16,000.
One of the largest state trade associations of its kind, this 1,000-member organization represents petroleum marketers and convenience store owners and operators who own, operate, or supply approximately 16,000 convenience stores, service stations, and other retail motor fuel outlets in Texas and the southwest United States. Collectively, these petroleum marketers and convenience store companies supply nearly 9,000,000,000 gallons of fuel and tons of related products annually to Texas motorists. The average TPCA member owns and operates ten convenience stores and supplies twelve more. These businesses provide fuel and lubricants to the vast majority of commercial end-users, including farmers, construction firms, and local and state governments. In addition, TPCA associate members represent all of the diverse fields associated with the petroleum distribution system and convenience store industry.

If you read the quote it says 16K to include other SW states.
The latest data is for 2002 but it is not broken down by state, so here is my thoughts:
In 1997 there were:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE> 81,684 convenience store service stations and,
45,205 regular gas stations that have no c-stores
TOTAL = 126,889, in all of the US
In Texas, 8,049 with c-stores and,
2,851 without
TOTAL = 10,900
That was in 1997. The total in 2002 was:
<UL TYPE=SQUARE>92,979 convenience store service stations and,
27,823 regular gas stations that have no c-stores
TOTAL = 120,902, in all of the US
It would be my guess that the Texas 1997 numbers would be close to accurate since there is only roughly a 5% change in the total US numbers.
So, I am guessing there is somewhere between 10,750 and 11,000 based on NAICS codes 447110 and 44719. Hope that helps.
