View Full Version : What's your H3 complaint?

Hey, nothing's perfect right? (Ok, don't answer that one.) So, with that in mind, what annoys, bugs, or just irritates you the most about the H3?

Having test driven the car, my biggest complaint is about the turn signal sound. It drives me nuts!! There must be some way to hack into that system and change the sound. I can think of some very creative sounds to use, depending on the systems capabilities http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. Maybe a pig squeal would be appropriate for some of you.... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Anyway, we take delivery tomorrow, and we're headed on a road trip, so I'll be sure to post pics, MPG, and other complaints if they come up.

LOL, yeah, the turn signal sound SUCKS! I kept joking with the salesman that THAT ALONE could be a reason that I would not want to buy it (I was just messing with his head though). I said, how can a HUMMER have such a pansy assed turn signal sound? so ghey! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

HA! Everytime I turn on the turn signal, the Snoop Dogg song "Drop it Like It's Hot" run through my head...think about it.

The horn is kind of wimpy too...Didn't we have a thread about things we would change? I'll see if I can find it.

lack of power
power window control placement
the fact that the metallic dash surround doesnt go up and around the 2 center vents.

I kinda like the turn signal sound. It's the exact sound that my friend's SAAB makes so I'm sure it was in the GM parts bin somewhere.

The truck needs 50 more pounds of torque. Also, visibility through the rear glass is poor. Be careful backing up! The stink bug stance of the H3 makes it worse. I somewhat leveled the truck with 3 turns of the torsion bars but it's still bad.

Only complaint I have is the placement of the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal...too close.

I not only allow smoking in mine, I encourage it. The cupholders are fantastic ashtrays, and when they start to fill up, the console will hold at least one thousand cigarette butts, and if that fills, there is always the glove box, but we have to be careful not to spill the beer. We even have contests to see who can burn the biggest holes in the leather seat. So far Bubba has won that contest with his 1" diameter Cuban Cigar, he smuggled in during his last trip to the Havana Red Light district.
However, Betty Lou did some creative burning and was able to customize by burning "HUMMER" into the passenger headrest; and this was when I was off-roading at 75 mph. Amazing her expertise in doing something so creative during such hard condition like being pounded up and down in the seat. Like it so much, I might have her do the driver's headrest too.
Also found out that if you keep windows closed, and enough people are smoking, and then you open the sunroof, everyone behind you is fogged for about three miles. Great feature when being chased by the revenuers.

Gotta go, time to use the wet/dry vac to vacuum out the console and all the cupholders, they runneth over with butts. Also have to wash out the rear seat, Betty Lou was bouncing up and down on Bubba's lap last night, not sure what they were doing, but it sure made a mess.

Well, back from the trip and have to say, having an H2 as well, I love the H3! It's a blast.

Our interstate milage was about 17-18 MPG @70 MPH and back roads @60MPH was about 20-21MPG. Not too bad for the first 1,000 miles.

Complaints:
-Turn signal isn't so bad, the music hides the noise.
-I agree, power window button placement needs work, and access to seat controls can be difficult at times, even for the heated seat control.
-Lack of armrests like in the H2, and exit and entry lighting from H2.
-And worst of all, try getting a ticket from a toll booth without taking off your seatbelt or opening the door. It's impossible!!! That's why they make EZ Pass http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Otherwise, I can't complain! The dealer screwed us on color, and gave us Ebony instead of Morocco, so I will complain about that.

Also, the left headlight is about 1/6 filled with water, and the plastic molding on the drivers side where the windshield trim meets the roof rail trim is cracked and will have to be replaced. And the seats shake. Like, grab the headrest and give 'em a good shaking. They move more than I anticipated. Anyone else notice that?

- Rear window doesnt roll down http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
- No ash tray
- Bad window switch location
- Bad seat adjustment location
- Cup holder too close to shifter & to eachother
- Rear headrests dont come off
- Cig. lighter socket always on
- 5th door must open fully and knock you over

But there is more good things about the H3 then
there are bad..

I tried to take out the mirror on the ticket machine to get close enough. Still, I had to unbuckle and hang out the window to grab a ticket. It's just the high window sill in relation to the seat. Doesn't help that the ticket thingy is like at Z06 level! Even worse, I had to feed the one a dollar because I was out of change. I had to open the door and get out to do it. Then I forgot the change and had to like reach through the open window while trying to stand on the running board to get it. Ugh! EZ Pass is going to be highly appreciated.

