I just bought my H3 last week. I bought the white with sunroof and adventure pak. Am really happy except i noticed quite a bit of rust under neath. Is this normal?? How can a new H3 already have rust under neath? Any one else notice any rust underneath by rearend and drive train??

Pics please......
We all have rust on the driveshaft and rear differential.
When was it built?
How long has it been sitting on the lot?

Probably just surface rust. I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if it really bothers you, take it back to the dealer and have them clean it up.

I was helping her along the thought process, you know, its normal for a truck that might already be a few months old and had more than one or two baths:rolleyes:

Don't worry about the undercarriage surface type rust in California. Leave it to the east coasters to give it the real winter salt treatment and report back later.

WOW, I've never seen one that clean. But yes, that looks pretty normal. It's surface rust and it happens the first time it gets water on it.
Looks icky, but it's fine.
Now, go get it dirty:D:D:D

You want to pay the extra charges to paint something that will form surface rust? I guess they could paint with POR and then charge extra, but why? This is surface rust, and does not affect the operation of the vehicle. Crawl under a Jeep, look at the rust under the tub. (Jeeps were noted to rust through in the front tub area, that is why Jeep owners...me included...applied POR paint to the tub).
With the crap on the US roads most undercarriage paint would be blasted off in no time anyway. Take the vehicle down gravel or dirt roads and the undercarriage will be blasted off faster. Hell the painted frame under my vehicle has a billion stone chips, so the paint under there really helped.
Next you will be blasting the firepath on the cast iron rotors for rusting in a rain storm. :D

The rust is fine. It forms a coating that keeps the metal from corroding further by inhibiting oxygen from contact with the exposed metal. As road debris contacts and knocks nicely formed rust coatings, it simply fills in itself and continues protecting.
Due to the thickness of the metal that's not treated to prevent rust, it would take approximately 247 years for the rust to create enough damage for there to be a problem, unless you just don't like the color.
You can always buy something like this, and the color will change.

Is that rust normal? I think so. I've seen the drive shaft like that on new (2 months) hummers on the dealer lot, and old hummers (brand new but sitting 10 months). I bought an 06 that was sitting for 9 months. I checked out the under carriage before I bought it. Looked better than some of the ones that had only been there for a couple months.
I will do an experiment/be guinea pig. I purchased an anti rust package for the new beast. After I took delivery, I noticed they spreaded the whole undercariage with some think black crap. Hopefully it will slow down the inevitable rust you get from driving in the upstate NY snowbelt. (Boy do they love salt around this part of the US!) So, we'll see how it goes for the next for years.
There was some rust when I bought it. I am deciding not to worry about it.

Have used rustolem paint with a brush with sucess. My other 4x B4 oil changes wash under carridge drive up on ramps after change. Inspect wipe and paint areas of concern with about 1" brush using back rustoleum.

You mean like a Vega front fender? :D
I believe you are referring to aluminum, which forms a conversion coating, not the steel undercarriage.
