Ok I have the base model and not having a rear locker sucks this is the first 4wd vehicle I have ever owned that doesnt have a locking rear diff. I work at a GM store in parts, but we are not a hummer dealer. I need some of you guys help trying to figure out what all is needed for me to put a rear locker in. In my parts catalog I found an e-locker kit which consist of the locking mechanism and a couple of other components and then the switch not sure what else I will need. Also it looks like the switch is in the dash with the 4wd selector switches, but I cant figure out where it would go. I am also not sure about the wiring. I might just need to wait for an aftermarket kit just thought some of you guys might have an idea.

Thanks
Tanner

So why the hell didn't you buy the adventure package?

We had only one hummer on our lot it had been sitting for almost 3 months and they needed to get rid of it so I got a deal on it. Also at the time I bought it I was under the impression that they all had locking rear diffs. Since on the 4wd switch there is a damn picture of a lock on the button IMO its stupid to even make a Hummer that doesnt have a locker. Is that enough explination for ya

If you add a rear locker you are probably going to want 33" tires.

With 33" tires you would want or wish you had 4.56:1 axle ratios like the Adventure Package

So think about the cost of:

New ring and pinion gears front and rear

Rear Locker and all switches and wiring etc

I thought the base H3 already came with 4.56 axles

according to this site, 4.56 axles are standard. Good thing too, cause that's an expensive upgrade.

And a vast majority of H3 owners really don't really need the rear locker. Wait until you need to buy another rig, that would be the economical solution. All H3's (base/lux/adventure) have 4:56 rear ends according to the research done on this forum. Adventure package does have the lower crawl ratio.

I will have to check the brochure for the 2006 H3.
I could be wrong :)

Why would they put in 4.56:1 axles with the 32" tires if they want to be able to get 20MPG

Brochure shows different rear end ratio for manual trannys only. But research seems to indicate 4:56 rear end on all H3's. Fancy brochures by GM Marketing types with all kinds of CYA disclaimers are suspect.

At minimum you will need:
Electric locking diff case
Lockign diff side gear
Lock pin
Locking diff clutch spring
Locking diff ball bearing plate in board and outboard plates
Locking diff ball bearing assembly
Locking diff coil plate
Locking diff coil assembly
Diff carrier locking pins (eight or ten)
There is more too, and then there is the wiring, switch, new TCCM and of course a reprogram of the BCM/PCM, and maybe, just maybe (I'm not sure) you might even need a new BCM or PCM.

Just out of curiosity, I called the Hummer service department to ask about installing a locker on the H3? He explained to me until they come out with a factory Kit, the techs wouldn?t even attempt to install a locker because of the fear of something breaking later down the road and them being responsible. Also, he said he has not heard of any factory locker kit even coming out in the future for the H3? So like Bebee said to me.... 35 inch tires, and a good winch should do the trick...:D

You can replace the entire diff and axle.:D

Well after doing some more reseach in my parts catalog it wouldnt be feesable like most of you have pointed out. I guess I will just wait to see if an aftermarket kit becomes available or wait and get the locker when I trade this one in. The 35" tires are already on it and yes they help, but a locking rear makes alot of difference I never even realized how much until now that I dont have it.

Thanks Guys

The worst thing is that the sales person never said anything about the adventure model.... But, I should of did way more research.... So no one to blame but me...

Don't lose heart....you will be surprised what you can do without a locker:D

You still have 4lo lock
You still have Traction Control

You might have to a little better at picking your line in extreme situations, but don't be afraid to get out there.

It is still a kick a$$ truck:D:D

No locker here and still having a blast. Try SuperSwampers, they're cheaper than lockers and accessories, I think.

if one was to switch out the whole differential, other than electronics what might have to be replaced? f5fstop mentioned replacing the axle also, why would this be needed?

Just being curious not really planning on doing it, unless it costs less than the adventure package upgrade!:D

Oh yes, also does anyone have an idea how much the locking diff costs and rear axles if needed to be replaced?

Here is a link to eaton elockers? Would any of these work on the H3 as a replacement to the diff on the base model? http://www.traction.eaton.com/prod7.htm

Thanks!:)

Last time I looked at the parts manual, it was only an entire axle replacement. That has probably changed by now, and more items are serviced.
