PennFuture Applauds Passage of Clean Car Rules by IRRC

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2006/11/02/027465.html

HARRISBURG, Pa.--Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture) today praised the Pennsylvania Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) for voting 4 - 1 to approve new regulations requiring cars sold in the Commonwealth to meet more protective pollution standards beginning with the 2008 model year. The regulations were first proposed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) under Governor Tom Ridge, but were delayed. The Rendell Administration sought approval to allow implementation to move forward, despite opposition from well-funded out-of-state special interests.
?The IRRC decision recognizes both the importance of these regulations to clean the air, lower demand and price of gasoline and improve our energy security, as well as the overwhelming support for these regulations by citizens throughout the state,? said John Hanger, President and CEO of PennFuture. ?With less pollution being released, we should see fewer asthma attacks, other breathing problems and cardiac problems, all of which are exacerbated by pollution from cars and trucks. That is great news for the health of one million Pennsylvanians who have respiratory problems.
?This new rule will also help us attract new businesses,? said Hanger. ?As new cleaner cars replace older and more polluting autos, most Pennsylvania counties will finally be able to meet clean air standards for ozone smog pollution, eliminating a major impediment to new businesses moving in.?

Can't wait. We have some of the worst air quality in the nation. Hopefully they'll pass the no-diesel-idle rule soon too, which would allow diesels to idle only 15mins/hour, or something like that...

Do your research goofpork. Your industry pollutes more than the passenger vehicles do.

My favorite part of all these test is the fact that the US, thanks to current standards, pollutes cosiderable less than many third world countries. China is by far the biggest polluter in the world and all the test you want to run in the US will not help until the third world sets standards they can comply with. All the Japanese treaties they want are useless unless they include China, India, indochina, and all the former soviet block countries. Worrying about exhaust here in PA is like pissing on a nuclear meltdown. I realize you have to start some where but the PA weenies are just stupid, like testing exhaust in some counties. It was a racket to the companies selling the machines to the unfortunate counties to kickback to Harrisburg. The Machines did not work when they were new but garages were forced to buy them ot remain an inspection station

My favorite new Rendell racket is the fact that he pushed for the gambling and won. when the companies he got money from did not win the license he put everything on hold until he could re write the qualifications, then he added that the casinos could not even buy the gambling stuff from the manifacture. They have to buy it thru middle men who, oh yeah, made big donations to his campaign. Then he hired the gambling enforcement agency even though there is no gambling yet. they are getting paid full time and have no job. In PGH the son of his western PA re-election agency was hired as an agent with no college (a requirement) and then tried to throw his badge to get him and his underage friends in to bars in PGH.

Any emissions or gambling in PA is just a kickback to the democratic machine in Harrisburg

Not trying to be a smartass (or dumbass) depending on how you look at it...

But, how does one regulate this???? Someone follows with a stopwatch or the car automatically would cut off??????

I suspect something like that. How do they know you've spent 4 hours in a 2 hour parking space? They monitor. We could just be like NY and completely cut off diesel idling.

It would log it and fine the owners or something like that. Or more simply they would hire idle patrollers. Who would drive around and find trucks idling and sit there with a camera and then arrest them after 15 minutes.

Some things just aren't thought through very logically and are "feel good" measures at best.

Anti-Idling Resolution

By concerned representatives of the transportation industry in Cumberland County

Recognizing the important advantages of eliminating unnecessary diesel engine idling, we agree to promote better air quality by doing the following:

Administer anti-idling training to drivers and owner operators in our fleets

Post “no unauthorized idling” signs in highly visible areas

Inform drivers that enter the premises of the anti-idling policy by signage, verbal or written notice

Notify contracted pickup and delivery companies of our anti-idling policy (this would apply to warehouses, distribution centers)

Monitor and reinforce with the drivers and companies that don’t comply.

Actually those areas of Central Cali have crap air quality, not because of vehicles, but because they are heavy AG areas....Even if everyone walked the air would still be jacked.
