View Full Version : Out of Gas (for real!)

Been lurking for some time but now find myself in need of some input. Does the H2 have any issues with running out of gas?

IE: My wife (not me, really, I swear) ran out of gas this evening in the middle of rush hour no less. Put in 5 gallons and nothing. It turns over, nice and fast but no go. No smell of flooding that I can tell. It is not on a hill (ain't none in Florida anyways) and I have tried it over several hours. Checked fuses too. I have since towed it home (dealer was closed) however my delimma is that we needed to leave on a trip tomorrow.

Does anyone know if there is something that has to be reset or such to get this thing going or is it a dealer kinda thing? She's only 2 months old!

Modern fuel injected vehicles use an electric fuel pump mounted in the tank.

The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel as it passes through the pump. Guess what can happen to the pump if it runs out of gas. You got it - The fuel pump can be ruined.

I never run my vehicles lower than a 1/4 tank of gas because of this.

One thing for sure... I'd make sure it had about 10 gallons of gas in it before I took it to the dealer. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well, you might have burned up the fuel pump.

I just got a HUMMER last week, so I not all the up to speed on the technicals...but

I also have 98 TransAm which if you run out of gas, you run the risk of ruining the fuel pump.

Nowadays, the pumps are generally in the tank and are cooled by the gasoline. When you run the pump dry they can overheat, and as well it is detrimental to run the pump dry.

The best way to check would be to break a fuel line connection and see if the pump is pumping...or tie in to the shrader valve connection on the fuel rail.
