Hummer-- the Big Car for Big Losers

For a long time, I've found my forehead frowning when I see Hummers. I've developed what I thought was a reflex, just assuming that the people driving them were losers with money-- people with poor self esteem, feelings of penis inadequacy, penis envy, etc.-- who drove these monuments to anti-environmental moronic idiocy. I feel a natural contempt response to Hummer owners and drivers, be they man or woman.

Then I just saw a new ad for Hummer that made it crystal clear that I was dead on. The ad shows a wimpy women who is frustrated and embarassed when a pushy woman butts in front of the line she is in with her child-- it looks like a line to go on a sliding board.

What does this wimpy woman do? She buys a Hummer. The ad shows her feeling bigger and stronger than someone driving a smaller car.

General Motors is flailing, drowning in red ink, laying off tens of thousands, losing billions. Part of their problem is they have spent hundreds of millions building a market for gas guzzling cars for these pathetic losers, even running ads that clearly target them.

The thing is, this ad is appealing to the worst aspects of human nature-- nasty people, revenge, power. Maybe GM ought to start a new playbook and study what the successful Asian companies are doing-- appealing to people's desire to be good, responsible citizens and stewards of the earth.

What's good for GM is clearly NOT good for the USA and GM is experiencing the payback for its failure to care about what's good for the USA. It's tragic, because so many US workers jobs are being lost. There are probably a handful of execs and marketing people who have made these stupid, foolish decisions. They certainly should not be working at GM any more, whoever they are.

I feel a natural contempt response to anyone who can't understand another person's interests and instead decides to label them as losers. Just because someone has different values than yours doesn't make your values the right ones.

A lot of people do drive HUMMERs just to be different, nothing more nothing less. A smaller segment owns them because of their capabilities. I seriously doubt more than a handful drive them to intentionally waste resources.

You might be thinking, "why would you ever need to be able to go off road in one of those things." You'd probably be right about 2/3 of the HUMMER owners. But for the remainder, you're just facing a mental barrier of intolerance of other people's hobbies and professions.

There are quite a few HUMMER owners who use them for their off road capabilities. Most probably do this recreationally, but some are professionals and volunteers in rescue and disaster response organizations.

If you still whining about why anyone should even want go off road in any motorized vehicle, then you are certainly deserved of my contempt for your narrow mindedness.

To apply such a negative label on an entire group of people simply based on their choice of vehicle to drive is unfair. I currently have a Viper and an H2. I have owned a Porsche, a Corvette and a few other cars that are usually associated with your "shortcoming overcompensation" theory and trust me, there is absolutely nothing I am trying to overcompensate for in terms of anatomy or otherwise. I enjoy sports cars and I enjoy the feel and ability of the H2. It is the theorists like you that are so insecure and full of envy that you deflect your inadequacies onto others. I would love to hear your theory on my 5 carat diamond rolex or my 42 foot boat. What childhood trauma am I trying to cover up with those? Why mention those other aspects of my life when they are irrelevant to your prejudice of a group of car owners. Neither I nor anyone should have to prove to you that we balance out our selfish egotistical vehicles with concern for others because our vehicles indeed need no such justification. So if I told you that I teach at a dental school for free one day per week when I could be working in my office making "umteen" thousand dollars and that I am in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, does that now make it OK for me to have my toys? No, it doesn't. It was OK to begin with. Fast, powerful are flashy. It is people like you who aren't comfortable with what others view them as that will hinder their own happiness and success. How many doctors out there drive ann older car or a cheaper car not because they want to but because they're afraid their patients will view them as "too successful" and making "too much money". Those people are "enlightened" am I overcompensating, is that it? I am very comfortable in my own skin and I enjoy everything life has to offer. I just don't fear judgement and envy because they are born of weakness and inadequacy, not enlightenment or social awareness. My cars use a lot of gas, sure. However, I started a dental program that works on indigent and abused women for free. I guess that makes my Hummer OK. Change your perspective and watch who you call a loser.

And to think, I am looking at buying a H1 as a toy for the mud. But for real how is it that this guy forgot about the Excursions, Esclades, and whatever the heck Dodge makes. Come on, this man reminds me of a certain political leader that seems confused about what he is saying.
I drive what I like and I like what I drive. If that makes me a loser than so be it. But this loser retired at 40 and is enjoying life.
