Sweet setup!
How's the nav work?
kodiakz

Awesome!! It also has a built in 20gig drive for music storage so no need for nav dvd. I can also record (in analog) anything on radio, satellite, or aux in (ipod). Backup cam is tied in to system also and can be switched on while driving if needed.

Thanks!! The wheels are 22", but I kept the stockers for a little off road use if need be. This truck is used for our mobile showroom, and might not show as well if I wheel the heck out of it!! Down the road it will see its share of dirt.

How did you support the weight of the Passport? Is dealer install really necessary? If no, what can non-dealers expect to pay for the system?

kodiakz
11-21-2005, 01:36 AM
Rod, that is only the dislpay and it weighs only a few ounces at most, so really easy to install. The install is long, but pretty easy overall. You will need to mount 3 parts on the front bumper and 1 on the rear license plate holder. Then wire everything to a small junction box under the dash and connect the display. Works awesome!!!!! Saves my bacon at least once a week and it does seem to jam laser effectively as I know I was over the limit a few times when I was tagged with the laser. I can sell you a box as long as **cough cough ahem** you have a brand new Hummer right??!!!!! PM me if you need any other details.
Tim, maybe I better not come see you--might be a few more things you can't do without!!

Just curious, but how did you get from the rear tire to the front interior? I know how I did it when installing the framecam on my SUT and can't help but wonder if there's an easier route...
kodiakz
11-21-2005, 01:49 AM
Followed the harness for the license plate light then up and over the frame rails with the oem harness up to the front where there is an access grommit under the driver's side carpet. Not that hard, just took forever. I may have to pull it all back through as I want to do the spare removal kit and not sure I want to cut and splice the wires as they will be constantly exposed to dirt/moisture. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Glad to see I'm not the only one that suffered that route!
I ended up running a 1-inch flex tube from front to rear. Inside is the rear cam s-video cable, power cables for the rear winch connector and a 12v switched line (couldn't find one in the back of the truck).
I have a flew splices in the camera wiring so I hear your concerns about moisture and dirt. The splices were soldered and then sealed in shrink tube with a coat of RTV silicone around the tube edges/ends. At least I think they're sealed. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

dual optimas are you runnin a crazy stereo system? if so was the battery enough or did you mess with the alternator? i think i need to rewind mine or get a bigger one if you have any suggestions.
Please post some pics of the front laser shifters. I can't see them in the pics.
kodiakz
11-21-2005, 03:13 AM
The front shifters are just below the black plastic cover with the holes in it. They are mounted to the top of the bumper and I needed to trim the swiss cheese plastic to clear them; will post a pic in next few days.
Definitely going to be driving some power hungry Zapco amps (about 4500 watts), but the oem alt is pretty sturdy @ 145 amps. I also work out of the truck quite a bit and something is always running or charging so don't want dead battery.

ZAPCO now your bringim back my youth! i hear they still make great amps . im personaly gonna go with JL but hey what do i know. so your gonna keep the stock alt? im only gonna run 1500 watts to 4 10" W6s and some focals in the front. but the install guy sayes we might need a new alt. im gonna try that big stinger battery first it about the size of 2 batterys.

JL is know for there subs! not amps.

hey txsut nice cornerfinding!!
kodiakz
11-22-2005, 02:21 AM
Humm, if it is Delphi, is it 145 amp. You could likely take that to a local shop that builds alts for limos/abmulances and have them gnarl it up to say 200 amps or 230. Make sure they do diodes, stator, regulator, etc all heavy duty. It will probably run you about $150 but it will be bulletproof and you know it will fit just fine http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Nice battery setup!
Did you have to do anything special to mount them like that?
kodiakz
11-22-2005, 12:25 PM
I just took out the stock tray, removed the side studs from one of the yellow tops, and dropped them in. I fabbed a quick bracket to hold them until I can have my welder make a fixed one.
kodiakz
11-23-2005, 12:13 AM
We sell the red and yellow tops from Optima. I believe the yellows are around $100 ea. Tough for even three of them to keep up with the current your system can draw--you should have a capacitor bank of some sort and a beefy alt to handle the demands.
rocketw19
11-23-2005, 01:10 AM
ya i just got my truck back from the stereo shop i forgot to ask the cold crankin amps on the battery but it is huge like 2 regular bats. i also have a 5 farad(sp) capacitor. and my battery meter just moves back and forth when the base hits for a long time. i am only runnin 1450watts of JL. if you try to power thoes subs with a stock alt. im sure it wont last long.
kodiakz
11-23-2005, 02:09 AM
I think 145 amp is largest Delphi makes. Aftermarket parts can build that alt up to 200 or even 300 amps reliably. If your volt guage drops a bit or the lights dim when you are listening to system, you should upgrade it or the batteries or both (I think you mentioned that you had aux batteries--if so then get yourself a multi-farad cap like Fosgate or Phoenix gold makes).
rocketw19
11-23-2005, 04:34 AM
thoes amps used to be real good but i couldnt tell you if they still are. im not into it that much anymore. but i can tell you your gonna need more power to push thoes 12s im gonna guess at 300watts per 12 min. but probably best at 400watts.

Nice Ride! What kind of HID lights do you have?
kodiakz
11-23-2005, 12:41 PM
The regular headlight hids are here: http://www.xenondepot.com/product.php?product_id=37e:
The drls are converted over to hid using a standard foglight and a 9006 bulb.
Humm This, Phoenix gold amps are definitely not what they used to be. I would be looking at JL, Kicker, PPI, Fosgate, and if you want to go all the way, look at the Zapco 9.0C. That is bar far the most powerful amp I have ever dealt with!!! One of those amps can easily put out over 4000 watts, but you must upgrade your alt as they draw intense current!! I would say two or three of those for 12 subs and they will here you in the next state!
kodiakz
11-23-2005, 11:25 PM
Man, you drive a rig like that with that badass enclosure and now you're on a budget!!! lol You could use 2 of the Zapco amps (yes, they cost over $1k ea, but NOTHING else will come close to the power and damping ability of the 9.0 period). They are also insanely low as to the load they can handle; we have run them down to 1/2 ohm no problem and no overheating. PPI is precision power (now owned by DEI) and their newest amps have taken on a lot of the abilities of their old school offerings. If you do connect 4 subs to one amp, just be mindful of the load (ohms) and the ratings of the amp you choose.
Hey Alec, would that qualify as a 'fissed'? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
kodiakz
11-24-2005, 01:44 AM
I would say the best bang for the amp buck would be the Kicker 1200.1--2 of those would also provide ton of power for your woofage.
kodiakz
11-24-2005, 04:44 AM
That amp is actually pretty beastly. you could step up to the KX2500.1 and double the power. The Fosgates are not bad, but do not put out the current that the Kickers do.
kodiakz
11-25-2005, 01:19 AM
Honestly, it's just middle of the road.
Here, I found a SWEET one just for you!!!! About 20 of these and you will be good to go (and they are only 99.99 ea) lmfao http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
rocketw19
11-27-2005, 03:21 AM
fosgate used to be one of the best then they went comercial and started makin them over seas but i hear they are on a comeback. PPI are good amps for the price! pretty much bro your gonna have to suck it up and do it right, cuzz after all the rest of the system is crazy. no half steppin now!
kodiakz
11-27-2005, 02:42 PM
Maybe--but no one cheap amp will do what you want or sound worth a poop!! It is going to take a good deal of current to drive eight 12" sbus.
