The first stand-alone Hummer dealership in Delaware will open near New Castle this September, dealership managers said.
NuCar Connection is investing $3.5 million to build a 10,000-square-foot building on two acres on U.S. 13 that used to be the site of the Lynnhaven Inn, across from New Castle County Airport. The showroom will be 3,000 square feet -- large enough to display five Hummers.
NuCar began selling Hummers in 1999, but the oversize SUVs have shared a showroom with Chevrolet models. General Motors Corp., which manufacturers Hummers, recently has required all of its dealers to build separate showrooms for the SUVs.
"It's an outstanding idea," said Bill Damm, 46, of Moorestown, N.J., who has owned four Hummers. "I am walking into a Hummer dealership because I want a Hummer. I don't want to buy a Chevy pickup truck."
The new building is designed like a Quonset hut and airplane hangar, reflective of Hummer's military roots.