As for ATM's, I've learned to just go inside now, or walk up to the evil things because the H2 doesn't fit though most of the little corridors they build around them. They world needs to think more about Hummers when they build things. Like parking garages and whatnot.

Well, my biggest complaints, in order, are:

Visibility, mainly rear and A-pillar.

Non-flat cargo bay.

No rear seat ventilation.

Rear turn signals are red instead of amber.

Lack of power.

Fake exterior ornaments (hood vent and tire inflation).

No integrated hands-free bluetooth system for cell phones.

No decent on/off road nav system.

Fuel door doesn't lock/unlock with the other doors.
However, I think most of these can be remedied somewhat:

A rear-view mirror LCD with camera looks like a good way to fix the rear visibility. As for the thick A-pillars and large mirrors, I guess I just need to learn to crane my neck more often.

I think the cargo bay can be made flat if necessary by adding some filler (i.e. foam or wood) to the back part.

I guess rear seaters will just have to roll down the window.

Rear tail lights can be replaced with these lights (http://www.autotoyaz.com/h2crclledtaw.html).

A supercharger or turbo should fix the power issue.

Wheels can be switched out, and the vent panel can be switched out (but not sure with what yet, maybe some kind of ram air??).

I'll just use a bluetooth headset for the phone. Maybe it's better that all the passengers aren't involved in the call anyway.

Nav is coming, but not sure how good it will be. If not, the nav on my Treo is pretty good.

Can get a locking fuel cap. Just have to use a key, which is still an annoyance, but a minor one.
And, of course the things I like about the H3 greatly outweigh these!

I'm puzzled why anyone would complain about poor visibility on an H3?

The small windows and the entire design makes the Hummer exactly what it is. A real cool looking vehicle that feels so different from the inside when you ride in one.

If they made the windows bigger, narrowed down the pillars, threw the spare tire underneath the body, well... then you would have a Ford Explorer or some other plain old SUV. Not a Hummer.

I am more than willing to make the visibilty trade-off for the Hummer look.

Because we like our cars and don't want to back into anything that would mar the paint (like another car; pedestrians are worth 1,000 points http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif) I think there should be some kind of back up camera. Otherwise, I don't mind not having rear visibility.

No serious complaints after 2500 miles:

1. After a long trip, I learned I reallydon't like the cruise control downshifting so hard on grades or when you hit "resume". I'd rather it gave a warning and just cut-out than do a violent downshift to 5500RPM in 2nd!

2. I'd rather have a hand lever on the emergency brake...the pedal is useless for active trail use.

3. I'd prefer the clock read-out be in the driver's instrument display than on the radio.

4. Rear seats should fold flat (as advertised!)...rear head restraints should be removable.

5. Found out the hard way that the auto trans is easy to inadvertantly shift out of Park with your knee.

6. Side mirrors should be bigger and provide better view of blind areas below the windows.

7. Needs a sissy handle for the driver.

Power and visibility were all evident when we chose the H3, so they're not complaints.

The rear wiper is next to worthless. It doesn't swipe all the way over.

Window controls are hard to reach... unless you use your opposite hand.

Heated seat switches could be relocated to reach easier.

Wish the rear seats would fold flat.

F5 - Is GM looking at these responses? What are the chances of most of these complaints being corrected in the coming model year? Any chance of a 2006.5 model with these corrections in it?

After 1,100 miles, I have the following complaints:

1. No rear air or auto climate control.
2. Leaf springs instead of coil springs.
2a. IFS.
3. No growl from exhaust (at least they could have made the I-5 sound tough).
4. Steering wheel audio controls-cruise control too.
and the biggie...
5. Not enough trails in my area.

Most complaints are what my wife comments about when she rides with me.

But, I really don't like the leaf spring look from the rear--coils would improve this and give a tiny bit better off road capability.

Most of these complaints seem to be related to options that people feel should have been standard equipment, or in the least options they could have chose to add if they wanted. My wife and I are car people, we have 6 vehicles between the two of us. The day she decided she wanted the H3 we drove 10-12 suvs from large to small, none came with the option of a rear view camera only 2 or 3 of the top end came with the option of a nav system, all had the clock on the radio, all had interior design issues that we did not like (as does the Hummer), but we chose this vehicle because of the capabilities and the apperance. Granted we would like to have some of the things you all mention changed but I don't see how any of you can complain about design issues, when you are the one who bought it. This thread is titled complaints not things you would change if you could.

