View Full Version : HIHUMMER = HUMMERLESS after Paragon/RauchCreek

Okay...let the story of my drama H3 continue....
Started driving home Tuesday from Paragon. Got the speed up to around 60mpg and there was a gawd awful noise and vibration. Called my local dealer who informed me to contact Onstar to find the nearest Hummer dealership....which ended up being in Allentown PA...an hour east of where I was. So....head to Scott Hummer in Allentown. They pull my truck in thinking perhaps the problem was a U-Joint or a Wheel Bearing.
First thing they do is rotate and balance my tires..."just to rule out".
Of course...that didn't fix the problem. So about 4hours later they tell me....are you ready for this....MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL "was shot". (keep in mind I just had the front replaced 3 weeks ago and from that, I now have a front axle seal leak that was to be corrected).
The Service Manager at Scott Hummer tells me that they have replace about 4 early build date H3's rear diff. GM has told them that "they have found a containment/chemical of some kind in the differential housing that cause the breakdown of the internal parts. No point in replacing the internal parts, b/c the breakdown will happen again. So instead we have to replace the whole differential...meaning completely everything except the wheels. This will take about 7days". (just glad it didn't have anything to do with my "sassy wheeling skills". ;) )
Thanks so much to HiMobility and his family for opening up their home and allowing a "slummer" to stay there. :p :D
So....left my poor H3 in Allentown, PA...with hopes that it will be shipped to my local dealer in about 1 week. I've contact Hummer and my "case" has been escalated beyond customer service to a "case manager". Time to play hard ball.
I just got home tonight around 6ish. 10hour drive is never too much fun.
BEWARE those with the early build dates.....your break down of the rear diff. maybe be happening soon.:(

AAM produced some axles, prior to Aug. '05 that had lapping compound left on the gearset. Usually, within 3-5K miles, the axle would be too loud to be drowned out by a Monsoon system. :D Some happened with earlier mileage, some after 5K; depending on the amount of lapping compound.
As the gearset wears, it can cause some vibration problems.
AAM foots the bill for this repair, which is a quick swap of the axle. Easy diagnosis, pull the cover and see if there is sandy substance floating in the lube.
I would have thought most are replaced, but evidently there are a few out there that are still with low mileage or with small amounts of compound.

You're saying you were able to go 21K with the lapping compound problem?
Oh, and the reason they are replacing the entire diff is that is the only way it is serviced at this time, AAM/GM does not service the gearset. But I'm confused as to why they would also service the drive axles.

I talked w/ my service manager at my local dealer and he said that there are several new bullentins out on the H3...from things like the water leaking in from the sunroof to battery drain to the transfer case.....
Hummer had told me that they are looking into if this would be a severe enough case to give me another H3. Got to get the appropriate hands in the pot first.
Oh yea...their little 24hour response time isn't completely accurate either.

There are no bulletins for sunroof leaks, there is a new bulletin just issued in regard to the rattle, and that is a quick easy fix. I can find some service manual update bulletins, but that does not mean there is a problem, that means the original procedure was incorrect, and the techs were having problems repairing items.
There is some preliminary information posted on the T/case, as well as the very early fill procedure check.
Only thing I see about batteries is the covers are now released for service, and to make sure you confirm the battery is dead before replacement under warranty.
Theses are all checks done on the GM-Dealerworld site, that is updated DAILY by GM with all bulletins, preliminary info notices and service procedures. So, I'm not too sure where your service manager is obtaining his information.
Sorry to hear about all the trouble you have had with your H3, and I'm just pointing out the reason they are installing your entire new diff, and would question why they have to install shafts, unless the splines were destroyed, and if they were, then the shafts do need replacement.
Hopefully Hummer will work something out with you.
Good luck....

They do, but not updated as quickly. GM's electronic service information is updated with daily feeds, and these same feeds are sent to places like NHTSA, but NHTSA does not update the information as fast. I'm going to guess, they are 2-4 weeks behind. GM's eSI is the tech area of GM-Dealerworld.
I believe also Reynolds and Reynolds and Honeywell offer the same info, under license from GM; however, again, they are not as up to date.
Plus, I see all bulletins on these vehicles, prior to being released to the eSI system.:D

