Hummer-hater cops?

I'm not sure how prevalent this is, but was surprised when I stumbled across this comment when reading about the image us sportbike riders have amongst the LEO community:

I'm also the same way with people who drive the biggest SUV they can find. You have more of a responsibility when you drive something like that. I'm more likely to give a ticket to somebody doing 15mph over in a Hummer then I am to write somebody driving a Civic doing the same amount over. Whether I'm right or wrong, you decide. But that?s just me.

I always thought the rule was "9 you're fine 10 you're mine" as far as speeding goes. Not sure why any law enforcement officer would say that about SUV's; their opinion of course. The cops around here in UT are nice to me and I speed all the time; however, I use an Escort detector,(X50 - passport 8500), and I don't tailgate the weak and the slow... its just harder on my brakes... Besides, H1's and 2's are as aerodynamic as a brick and are easier to pick up on radar and laser. Just got to know your terrain well enough to speed / play hard...

I havent been pulled over in ages, however it seems to me that if a person is speeding then regardless of what they are driving they are breaking the law. Special treatment shouldnt be given or taken away depending upon what a person drives. I was also under the impression that you have a 10% variance allowance on the speed due to speedo error. I think the jealousy thing enters into the equation many times. The last time i was pulled over, a small jelly bean car ran the stop sign just like me, but I was the one that got pulled over in my avalanche. Was it fair he let the jelly bean car go....no. So why dont the cops hate the expensive bimmers, mercedes and other high end vehicles?

So being more strict on speeding kind of makes sense.

Also, I have never heard of a cop giving a 15mph buffer...I have always heard 10 or more and you get a ticket.

So basically you are saying that you feel the cops should now pull you over when they wouldn't have in your old truck? :p

I agree that a larger vehicle can do more damage and should maybe take more precautions but to give the driver of one a speeding ticket but not the vehicle running right along with it because it is smaller is not right.

i've been pulled over once since getting the big truck. The officer was very to the point and after he realized i wasn't intoxicated, was just plain nice.

He asked what i did for a living, we talked about it for a minute or two. he said "well, i don't want to cost you 100 of those hard-earned dollars, but sir, that is a really nice truck" and was on his way.

So that sure wasn't hummer hate.

I agree that a larger vehicle can do more damage and should maybe take more precautions but to give the driver of one a speeding ticket but not the vehicle running right along with it because it is smaller is not right.Exactly...my Xterra is 1000lbs heavier than my S10...so it is more dangerous to other drivers...so I should be more likely to get a ticket in the Xterra.

The heavier your vehicle the more dangerous you are to others.

i don't necessarily disagree with that logic, but on the other hand, the law is the law and speeding is speeding.

You could reasonably argue as well, with similar logic to support your case, that you should be ticketed for driving a run-down POS. its lower part quality and integrity makes IT more hazardous to other drivers. more likely to blow something and do a spontaneous lane change or whatever...

is there any actual concrete non-biased-by-enviro-loons data that demonstrates that since the SUVs hit the streets and then grew, more people die on the roads?

because while i do think about the H2 and its size - i mean, i'm alot more able to mangle somebodies Impala than a Porsche - i can see the road ahead of me sooooooooo much better. peek right over a 'burban -vs- not seeing over even a minivan or whatever.

anyway, does such data exist?

The other day at the off ramp the troopers were checking seat belts,stickers ect.

The police here are the most friendliest out of my list of Hummer fans. There's not many here and they recognize me instantly followed by a wave. Especially from the female officers.;)

Can't say the same for the cops in Idaho.:(

Not so in Florida where almost every cop I know has at least one big truck in the family. Go to a few hundred accidents and you almost have to buy one if you care about your family. Now "ricers" are anouther story. Watch an F-250, Hummer, and a lowered accord with exhaust, and lousy pant job. Guess who gets pulled over every time.;)

Never had a problem in the H2 so far, then again I usually keep it under 80 on the interstate. Now, my streetbike (RC51) is a different story.

Regarding the original subject, you'll find "haters" of something in all walks of life, but doesn't mean they all are. Most LEO I've had contact with on the road, seem to treat you based on the way you treat them.
X2, Had m last "speeding ticket" in Europe on the Autobahn 1985,figure that. :)
