Just curious how many of you like to do the work adding modifications or how many take the work to someone.
I do both depending on what needs to be done and how much free time I have availible to perform the work. I have most of the tools to about anything automotive

For simple things like adding a brushguard and other external stuff I'll do myself. I enjoy it, and the small set of tools I have do the trick. I don't have the right space to work, so I drive up to a friends place upstate. For any engine work I plan on having that done by someone.

For Lifts, Turbo Chargers, Custom Paint, Welding and so on I do all the MOD's Myself. I love a challenge. Let's face it it's not brain surgery. So what if you trash the suspension so it sits all crooked, ruin the engine so it does not run, mess up the paint so bad its easier to repaint and have poorly done welds break at high speed - If you don't try the stuff you will never learn. Last Night I gave my wife a BOOB JOB. Yeah I took two baggies filled them with Silicone caulk, gave her half a bottle of JACK DANIELS - 6 or 8 sleeping pills and then went to work with my hummer multi tool for the incisions. Sewed her up with some 20lb. test and I gotta say I saved $10,000 - One sits lower then the other, she lost alot of blood so she is not up to gettin me a beer or fixin my food today. But all in all I'm happy that they are a full double D now. I just hope she is up to doin laudry by tonite cuz when I made the first cut and saw all the blood I crapped my pants and GOD knows I'm not touching them - That's womens work.
So to answer your question I do ALL MY OWN MODS!

Hey Cranky...
Question: how much more performance do you think the H2 would benefit by changing out the front-end to an SFA???
And...by lifting the whole thing about 4"....how much more prone to rolling/tipping would you imagine we risk? What height lift would you imagine as optimal...I'm guessing maybe 2"
....Just want to hear your thoughts/opinions, thanks!

Steve R, The lift of the H2 of course changes the center of gravity and the "ROLL". For every centimeter (about 1/2") extra in lift you will increase the center of gravity geometrically and create the effect of 2.5 to 3 % greater instability. SO most lifts over 4 inches require very special skills for off roading. I am not saying this is a bad thing just that like a chainsaw in the hands of a toddler or a PIG wearing a 3 thousand dollar fur coat not all things make sense.

Bought the H2 for a hobbie. I did all of the mods to my 30zxtt, I build 2 zcars into race cars, I have also worked with a machine shop back in the 80's to design and build a formula car (F440) cause I love teh challange and I find it very relaxing after sitting a a @#*# desk all day dealing with whiny scientist.
Don't hav eteh space but have bartered in the past with a couple of race shops that owe me a few hundred thousand favors and they let me use their shop on occasion. I will however farm out work to people that I know can do the job better for less than I can, like the tranny in the 300ZX, when i put it together it worked but not quite like I wanted and I was at the end of my willingness to learn more. rubbing opn motors are better left for those who have that natural ability know plenty of guys that can squeeze hop out of a motor cheaper and faster than I can.

Only thing I have ever paid anybody for, was put a windshield in my rig and the exhaust. But, needless to say, when I rolled it over a couple weeks ago, I decided to do my own windshield, everything else I build...

Yep spent two days retrofitting my chrome gas cap from sma..... it said 5 mins.

Steve R, SFA would increase articualtion, less lifting of the tires when wheeling. But would you want to do that to a late model rig? It's one thing to buy an old IFS Rig and convert, but on a 50K plus rig like a Hummer, I'd consider a front ARB first, and protection from trail rash.
As far as lift. pick your tire size and only modify enough for it to fit. Anytime you lift, up goes the CG, Suspension lift is bettet thanm body lift. All depends on what you run with the rig and how much you want to spend. Crash by far is much more knowlagable in supension design than I am, maybe he will add something.
The best mods for the bucks are tires, lower gears (Diff or Tcase or both), and lockers fr&Rr

Thanks for the info. I concur entirely. Now tell me something: I sense the Steve-ness, but what's the cranky thing all about??? I just don't sense the crankiness?
I did not do the engine mods to mine...obviously. But everything else I did. Soon to add electric fan kit myself.

I do all my own mods no matter what it may be, I have a complete shop set up in my garage. Must be why a lot of the neighbors come over and ask if I can fix/weld or otherwise do something to thier vehicles..