Sorry HI, but the front diff was not replaced, just the seal. In addition, you didn't have the lapping compound problem, or the dealer did the repair incorrectly. With lapping compound, the entire diff housing needs to be replaced, not just the ring/pinion gear.
This is your complete service history, and I don't know of any dealer that would not submit a claim for a front diff replacement.
I do have to say, you had some problems with the radio, can I ask what the problems were?
Also, have to ask about the front crossmember.:D They covered that under warranty? That sounds like that Hummer dealer did you a good turn. Usually body parts like that are not replaced under warranty since not much can happen to them from a warranty standpoint.
Here's the information on the rear axle lapping compound problem, and it states to replace the entire rear diff due to the contamination. "Remove the axle cover pan and inspect for black discolored fluid. The fluid may show sand particles. Closely inspect the inner diameter of the ring gear for clumps of a black sandy residue. This residue is lapping compound that was not sufficiently cleaned from the axle during the manufacturing process. If these conditions are found, the complete axle assembly should be replaced, because all moving parts of the axle will be affected by the lapping compound residue.
Important Note: The lapping compound issue will not be present on vehicles built after August 10, 2005. Rear axle noise conditions on vehicles built after this date should be diagnosed and repaired as needed using procedures found in SI.
Use part number below or any number that these supersede to. The Broadcast Code, HL1 or HL2 for example, can be found in VIS under Vehicle Component.

If the rear diff is being replaced right now, there will be no claim for the replacement, until the job is finished. At which time they will claim the same labor operation number F2383.
If, and I say if because I'm not in the dealer, you had the lapping compound issue and didn't realize it until 19K miles, and the dealer only replaced the ring/pinion set, that could be why your rear diff failed again. If the first rear diff was a complete assembly replaced, the dealer would have claimed F3200 Rear Differential Assembly (Complete) - Replace.
It almost sounds like this is the problem. Maybe with all those new radios you couldn't hear the rear axle whining.:D (Only kidding...)
The only other thing would be if it wasn't the lapping compound problem, the first tech may not have set up the ring/pinion gear correctly, and they failed a few thousand miles later.
To be completely honest to you and everyone else, we DO NOT have a problem with rear diffs; other than the lapping compound issue. The rear diff is strong enough so that if something breaks it is usually the axle shaft (weakest point in the link), versus the front diff. :(

Yes, the dealer could have pulled the incorrect number for the repair, correct labor op would be F2382 versus F2383. Easy to fat finger one digit. In addition, since all repair times for H3 at time of repair were straight (vehicle not time studied till a month ago by GM to set exact times), to the warranty people, it would pay whatever it took to repair (tech punches in/punches out). Only thing that would be affected would be warranty reports run to see what parts are failing at what rate.
To be honest everyone, I can't believe anyone would have the correct names, the suggested diagnosis without this being for real.
It appears from my end, that it was a front diff gear replacement, and it was a mistake in the system by the warranty person at the dealer.
However, please explain how you damaged your front crossmember?:D

ANGER TOOLKIT
http://www.angermgmt.com/img/spacer.gif
Four Proven Techniques for Managing Angerhttp://www.angermgmt.com/img/1.gif
The first step towards managing anger in our personal relationships appropriately is the identification of the mistaken attitudes and convictions that predispose us to being excessively angry in the first place!
Once these mistakes have been corrected, we will be less likely to fly off the handle than we were in the past.
http://www.angermgmt.com/img/2.gif
The second step is the identification of those factors from our childhood that prevents us from expressing our anger as appropriately as we otherwise might. These factors include fear, denial, ignorance and so on.
These impediments to the effective and appropriate management of our anger towards others can be removed so that our suppressed anger will NOT compound itself inside of us as it has been doing for years.http://www.angermgmt.com/img/3.gif
The third step is learning the appropriate modes of expressing our "legitimate" anger at others so that we can begin to cope more effectively with anger provoking situations as they arise in our personal relationships. When we are anxious or depressed in our relationships, we are often experiencing the consequences of our suppressed anger. The problem is that we have suppressed our anger so deeply that we succeeded in concealing it from our own selves! All we are left with is the residual evidence of it, our anxiety or our depression. When we are depressed, very often we are also angry at our self without realizing it.
Learning to appropriately manage our anger at ourselves is the antidote to much of alcoholism and drug abuse. But the management of our anger does not end in learning these new and more appropriate ways to express it. There remains one last step.http://www.angermgmt.com/img/4.gif
The fourth step in the Anger Management process is to bind up the wounds that may have been left by the potentially devastating emotional impact of anger. "Anger wounds" left in us against those who have wronged us. If we do not complete this mopping up step, we will cling to the resentment of having been done wrong and will carry the festering residue of our anger and rage in our hearts forever.
One of the most effective means of giving ourselves immediate relief from anger in our personal relationships is to forgive others. Many of us cannot forgive those who have trespassed against us.
Something below the level of our conscious awareness prevents us from relieving our residual anger by forgiving the other person and we then carry a grudge in our hearts for thirty years! This unresolved anger poisons our relationship with our friends and loved ones. It even spoils our relationship with ourselves! We make our own lives mean and miserable instead of happy and full. Very often the feeling is, "Why should I forgive them? What they did was WRONG!" But, is forgiveness for those who only do us right? Most people have a hard time forgiving others simply because they have a wrong understanding of what forgiveness is! When you forgive someone, it does not mean that you condone or are legitimizing their behavior toward you. To forgive them means that you refuse to carry painful and debilitating grudges around with you for the rest of your life! You are "refusing" to cling to the resentment of them having done you wrong. You are giving yourself some immediate relief from your OWN anger!
To forgive, then, is an act that we do on our OWN behalf.
It has nothing to do with "lifting" the other person's sin! You are not doing it for their sake. You are doing it for yourself. This is a choice you are making on your OWN terms in order to relieve your OWN pent-up emotions. The book, Managing And Coping With Anger contains an in-depth analysis of this four step process plus ten (10) carefully designed exercises, called homework, to help you to completely master the anger management process.
Just in case anyone here is feeling a little "out of control" **big smile**

