Petty: Racing not a sport for women

May 26, 2006

A woman's place is -- well, Richard Petty didn't go so far as to say it's not behind the wheel, but he doesn't think it's first over the finish line, either.

"I just don't think it's a sport for women," Petty, 68, told the Associated Press. "And so far, it's proved out. It's really not. It's good for them to come in. It gives us a lot of publicity, it gives them publicity.

"But as far as being a real true racer, making a living out of it, it's kind of tough."

This isn't new. In her recent book, "Janet Guthrie: A Life at Full Throttle," the first woman to drive in the Coca-Cola 600 recalled the reception she got in 1976 (then the World 600).

"When I shook hands with Richard Petty I thought I'd get frostbite," Guthrie wrote. "Later, he would be quoted as saying of me: 'She's no lady. If she was she'd be at home. There's a lot of differences in being a lady and being a woman.' "

Petty has come to appreciate her efforts, and even though NASCAR would dearly love a Danica Patrick of his own, he's sticking to his guns.

"His position is not going to change because that is who he is, that is part of who he is," said his son, Kyle Petty. "That's how he was raised, when he was raised, the era he was raised in."

Racing not a sport for women? Why not? How about racing isn't a sport at all. I mean give me a break how hard is it to drive around in circles. Yes I've done ride-a-longs at the Las Vegas Motor speedway. Not impressed. I'm happy that people are having fun doing something they seam to like doing and I suppose it's making some very rich, but a sport..Not in my opinion. If it were not for the crashes and the possibility of death most Nascar fans would never show up. What's that saying about our society.

ok let the flaming begin:D

I've been a racing fan for more than 40 years (Formula 1 and Indy cars) and I think what offends some about Ms. Patrick is that she is being used to pander. She is a good driver. She has never won a race. There are very much better drivers (male and female) who get no attention at all, and therefore, earn much less money than she. There are better female drivers who aren't as attractive and are ignored.

Thus far, Ms. Patrick is just a marketing event. The photo sitting on the rear bumper of the '57 Chevy confirms that. If she ever wins a race, she may become something else.

I apologize if I have offended some, but that's how I see it.

Congratulations to Roger Penske whose very clever fueling of his driver's car during a pit lane penalty (something that isn't allowed in Formula 1) enabled Sam Hornish to win the race.

How about off-roading isn't a sport at all. I mean give me a break how hard is it to drive around MOAB. Yes I've done ride-a-longs all the time when I go to Moab. Not impressed that's why I park mine at the Gonzo. I'm happy that people are having fun doing something they seam to like doing , but a sport..Not in my opinion. If it were not for the broken tie-rods and the possibility of death most Hummer members would never show up. What's that saying about our society. That's why I'm in the porn editing biz aight?

First off, for those of you too ignorant to know the difference, NASCAR is not a wax and it is not lawn mower racing. It does involve hillbillies, tho.

Danica is an open wheel race car driver. She currently drives Indy and drove CART a couple of years ago. The CART series makes it's way here every year for the Centrix Financial (Shaggy's company) Gran Prix of Denver. A very cool event, indeed. They close off the downtown streets and TEAR THEM UP! One year, we had paddock passes and she let us check out her trailer and sit in the car and stuff. A very cool, composed and collected young lady. I think she's only 26 now and has finished (many do not) the Indy 500 in 4th and 8th place in the last 2 years.

So, as I said earlier...Go Danica!

I am pretty sure Danica did those pics before getting major sponsors- which in turn led her to get the major sponsorships. I don't like it and she prolly didn't either. I had to go a similar route to get bigger sponsors in local surfing- nothing whorey- just looking cute- good for marketing on both aspects- it is sad but it works. Same with men and women in various fields.

Para- it would have been pretty sweet a few seconds earlier (have to look at the difference- twas pretty close) But.....I could care either way and 2nd and 3rd ain't ("ain't" is common in Nascar ;)) too shabby.:D

Sexy sells, sad but true and I like sexy... Danica is helping open wheeled racing by bringing awareness to young girls and women that they could too if they wanted.
I compare her passion to - and don't freak - Jeff Gordon. Yes, Jeff is a wining mother #&^%er, but he's wasn't a southern good-ole-boy and he was very young. He upset the NASCAR world by wining and changed things forever in that world. Danica is doing her best to enter a mens only club and once she gets a few wins under her belt I think more women will enter that co-ed club too. Remember Shirley Muldowney and how about up coming Melanie Troxel -Top Fuel.
Isn't it also obvious, (where weight is everthing), that a 105 lb women that can push her car and crew to it's limits would do better that a 175 - 200 lb guy in the same car. All cars are the same weight - correct?
I'd like to see a all black female crew with Tyra Banks as the driver in F1! Or better yet how about Ziyi Zhang from Crouching Tiger? but that's just me... Anything to upset the balance of a male dominated racing world. Sexy sells - period!

And yes sex sells. If INDY/NASCAR had bikini clad women drivers or better yet pit crews it'd make for more enjoyable viewing:D

She's an amazing BITCH in person. Her husband hangs all over her while they walk to and from her car as if he's marking his territory. She doesn't sign autographs anymore. Watched her spend a whole weekend walking past little kids and ignoring them. They didn't even want an autograph, just a wave. She's worse than Tony Stewart on a bad day. Last year the lady with the HUGE cans from South America was about the most friendly driver I've ever seen. She made Patrick look like crap...well, that and Danica's driving.

Wow. That is quite a change. When she was a nobody racing Champ Car in Denver we bumped into her in the paddock and she was very sweet. And single. She showed us her trailer and even let us sit in her car and help get it staged for weight and meaurement. Weird. Fame and money screws with people.

She never raced in Champ Car - she was in there feeder system, Toyota Atlantic, where she did ok, but really didn't have much competition.

The first time she raced here she seemed great, and was friendly with fans. Ever since then...royal bitch. I guess that's what happens when you realize you'll never win a race.
