View Full Version : Door handle solution to break-in's??
Steve R
02-13-2006, 06:35 AM
Once again my H2 got messed with while I'm at the gym. The bastards gained entry through the passenger-side door handle. They found my wallet and took nothing else. I'd like to thank GM for saving themselves $10 in metal and giving so charitably to the poor in making such an easy vehicle to break into.
Can someone, aside from the jokes, direct me to any real solutions to this? In particular, some powder-coated black metal plates that attach over the plastic?

I have been working with Jimmijammer to get these constructed for the H2. There is a beta set on the way to me. Once they arrive, I will take installation photos and check fitment as these have never been installed on an H2.
If anyone lives in Pheonix area, I may need your help if I run into issues. If this is the case, there will be a free set for your troubles. Please chime in if you are in area and interested.

And what do you care if people should learn how to break into Hummers: you don't even own one!
And the references to the gym? I-bitch, I've lost more muscle tissue on one of my bike rides then you'll ever have. I used you for entertainment traction, get over it. And try to be more interesting, your replies aren't even close to funny.

Wow, you are pure comedic genius!
The spin class at Women's Workout World does not really count as a bike ride.
Yeah I don't own a Hummer. I just to buy Hummer stuff from forum members just because I'm bored and not interesting at all.
Funny? was not even trying.
You might look into maybe a dietican if you are losing muscle tissue during work-out's. Unless that's some new bodybuilding regimine or something.

How about that, I still "got it" http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
What threw me off was your 5 replies in a row, smacks of pretencious kid. My bad, I suppose you're the real deal. Perhaps I'm a tad irritable after those bastards made off with about $500 and my drivers license...there's nothing funny about having your car broken into. And posting the pic is so others can see what is being done and how to perhaps prevent it. I sincerely doubt these low-life thieves use the internet or learn stuff from it.
As for muscle loss....depends who you talk to. After riding for a couple hours and pushing hard, your creatine-phosphate and glycogen storage is fairly depleted....many say the proteins in your muscle tissue begin to breakdown and you essentially start "burning muscle". I ride a mountain bike 3x per week, ascneding some 2,400 feet over the course of nearly 2.5 hours....there ain't a woman in a spinning class who could keep up with me.
I weight-train 3x per week as well. I only wish I could have caught those slimeballs breaking into my H2...now there's a fantasy!

While I don't have a solution to the door handle problem. I did install an aftermarket alarm so at least it will go off, unlike the factory alarm http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif And since nobody pays attention to alarms going off nowadays, I installed the siren inside the cabin. I figure no thief in the right mind would want to stay in there and risk his hearing + not aware what's going on outside.. And for outside, instead of the common pulsing horn, mine is steady on - it's loud and annoying so it get's attention http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Steve,
I did not see this "diagram" that is mentioned, but based on what you described, mine was similarliy broken into on the driver's side. The key entry was forcably pried which also cracked the black plastic backing. Upon getting it replaced at the dealer it was advised by Service to have the plastic backing replaced in chrome. The estimate for that was $500 plus for each front door. I did not have this done. However, I can't imagine having the metal backing will prevent it from happening again in so much what the Service guy was recommending was more of a visual deterrent than anything else?

You might be using the nutrient storage but not breaking down muscle tissue unless you are suffering from some kind of necrosis.

All doppelganging aside, the chrome backing does prevent this method of theft. It is solid metal, not plastic, therefore it cannot be pried up. Those things are expensive because of the labor time to install them. It involves disassembling each door panel, removing each window, and a lot of other stuff. The part is not exactly cheap either.
You'd be much better off just getting an alarm and it would even be cheaper than buying those blingy chrome door buckets.
Get an alarm and be done with it.
Steve R
02-13-2006, 11:42 PM
I'm not going to freak, it only seems to happen at the gym. The thieves rightly figure that anyone going into the gym is likely to need their drivers license to drive to the gym...but then they won't want to take their wallet into the gym. In my case they saw me reach up into my roof/above console and put something in there. They didn't open my center console, the glove box or even take my cell phone left out: they knew exactly what and where to go. BASTARDS!!!
An alarm may stop them, but only after they smash the door piece and cause some damage. I've got a line on a direct price deal for metal replacements....it's gonna cost, but...I dunno.

How about you buy me a plane ticket down there and we stake out the gym parking lot and beat the f*ck out of the sh*tbag with an aluminum ball bat, urinate on him/her and then call the cops from a pay phone? It would be prefect for an internet pictorial. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So tempting......
I asked the manager at the gym if he's contacted the police about the seemingly regular burglar harvesting of the parking lot...he said he did and the police essentially told him they have bigger fish to fry...like the time they pulled me over on Sunset and cited me for having no front license plate.
Oddly enough, now that they hit my H2, they probably will figure (correctly) that I will never make that mistake again.
The gym actually has a patrol going through the parking lot, but they sold too many memberships to the typical new-years-resolution crowd and I had to park way over in another section...a section they apparently don't own nor patrol: that's where I went wrong....figuring they patrolled it.
Ya know, if I was so lazy I would go out there and stake-out the lot for a wee bit of payback! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
You may recall a year or so ago I got keyed in this same lot. If only I weren't addicted to racquetball....

Hey Steve R:
Best solution is to get the alarm system...saved a gal in our group one day from a hit and run...caught the idiot before he got away. She had a pretty nice 2-way "Viper" unit...signaled her from a couple of blocks away.
It's a shame there is so much garbage on most of the threads on this forum...certainly didn't start out that way. Now to discuss anything, it turns into a "gay" toilet discussion. Perhaps we can start a properly moderated section that will stay clean, and have any losers banned/censored/deleted.
I guess maybe that might be the Tech section....then perhaps this section title can be changed to Potty Mouth Discussion for losers and poseurs.
Sorry for the break-in Steve...the gym still doesn't have a parking lot camera after all the issues there?

Steve,
Sorry to hear about your break in. If you decide to replace the plastic crap w/ the billet buckets and handles, give Rhonda a call at Bones Enterprises in Atlanta (678 990 2876). She will sell you a set of SMA billet chrome door buckets and handles for about $200 shipped. I picked up a set from her, and they are awesome.

There's a chance I won't do a darn thing and just leave the damage the way it is...it's not very noticable & I'm pretty lazy. Actually very lazy.
BUT if I do something, those replacements Michael spoke about sound great, thanks Michael!!!! Hope I can get them in black.
As for the gym, they ran out of space in their main parking lot and I had to park far away where they don't patrol or have cameras. I didn't realize they didn't patrol that area. This is a problem that occurs each year when membership blossoms as result of New Year Resolutions. There is another area I could park in where it's darker, BUT they do patrol & have cameras. Regardless, I will never leave anything valuable in my H2 again...when at the gym.
Honestly, I really don't care that much...in the course of life we all fall victims to crime at some point or another. It's not so much the money but the hassle of getting a new wallet & especially the DMV line to get a new license.
If only I had an english accent and the ability to create phantom accounts on this forum......that would solve everything!
BUT I COULD ALWAYS THROW ANOTHER SHRIMP ON THE BARBY!!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
