I just had to quote one of their posts from that site:

"Re: Who has actually driven the competition?
I guess I should contribute to the thread I started http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

X Terra: Drove one of these 3 months ago. I wasn't behind the wheel all that long but I was overall satisfied with the drivability of the truck. I did not find the X comfortable during my test drive and the interior was not of the highest quality. Aside from ease of entry, I found the backseat of the X less enjoyable then the FJC I sat in when it was in DC.

LR3: Man, if only they knew how to keep these things running. This was hands down my favorite truck to drive. The truck is comfortable in every seating position, including a usable 3rd row. The fit and finish is leaps and bounds above their like priced competitors. Off road this truck is amazing, especially when you consider the size and weight of it. The truck had ample power and incredible road manners as well.

Most suvs try and blend both on and off road abilities usually at the expense of one another and this was just not the case with the LR3. It did everything well.

The truck comes with a 50K, 4 year bumper to bumper warranty. Even knowing that no matter what happened to the truck for the first 4 years I owned that i would be covered I could not pull the trigger, there are just too many reported MAJOR faults. Air suspension, sending units, leaks, Nav problems, etc.... Damn shame too.

Jeep Wrangler Owned 2 of these, a 94 and a 97. Both were great trucks while under warranty. Too many recurring faults caused me to unload the trucks and until I have a lot of time on my hands for repairs and the funds to keep it as a second truck I will not be driving one.

Hummer H3 I test drove this truck last night and to be honest that drive was my main motivation for this thread. I was fully prepared to hate this rig and carried more prejudice into the showroom then their average buyer. Bottom line, I do not hate this truck. I was impressed with the fit and finish of the interior and aside from the oversized (thick) steering wheel and the lack of space near the gas pedal I had no real complaints. One of the things that has been harped on is the H3's lack of power. While this truck isn't a barn burner, the truck is very torquey and handles it's road tasks sufficiently. As long as your not a pedal to floor type driver I don't predict speed being a real issue, these are trucks after all.

Off road the H3 should do very well. The truck has excellent approach and departure angles and good ground clearance with the upgraded tire/suspension package. My salesperson did take the H3 over their on site "off road" course with obstacles that would stop many of the other trucks listed. I don't think, given the stats of the FJC, that the FJ would have had any major problems either.

When you consider the warranty (4 yrs, 50K miles), the price (a H3 with the adventure package is very comparable to a loaded FJC, when you consider that the FJ is MSRP right now and the H3 can be negotiated) and the features not found on the FJC (sunroof, 4 real doors, available Nav, functional bumper, AT Tires, and others) I don't see the H3 as the blight on humankind that I originally thought it was. When you factor in that the dealer has a couple corporate demos with 3K miles on them that are discounted 2K below the price of a new one and carry a 6 year, 100K mile bumper to bumper warranty, the truck becomes even more attractive. I'm not sold on this rig but it has definitely caught my interest.

Not to get too far off topic, but if I were making this decision in a vacuum I'm not sure what direction I would go in. Both trucks accomplish what I need out of a new truck. Off roadability, seating for 4 in a utilitarian package. However, the community that surrounds the H3 is amazingly unbalanced. Every gripe I have had about some of our "out of control" posters on this board seems so insignificant when compared to the people that post on the H3 boards. That is about as polite as I can say it, they are just a different group of people. While I can see myself being active in Toyota Wheeling clubs and communities there is just no way I could every foresee myself "over there". In the FJ I would look forward to running into another owner. In the H3 I think I would dread it.

Just my opinion based on my experiences."

Not a bad post against the H3's, there were several complimentary praises, up until the point that this guy blasts H3 Owners for having crappy personalities!?!?!?!? WTF? I like the FJ's and would like to see how well they can take a beating, but my friend that has one is afraid to take his offroad!!!! What does that say about them?

THIS DOES MEAN WAR!!!!
No pun intended, but most of the FJ's I have seen all have chicks driving them!!!! That is except for one friend... but he is gay.
Not that their is anything wrong with that.... :p

No wonder why the magazines do not waste their time comparing the FJ's off road capability to that of the obviously superior H3.

