First off - This is a great forum. Thanks all.

This has been a interesting issue which I don't know what it is. I have a standard (non adventure) model H3, just 10k miles, bought in 8/05.

Often in the mornings right when I start up, there is a fast clicking/tapping noise from the engine area. However it is ONLY in the morning, and when you start it up later in the day (even after 8 hours say at work going home) it does not make this noise and idle's normally. If in the morning I drive it just a block, the sound is gone. I brought it to the dealer, and even though they had it 2 days to check it out, they say they cannot hear it. I doubt that a little. It's a metallic/plastic sounding fast tick.

Also, this bugs me too - a very slight shrilling fast tick is heard while driving. You can't hear it inside the cab, but if I am driving with the window down and come next to a wall or car, you can hear it bounce off. It's weird.

Ohh - and BTW, for those with black H3's - yes there is an issue of water marks staying in the paint on the fiberglass pieces. It's not a good thing. I am glad I bought the paint protection deal from the dealer, as now they have to warranty the paint for any defects.

Isn't that covered under the 4year 50k mile warranty.

That's debatable. Often dealers are not compelled to do anything regarding minor "wear and tear" on paint surfaces as they would call it. Since I have an easy claim, that's a moot point for me - having not tried to take them to task. However other people I know have had issues like this on other vehicles and lost fighting them on these.

If they can say in anyway that the paint is fine, that from a manufacturers point of view the color and coverage is correct, many dealers are not going to honor the paint in this unless they will admit a defect (good luck) - because you are talking about a blemish here - not a failure of the paint (in their eyes).

Perhaps someone has more about this in working this out.

Sounds like a valve tapping to me. Same with the fast ticking at speed. Just my .02

Thanks - that's what I told them too. At least that's what I would think that it was something in the valve train or cam. Esp. since it seems it is after it has sat for an extended time.

its the fan belt pully squeek , mine does it when its under 60 degrees in the morning . tell the dealer you need the quick fix for the belt / pully squeek , they lube the edge of the belt and it goes away . i have 17k miles this seems to come back about every 4k or so . they fix it everytime :D

INTERESTING!!! Man if you solve this mystery I will owe you one. It does seem to be worse in the cold. But I have heard belts squeek - but this is like a "tap" noise. What kind of lube are they using... I am thinking of trying it myself...
