Towing loads-- H2 vs H3

So I spent the last week bouncing around the 4 corners region/Royal Gorge area of Colorado and towing a 3200 or so pound camper behind my H3. Flat areas were ok- 60-70mph fairly easily.

But crap if the mountain passes werent painfull! 20mph max on Wolf Creek Pass and other fairly lame grades.
I nearly convinced myself to trade my H3 in for a H2 even though it probably won't fit in my garage, blah blah blah....

My question is this- how many tow a camper with their H2 and how does it perform in the mountains? My little RV is only a pop-up camper, dry weight of 2800 #'s with a 800 #' cargo capacity. I try and travel light, but it doesnt always work out that way.....

I'm giving serious thought into trading my '06 H3 with 20k on it for a used H2 with a few more miles.... Will I be sorry??

Won't be sorry @ All! ;) You would have no problem towing up to 5K#'s! IMHO! lol :)

Found the same problem towing my boat. Flat land, no problem. Once I hit the hills, I slowed considerably. 20 mph ? No, but definatly slowed. It even slowed pulling 2 motorcycles on a small trailer up any hills. Only consideration with the H2 is the everyday milage and overall girth. If these are no problem, do it;)

I tow about a 1500 pound trailer and note that the temp goes uo quite a bit. Not in to the red but surprised that it goes up 20+ degrees for such a light load. I am in Arizona and I know it is warm here but not that bad !!

We looked at a h3 last month as we thought they looked interesting. But after a short drive we decided it was like a Jeep Cherokee and not for us. The in-line 5 cylinder lacks power. Gas mileage not that much better than the h2. Very nice vehicle though.

In my H2 SUT, I towed about 8000lbs (K5 full size Blazer and the trailer) from Atlanta Ga to Murphy NC which goes directly over the mountains. It towed just fine. Not like an F250 diesel, but fine. I slowed to about 35 MPH on the steepes grades and got about 7.5 MPG throught the mountains:eek: but, it usually gets 11 MPG for me, and about 9MPG for non mountains towing. IMO they are way more comfortable and quiet that an H3. H2 takes up every bit if a parking space though, and cant fit in to some compact spots in the cities.

k9tim ,, I tow with my H2 usually loaded over the g.c.v.w. It tows excellent on the flats and mountains. I do have to hammer it a little in the mountains , but you have to with a Mack truck also. The air rear suspension makes for a great ride also. doug

Thanks for the replies folks. Now I just have to start thinking about whether or not I want to try to make it all work (a switch that is)....

This would have never been an issue if it wasnt for the camper.....
Then again, I could always just only camp in eastern Colorado (blah)

I have a 31' Formula Fast-tech power boat and on the trailor I'm looking at over 9000llbs. I know my H2 SUT could tow the sh*%t out of the boat but the limit that GM gives the H2 is (If I remember correctly) 7500 lbs. Aren't you concerned that if you get into an accident you're insurance won't pay because your over your towing weight limit? INSURANCE is the ONLY reason I don't tow my boat with my SUT.