That being said I do have a complaint.
After spending about 20mins in the mud the other day and using a hose to remove most of it and then taking it to a manuel wash and then an auto wash all the same day, mud had found its way into the door handles. This made them stick open as if the door latch was jammed. Not sure if this is a design issue (possibly door handles need a rubber seal or something) or not but if you advertise a vehicle can do something without damaging it or if this is a maintance item it should be listed somewhere in the manuel. I finally ran water in the door handle from the out side with the handle pulled, hoping not to damage the window motor or door lock actuator, and this solved the problem.

On the seat switches, I have an Expidition and the switches are in the same location and due to the arm rest on its door are actually harder to get at than the H3, I usually hit my finger on the door pocket on the Expedition.

Yes, GM is looking at some of the information on this site and other GM sites. But let's face the facts.
If anyone took the time to perform a test drive, they would have discovered:
Window switches are difficult for some to access.
Roof support pillars are thick. Then again, when this vehicle rolls, to prevent the weight of the heavy frame/powertrain, etc., from smashing in the roof, the pillars have to be beefy.
No rear air
Side windows are small but that is Hummer
No sissy handle
Clock in the radio
E-brake handle is on the floor
Rear lights are all red
The fake exterior ornamentation
Fuel door doesn't lock
Seat switches are hard for some to reach
Spare tire on the back
Rear gate is too heavy
Etc.

All these are noticeable on a test drive. As JV1 stated, if the windows were bigger, with narrower pillars, and the spare tire under the rear, you would have an Explorer.

As for the trans slipping out of park, this is not normal. This is an FMVSS/CVMSS, and if this was a noted problem, there would be a recall. Mine, I verified today, will not pop out of park, when I tried to pull with great force. It is either out of adjustment, or it was not all the way in park. I suggest this problem be fixed.
There will be very minimal changes in '07 vehicles.
I can give a list of complaints on any car I have ever driven. These are things I didn't like, but either still purchased the vehicle, or it was issued to me and I had no choice.
You can go view the Corvette forum, I'm sure there is one or two discussions on items people hate in their C6 Vettes. There were certainly enough in the C5 area of the forum.
The only real complaint I have in regard to the Hummer is the brake pedal, and I knew it when I purchased.
I guess my ideal H3 would have:
Head up display with Nav information,
Steering wheel switches,
Paddle shifting 6-speed auto trans,
Body inflation system
Tire inflation system
LS7 505 hp engine with 475 lbs of torque,
Remote rear opening door
Sunroof from front to back
Voice controlled window, seat and door switches, as well as voice controlled off-road nav and radio,
and let's not forget the passenger ejection seat.
Just don't want to pay 100K for the vehicle.

So I guess your complaint would be that the H3 doesn't come with a built in Radar Detector/Jammerhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I didn't think I had a complaint about the H3 but realize I had a HUGE one.

I don't have mine yet! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

ok, here's a real one I couldn't check during the test drive. I have the auto, and it has ZERO engine braking in 4LO.

Went up in the mountains last weekend in the snow. Dropped it in 4LO and let it crawl down the hill. Even though it was a moderate downhill, the engine braking couldn't keep up with the weight of the vehicle and it accelerated almost all the way to redline. Yes, it finally could hold up the vehicle, but it was revving a lot more than I'd want on anything more than a short downhill.

I've got a Cherokee (5sp) and Suburban (TH400) and both have significantly better compression braking. I'm actually a little concerned that, when I really need it (this was a breakin run), I'll be spending time on the brakes because the engine can't hold up the rig. I had more brake fade than I expected, but I'm assuming that wasn't fade, it was mud and snow on the rotors http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I guess this is the tradeoff of a 5 cylinder? I don't see any problems with power, but less cylinders may equal less braking...

I took mine up and down some pretty steep grades this last weekend. In 4LO and 1 (D, 3, 2, 1) it was too slow going down the hill. It just crawled. I actullay shifted into 2 because it was just too slow down the hill. Evldave, I didn't have any issues with this. Just use the gears and it will do whatever you want it to.

Adventure package, auto trans. Kinda wierd. I'm headed back up to the mountains again this weekend, I'll do some more downhill. Might be that I was on snow/ice, but I've done that in other rigs before and never had anything like this. Engine seems to run just fine, only 800 miles on the rig, so who knows wtf it is. Probably user error http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
