I really would recommend the rack. The mounting system is real slick. I have been up on it several times today & there is absolutely no flex whatsoever. Im 165lbs. I dont see why a couple of 200lb men couldn't walk on it. Also, hardware that came with it I felt was hi quality.

Nice, I like! How do you like the Grill Guard? I'm about to order mine, but I wanna know, is it really heavy duty, or is it wussy like the stock one?

This was the first one the dealer installed. he was planning on .5 hour to install. It took 4.5 hours to install by dealer. It does not just bolt on like the stock one. It is like the h1 ones they make which bolt onto the frame and have pins to let it swing down to open the hood. I don't plan on trying it out but as heavy as it is it should protect the front end of the truck from a deer at 60 mph-this is much heavier than stock!

Dr P. Looks Great!

What is the height of the truck now with the rack, lights and tire??

is the syn cable easier to drag out? The regular cable is really heavy dragging it out like the length of the driveway? 20 lbs should make quite a difference when moving the winch in & out of the truck--thanks for the tip.

Thanks--It's dark now. tomorrow I'll try to get you a measurement. I know with the box mounted on the racks I was close to 8ft

It'll take 94" to clear the tire.

Dr p -- what do these grill guards cost? Also, you mentioned it took 4+ hours for the dealer to install. Any idea what the complexity is? What in addition to bolting on is required? I'm wondering if I should not even attempt to intall myself and just have the dealer handle it.

Very awsome rig. Very close to what I plan to get in September.

I'm not sure(I traded in my rear tire carrier in for the grill guard) but I think they go for around 1200. I had the truck at the dealer @ 0730 and they finished the install around 1230. the only thing I saw was the front end torn apart. the guard is bolted to the frame not the hood like the oem one and you have to go through the plastic the drl's are in. I'm quite mechanically challenged. If I haven't taken a course on it I dont try it. The dealer quoted me .5 hours for install and ate the rest which was great of them. I'd call SMA and see what they say about how hard install is. I just don't like having to drill through some of that metal without really good bits. Sorry couldn't be of greater help

Can you post a picture from the side of the truck. I'm interested in the same roof rack. What length is yours, 6 ft or 7.5 ft? Does it cover the sunroof opening?

dr p
04-24-2003, 10:07 PM
Patrick-this is ith 6ft. does not cover sunrooof & does not make much noise at all (nothing like stock light bar!)

also no the Border Collies don't drive. They navigate and leave the driving to dogs who cannot read a map.....

DrP,

Your rig is looking real good. I like the roof rack and the placement of the lights/spare. Looks good.

My best buddy in HS, more years ago than I care to remember, was also named B.P. Not to often have I known many B.P.'s...Last time I saw him, he was headed to Mexico and me to RVN. Never saw him again.

Grim:
I tried to send back to you but this went to administrator Jason-Never worry about too many questions thats why we have the forum.I really like the SMA Grill. It bolts onto the frame not the hood like the OEM one. It's alot heavier. If you have an H1 on the lot with a SMA front grill take a look at it they are about the same design. I had my local GM dealer paint my front grill. someone on another thread said without sending it so someone in California the paint would only last 60-90 days-time will tell. I took the grill off (only 4 bolts-very easy even for someone as mechanically challenged as me) gave it to the dealer one of my patients who works there painted it-I think it was $189 -three days-then I reinstalled myself. The black I painted the grill matches my black truck. The black on the truck is a standard GM black and the shop just matched it. I just went back and looked at your truck-if it was me I would have them match the black on the skid plate-just a thought. I really like your gobi rack. I looked into it but it would have just about taken an act of congress to change the rack to fit my 9" hella's and I wouldn't know what it would have looked like until it was installed. also I paid for my winch with the savings getting the adventure accesories rack. Oh yea-the paint on the grill guard is shiny not mat but its not a high shine. I have no problem with it. I know what you mean about chrome. I had two different state troopers last July just after I got my truck stop me to ask why the grill was chrome. I ordered mine with no chrome and the only theng chrome on it was the grill.

Grill Guard is amazing! I like the look of the factory grill guard better than the wrap around. But I think I like the SMA one even better.

$1200 may be a bit too ouchie on my pocket book right now though. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Also, I'm noticing the distinct lack of chrome on the front of your vehicle. How did you go about painting the grill???

What a truck!

I really like the look of the SMA guard.

All black is awsome!

I have been patiently waiting for my Hummer dealer to be able to get the SMA guard, as of about a month ago he was saying they were not available yet. Has this changed?? (obviously)

Yours is the only truck I have seen one on. (besides SMA trucks) Did your dealer get the guard for you?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks,
John

Right after I made my above post, I called Classic Hummer in Grapevine. At first they didn't know what I was talking about, and said I was the first person to ask about a "SMA Grill Guard" so she said she'd have to call me back.

About 10 minutes later she had a price of $950 for the Grill Guard installed and said she could have it by Friday.

So I told her to go for it! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I thought the SMA Grill Guard was going to look like this:
http://www.smahummer.com/images/serv_hummer_zoom.jpg
It goes up over the hood vent, and looks much cooler in my opinion.

Any idea if this is a future product? Or if they just scraped the idea...

I'm gonna be pretty cranky if I get the current SMA Guard and then this one comes out in the next month or so....

I totally agree and hoped the sma was going to look like your picture-this looks like the second version of the h1 guard. It took them almost a year, however, to come out with this version and the dealer let me trade in my sma rack on the grill guard-opening and closing that thing was the biggest pain in the but every time for golf clubs & dogs-If the one in your pic comes out I'll probably sell mine and get the new one

Brushguard arrived today. I read over the Install instructions, and I'm abit nervous about doing the install myself, but I think I'm gonna give it a shot tonight.

I'll be sure to post lots of pictures of the entrie install when I'm finsihed.

Hey Dr. P., what's your experience with wind noise on the new grill guard. Detonate says his has increased, do you have the same experience?

I previously had the upper light bar with the rallaye 4000's on it. This made so much noise that when I changed to the roof rack mounted behind the sunroof & the lights mounted back on it it makes so much less noise I don't even notice if the grille guard makes any noise. I don't know why the SMA guard would make any more noise than the OEM one?

To me the SMA grill guard seems to jut out a bit more than the factory wrap around. Hard to tell. But I wasn't surprised when Detonate said he noticed the difference. Anyone else have the new SMA guard?
