottom and watch (she loves Seth's video)

Shaggy said I could have gone forward scraping my front a little and gotten out. Others said I might have been able to back out. Many said I was close to a right-hand roll. I don't have enough experience at this to know. All I can say for sure is that it was really good to have you guys around me to keep things safe. Thank you. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Cubs back is funny.
This is where Adam took me to get me ready for the first trip. I had my H2 for about a month I think. I sharted(Drty's word) the first time I went up and over. It's really not baby, but VS LB, it is for sure!!!!!
You start up the front and your looking at nothing but sky. At this point you're not quite sure what's over the other side. Than you crest the peak and HOOOOLLLLYYYYSSSSHHHITTEE! It get a little narrow up top with some off camber stuff. Its really not that bad, but for some reason that seat cushion got stuck up my arss. than you start down the other side. IT'S A FING DROP OFF! Bt you go down slow and you don't slide... that much. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif At that point I almost picked up my cell phone to call for my mommy. But there were no bars. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Seriously though, this is where you should start. If anyone wants to, i'll take the m up that to get an idea and than they can go nuts.. ora spot will do for most. i think DRTY went up it the first time on his own. Even though it's steep, you can stop half way up and start again... same on the down side.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Hey timgco, or to whomever else is interested... I was chatting with the local GM rep here and he mentioned that the 05's were having a huge problem at high altitude or high temperatures (I thought of you http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )and he said that apparantely the issue is indeed with the fuel pump/system and they have a fix for it now. He said that new parts will be available next week...it's been all the talk in his parts division...the only problem is that there is no recall or service bulletin written up for it...as far as he knows. This is probably old news for you, but thought it was good that GM now has an official fix...

NICE! Thanks for the update. Since they replaced my fuel pump I have had it to 14000ft (MT Evans) and had no issues, but I have not had it in the dust and at altitude to put my concerns at ease. I appreciate the update.
