no warranty coverage up in canada if you have Miles in odometer

I just found out that gmcanada won't cover anything under warranty until I change my odometer from miles to km (cost 600-800 bucks to do, 2-5 days to get done)I live in Ontario and the only 2 hummer dealers here have both told me the same. This sucks!!! Anybody know a way around this? I wanted to bring it in coz the plastic parts above the windshield that connect to roofrails have cracked and now flap like crazy when driving highway speeds, very annoying.

Im suprised it wasnt changed before you bought it.Maybe drive it to us and go to dealer there.I had same problem with plastic but no flapping in wind just cracked they ordered it last week it hasnt come in yet.

Where in Ontario do you live, because there are 4 dealers that I know of.

Looks like were neighbors, I'm in Brampton.

This suprises me as I thought that the GM warranty was North America wide, not just country of purchase. I better look into this as I am planning a few trips to the US next year.

I spoke with gm customer service and they've told me that I can get recall work done (rear windshield washer pump) but anything else that's not a recall won't be covered. My situation is I bought the vehicule through the used car department of my mitsubishi dealer, he was buying them from the states but not converting the odometer from miles to km. The gm customer service rep told me that I may have to wait 6 months or go through 12000 km (or is it miles)before the warranty would finally be useful but that again may not be certain.

I thought that the importer of a US vechical HAD to have it converted to KM to have it registered in Canada. Also had to have the french stickers insatlled(not 100% on this one).

You have what GM calls a "gray market" vehicle and possibly a shady used car dealer.

I work at a GMC dealership and if a Canadian vehicle comes in we can not repair it under warranty until it is registered in the US and converted to miles.

With that being said, if it is an emergency repair (like a Canadian tourist just visiting and breaks down) we will repair the vehicle, convert the KM to Miles and submit the warranty.

You should check with your DMV and see what the exact regulations are regarding the import of
US vehicles. If the dealer is not in compliance you need to take it back to the dealer where you bought it and tell them to either comply with regulations or buy it back.

Here is the policy right out of the GM manual- this is for Canadian vehicles in the US so it should be reversed for US vehicles in Canada.

1.4.8 WARRANTY IN THE U.S. ON VEHICLES SOLD IN OTHER COUNTRIES, U.S.
MILITARY/GOVERNMENT PERSONNEL AND TOURING OWNERS
a. Warranty Coverage Canadian Owners
The warranty issued by GM of Canada to purchasers in Canada applies to GM
vehicles registered and normally operated in Canada.
Effective September 1, 2002 all vehicles originally sold in Canada with an “in-service
date” on or after September 1, 2002, must be registered in Canada and retained for
use in Canada for at least six months and have at least 12,000 kilometers (7500
miles), before a GM dealer in the U.S. is authorized to perform any warranty work
except as provided in the additional information to follow. Vehicles must also have the
odometer converted by a GM authorized Electronic Service Center.
Any warranty claims submitted by dealers for a vehicle originally sold in Canada
that has less than 6 months from the in-service date, has less than 12,000 kilometers
(7500 miles), and has not had an odometer conversion by an authorized service
center, will reject. (List of centers at the end of this section)
Exceptions to the above restrictions on performing warranty work are Canadian
owners touring in the U.S. or Canadian citizens relocating their residence to the U.S.
Dealer is to verify eligibility by checking GMVIS to determine the status of
serviceability. If the owner is a Canadian tourist, the Dealer must verify the
General Motors Service Policies and Procedures

customer’s Canadian residency (i.e. Canadian driver’s license or Canadian vehicle
registration) and keep a copy of it in the Dealer’s files. Claims that fall under this
category should be “H” routed to the Area Service Manager for payment and
submitted in kilometers, and not miles.
GM Dealers in the U.S. are still authorized to perform any work required for the
completion of a recall, regardless of the mileage or in-service date.
GM Dealers in the U.S. are authorized to perform warranty work on vehicles
originally sold in Canada if the vehicle has been in service for over 6 months and has
GM Receiving and Inspection Manual.

Or tell them you will take it to the DMV and they WILL have to comply or lose their licence.
