Has anyone else experienced a smell of hot gear oil when off roading for a while? Also does any get a whine when in Low range transfer and gears above 2nd in trans? Would be interested to know. Thanks

Smell - haven't noticed anything.
Noise - yup, normal. There was a thread about it a couple weeks ago.

Got the smell as well. I noticed it the most when climbing over a long period of time. My first thought is just some overfill...or at least I shall tell myself this.

Could it be the breather on the trans/transfer case or rears??

My guess was the vents too. I was cruising with all the windows closed to keep the dust out and I still smelled it. Glad to know I am not the only one. I will have to keep an eye on it. Or should I say nose?

Time to go to a synthetic if it's not in there. And people want to put half again more horsepower to these components?

Axles already use SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant. Tcase uses Dexron III, synthetic might be ok, but the auto uses the new Dexron IV, and it is a lot better than Dexron III.
Can't say if synthetic would be better in the case or not.
Just remember if changing the fluid in the Tcase to make sure it is above the fill hole.
You fill to the fill hole, replace the plug, then remove the speed sensor and add another specified amount. Should be a supplement in your owner's manual, in regard to the Tcase fluid fill procedure.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but could your t-case be over heating? Are you leaving it in 4 lo for an extended period of time??? Like say longer than 30 minutes?
Just curious.