But then again, what do you want from a pretty "FJ chick-rig"

If you think this board is full of clowns, you don't have to visit it! We will gladly refund your misery.

I visited an FJ site recently and the main difference I noticed was the majority of the posters over there were young kids, so I have to take their posts and opinions with a grain of salt.

This board has some great members. I have seen very little disrespect. Plenty of good natured ribbing though! Most of the members seem to talk small, but walk big - something I aspire to do. I have met many people here who are friendly and helpful, especially when it comes to information and experience about the H3 vehicles.

I particularly like driving in hurricanes!!! There has only been one here since I brought mine down. Actually, when I brought mine down here last year from Ca in August, we passed thru a hurricane during the last 200 miles.
Sure am glad the H3's are heavy. It was 60-80 MPH winds and horizontal rains. Probably would have blown an FJ right into a ditch somewhere!!!

So tell me a little bit about yourself....how did you end up in Cabo?

Against other advice, I will take my chances - Here goes!!!

Kind of a funny story. I was a CPA working like 90 hours a week for Arthur Andersen & Co, living in Orange County, hating my job. Nice area, but just way too crowded now. I answered a small three line ad in the Sunday LA times that read something like this:
"CPA WANTED
MUST BE WILLING TO TRAVEL TO CABO SAN LUCAS
AND PUERTO VALLARTA"
Sounded like a dream job. Fortunately for me, they hired me to be their controller at a Hotel/Condo Project in PV. Was in PV 1998 - 1999, then moved here in 1999.
Great surf, great fishing, no 90 hour weeks, mellow friends, great beach camping here!!!
There are more and more H3's here in town. I think there are like 8 of them here now and a bunch of H2's and I think there are 3 H1's. I guess that is just because they are the perfect vehicle for this location. They have been building a Hummer dealership for a while now and it will open someday - so I can finally get the rear diff serviced!!! There are a couple FJ's here, but I do not recall seeing any of them dirty yet!!! (Had to throw that in for you know who!!!)
I changed companies a couple years ago and now work for a new developer here in Cabo. It is going to be a very nice private residence club for golf and fishing. Here is our website: www.chilenobayclub.com (http://www.chilenobayclub.com/)
Pricing is not for the faint of heart!!! It is actually an environmentally responsible project, all water is desal created, at least 50% of the power will be generated by solar and wind sources, onsite treatment plants create all irrigation water, we are using eco friendly building materials, etc.
Anyway, this is a great place to live, 2 hour flight to go see my folks in Ca. nightime star viewing is still great with so little city lights here - another pasttime I enjoy. We now have a great movie theatre here. It is actually the best movie theatre I have ever been in. Eight cinemas, one VIP cinema complete with full-size leather recliners and wiaters to serve you!

Lance,
Post the VINs of the Hummers down there so we can check to see if they're stolen U.S. rigs. Don't laugh - it's VERY common to see nice 4X4s down there that are stolen from the U.S.

lance-n
06-11-2006, 04:36 AM
Sounds like alot of work to go sneaking around checking VIN's!
I know that 2 of them were bought here at the new dealership, a black lux and a yellow lux, although the dealership isn't even finished yet! Another one has BCN plates, from the dealer in Tijuana and the rest are pretty much California plates driven by expats. All of the rigs are well taken care of so I doubt they have been stolen. The police are pretty tough on registration here. I am planning on taking some pics of mine tomorrow in the East Cape. I will post them if they come out nice.

Lance - Are the car rental companies renting H3's down there yet? I usually go to Cabo once a year and end up renting some strange econo box that's not even available in the US.

I saw one the other day that the people said they rented, but not from the traditional rental companies. I believe that Esperanza, Las Ventanas and Palmilla have their own rental fleets that include very nice vehicles - Mercedes 350's, LR3's, H2's, H3's, BMW 5 and 7 SUV's, etc.
I believe you have to stay with those resorts to have access to those rental pools. That would be a good business opportunity here to have a high end rental co. Out group only offers suburbans - so far!!! I will be pushing for the H3's!!!

Great surf over the weekend. Sorry, no pics!!!
