I've been researching roof top cargo baskets for a while now, trying to find the right one best suited for my needs.
I had the Yakima Load Warrior on my last rig and liked it very much. That's what I was planning on getting for my H3, That is until
I saw the one that StarsnBars purchased for his H3 and sent him a pm to get a little more info. After checking out the Rola cargo basket I decided that it was the one.
Well anyway, I finally received it Friday (via UPS).
Just the right size! (w/the 18" extension I purchased it measures about 74" long X 41" wide X 4" deep ) I'll be mounting my bike racks off to each side of the basket, off-road lights front and rear, hi-lift jack, multi tool w/ shovel, axe and pick and also ski racks.

Thanks for the info StarsnBars! :beerchug:

(Sorry, I had to crop the sh*t out of the pic too get it to fit! POS!)

No, easy install. I measured the distance between the rails and made a couple of adjustments before I put the basket on top. then measured from side to side to get it even and tightened it up. weighs about 50 lbs.
I used silicone on all of the seems and screws to keep the water out of the inner walls of the tubing.
it fits solid on the Yakima crossbars.

Check out www.etrailer.com (http://www.etrailer.com)
The Rola baskets are made in Australia but, etrailer is one of their distributors. I only paid $200.88 (basket, extension, s&h)

What mounts will you use for the HiLift, shovel, axe & lights? Do they sell mounts for that specific rack?

The cross bars and towers are Yakima and they do fit right into the factory roof rails!

It is a great looking rack at a great price.

Can the Rola be mounted directly to the roof rails or are crossbars the only mounting option?

I would like to avoid using the crossbars and prefer the compact installation directly to the rooftop.

Thanks for the insight.

Could you measure the highest point off the roof to hightest point of basket if you are using the stock Hummer rails. Need to see if I have to cut a groove in the garage header! I saw that rack and wondered how it worked out. Great timing.

No, it can only be mounted to a crossbar set up!
I opted for the Yakima crossbars so i can attach my Yakima bike racks and ski racks.
You could probably weld up some custom mounts. but remember you need some room between the roof and basket so you can dry the roof after washing.

I too got the Rola. Tonight at 6:30 CDST. I also got a set of cross rails. Aries which I think are the same as OEM. I had to back up a page when ordering and I failed to see it reset to bright. Oh well, with quality of powder coating on things I have been getting I think the bright anodized will hold up better. Just a little Bling. I refinish aluminum masts and booms for sailboats so I could etch them and put a finish of black later. I have a sunroof and I ordered the Rola extension piece. One piece took a hit where they slide together but I smoothed it out. the powder coat popped off there. I fixed it. I lined it up at the back of the sunroof. It hangs over in the back but I found when the door is open it makes it great to climb up. It would add some drag (like that matters) but a plexiglass piece in back would maybe blow off the rear window in dusty conditions?? Like the old station wagon spoilers, ha ha.
I have two complaints. When attaching the rails to the mounts using the bolts supplied, lock washer and flat washer the threads do not reach. They do with out the lockwashers. I just went ahead and put locktight on them. Nothing like a kid with a new toy with some assembly required! Must be Christmas. The other thing was each mount had two plastic disks that it was to slide on. They had ridges molded on them to fit into the mounts but kept falling out. I put a little silicon sealer on them to make them stay. Its dark here in "Central America" for posed pictures but I have some in the shop. Its also cold. One thing I never got anybody to reply to was how high is it about the roof with oem style rails? Its about, cause its hard to see, 3/4" between roof and bottom of rail. I like the low profile. Overall about 7 1/2" to top of basket rails. My shop has a 10' door because I was thinking. My garage only has 8' cause I was too lazy to move the header when I remodeled. Oh well I have 16" on the 10' and about 4" on the 8'. Thats with my 33.1 tires and 8 turns on the torsions. So most folks should be good to go, unless you have 21 inches of snow like those folks in Colorado and drive like you going in the Batcave!
I tried to answer the questions I had before doing this. I hope I helped and did not get too long. Sorry

third shot. Another reason I like this rack is the width. The trails I go on most that lean hard makes it real close on the top edge of the roof. This will be no problem. I have to fold my mirrors in when Im shotgun trail guide following Jeeps. To pick up after carnage. See last photo.

See how safe I was back in the back. I ran up to help and left my camera to be polite. Then when I got up there and they were ok I went back and got my camera. I really parked back there cause I watch a lot of tv and turned over cars in the movies, "always" blow up real good, sometimes more than once. I was not even in 4wd yet!

Fantastic thread! Great rack that doesn't cost a thousand dollars (Gobi and Amstar are you seein' this? Looks like everyone's not that gullible after all!) :giggling:

Did you get pics of driving up that ledge? After all, there's no way that you outwheeled that jeep!:clapping:

Nobody ever flipped there before. It was wet and he was overpowering it and slid to the left. The left front tire fell off the top and whoopsee! I go that way all the time to get to the top of the mountain and the tougher trails. I did it in 2wd when it was dry but had to use 4wd that day. This a shot of me coming up the hill from another Hummer that had never tried it before. The other jeeps waited to see if I made it. You should see the looks at the office when they tell Jeep drivers to follow that white Hummer. Im gloating here but being careful. Paybacks are hell ya know.

OK guys, I ordered the Rola rack and extension last night through e-trailer.com. They have a special on shipping - 99 cents for UPS ground. I just wanted to let you know that I'm holding you completely accountable for my decision. Can't wait to get it on.

Merry Christmas to me, Merry Christmas to me.

Guess I should have spent more on my wife's present, huh?

What crossbars are you going to use? Something I did not touch on was the OEM style. The rubber strip that comes on them appears too long. Im guessing if its like boat trim it will shrink. I left them a little long but had to cut a little so the cap would fit on the end. I just pulled the end up to get a screw driver in there for the screws that are too short.
Im also wondering about the wimpy self tapping screws that hold the extension and back piece on. I may go back and put SS bolts with nyloc nuts on there. Vibration on or off road with a load could cause them to back out. Just a thought.

Oh for you following the slight diversion, here is the other Hummer with a different rack. This is where the Jeep rolled over. The Hummer driver just got his H3 and when we got to the top he said ("were you in 4wd?) then asked how to put it in low and lock it. We had a blast. He learned a lot. Get it he made it in 2wd!! It of course looks pretty flat here but its all of 2 feet. Hmmm 18 inches is what the "wall" at the Hummer track is ?

Your order is in transit to our distribution facility and should ship in the next 7 days.

If you have any questions you can reach me at cs@etrailer.com

Thanks,

cs@etrailer.com

So what they really sent me was THEIR order confirmation. It should ship in the next 7 days. Let's see....ordered 3 days ago, ships in 7 more, then 4 more days or so to arrive here...That figures to about 2 weeks. Well, that's not exactly what I was expecting. 34510

I guess that's what you get when you pay 99 cents for shipping.

My shipping was free. It came from Missouri and Im in Arkansas. I got it in three days! Its priced cheap because nowhere on it does it say H3 Hummer. Those precious words multiply things by a minimum of 3x. I also like the crinkle finish. I figured shipping from Australia would have been about what this costs. The cross bars are high because you have those letters in a little baggy. I couldn't resist I put them on. Oh no Bling! I like the black stuff but I don't want it to look like a 49 Chevy! It is welded really smooth and is plenty heavy to hold what I can lift up there.

Crash ?