"You assume because you can muster up enough metatags on Google" Well, OK you got me there. If you could explain exactly what the fck that means I'll give it a shot. Are you, in some strange foreign way trying to ask if I am a mechanic or a parts guy at a dealership like you? The answer is NO. Sorry, that is not my specialty.
Care to share where I said I was an expert at everything..... or anything for that matter. Does my intelligence intimidate you that much? Do you feel so inadequate that you have to lash out with nonsense such as "berating and humiliating simple ignorance." Now, I might be wrong, but ignorance is pretty humiliating all by itself and I don't really see much point in berating inanimate objects, soooo....... I don't quite understand that comment.

This was not really called for either John.2 things, Alec. both you and he could have left the thread alone and not put your litte quips in. But you did.
Your judgement on what and what is not called for is way askew, I have no desire to use it as a measure. Dave was given his outs and he didn't want to take them. You made it worst because you basically challenged him to keep posting things against me.

Well then we'll just have to agree to disagree.
The way you treated Dave was pretty sh1tty too.
You berated them both, then you got OWNED. You were wrong. She was right.
That is all.

And speaking of which...I'd like to point out the fact that you have just about as many posts in this thread as I do...hmmm...who's all "look at me, look at me" now??
I really just don't get the attitude?...but whatever. You are the reason why the words attention whore were coined.
If I would have said that to you in person, you wouldn't have thought twice about it. So, now it's something because someone else got the panties bunched up over it.

You thought you were right based on the written word. You gave no validity to what she was told by her dealer. (that was personal)
Then, you were proven to be wrong...the dealer screwed up on the key entry.
But you kept on with it.

Fascinated!
Fascinated that 2 women on opposite sides of the United States both think that the "what have you done for me lately" way of thinking is the way most people operate.
That believe that everyone is a friend and stays that way until they do something bad against them. That linear line of thinking baffles the hell out of me, but then again so does soap bubbles.

Your delusions of grandeur are beyond comprehension. I have a large chip and a few screws IN my shoulder, but that's about it.
Sister, if I were to attack you, you would know it and there would be know beating around the bush BS like Alec is trying to do now. You don't care for some of my adjectives and adverbs, fine. But, don't overrate this as an "attack" of some sort. I was pointing out something very obvious that no one else seemed willing to bring up for over a month.

The fact remains: I was not lying.Wrong again. Just like Bebe above. I did not continue anything. My last post was #86 in which you said FRONT where your warranty work clearly states REAR. That's where I put it red bold. You stated, something like, so my FRONT diff was replaced then. and I bolded and red colored the needed parts to point out that it contradicted what you said. It was well after that something was brought up about the work order and junk.
I did not bring it up again after that post until Dave tried to get his little jab in. Then Alec, Bebe and you.
So, there was no "continue to try and prove you lied"

LMAO, that stupid inbred fat dick called me a liar for weeks over an AE called THE BOSS. He never did have the ball to apologize that he was wrong.
Apologizing or forgiving is not something he can do with those high moral standards of his.No, I called you a liar for all of the ****ty lies you've told and continue to tell. Must be good for the soul and help with the mourning process or something I guess.
You are the one that was trying to tell me that Dennis or Drty was The Boss. I called you a liar because I set you up to see if you were indeed lying to me about everything, and low and behold you were even after telling me what great friends we were.
