on the trail. Hey thanks to the peeps on this forum, I did get a spare tie rod @ GMparts or such place and had it on the trail when another H3 broke one. Now I know what changing one takes... alot of muscle torque in a cramp space:eek: . Also... a large crescent wrench, a couple of locking wrenches, a pitch fork looking tool, a small sledge hammer, and a jack lift (maybe). Go get a spare tie rod. DO NOW

Cool!!! Sounds like we are following in the footsteps of our big brother.:D

Did you get any photos of the change out, and what circumstance were you in when it happened???

Details please??

The rod that goes from the steering rack (or pitman arm if a recirculating ball steering box is used) to the steering knuckle.

ETD, what were you doing that ending up breaking the tie rod? I'm just wondering so hopefully I could avoid such a situation.

Thanks,

Michael

[/smartassansweron]he was 4wheeling, want to avoid it, don't wheel.[/smartassansweroff]

Seriously, if you wheel, you will eventually break something and the tierods really look like the weak point in the front end (documented diff troubles excluded), so having a spare on board is relatively cheap insurance.

Luckily it was not my vehicle that broke one and that I had an extra with me for the repair. As for how, as a buddy says, " Worry about the part of the trail that LOOKS easy, that's where you are gonna get stuck (I did) and where you are gonna break something (the other H3 did)". The actual mechanics is as on the thread referenced above by Westhillsat. Exactly as that! As for where, it was on the "flat" part of an obstacle where the guide in the white Jeep is sitting in the photo. That red H3 was about 5 minutes from a big surprise:( .
If you go off road, get a spare. DO NOW   .

they break on anything, keep the wheel strait and don't hit anything

Ok, this might be a stupid question but don't want to miss anything not being a mechanic. Looking at getting a spare tie rod from All Discount, what should I order (http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=214079&chapter=DR1GS06&appSectionid=51858&groupid=51858&subgroupid=2554&componentid=0&make=1000&model=H3&year=2006&graphicID=GS06200&callout=4&catalogid=2)? Looking to get what I need before Tellico. Figure if I don't get it I will need it and if I get it, I will never have a breakage :p

I carried both inner & outer tie rod pieces. The piece that broke on the other H3 was the inner piece. Get both. When I go out next time I will be bringing 3 sets just in case!

Thanks, that is what I figured. Just wondered if I needed anything else listed. I do take comfort in the fact that I have only heard of tie rods breaking on two H3s but better safe than sorry.

BTW, did not lose the front Husky mud flaps despite beliefs to the contrary... at least not this time.:)

Hey, What are the part numbers for both RH and LH inner and outer tie rods? If you have access to the numbers, could you tell me what the serpentine belt number is as well? Do you reccomend an online store to purchase them?

I need to have these extras in the goodie bag while wheelin.
