View Full Version : Wind vibration noise

I had to drive up to Edmonton Canada for a Wedding last weekend. On the way up we hit 50-60 mph cross winds. Something around my windshield started to vibrate bad. Now it happens anytime I hit a cross wind or above 70 mph.
I believe it's the windshield wippers or the plastic trim under them vibrating on the windshield. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem.

I get the same "farting" noise, especially with gusty crosswinds. I assume it is my marker lights or the poorly fitting A-pillar mouldings. Do you have marker lights on your vehicle?

No marker lights on mine. I originaly thought it was the Apillers too but mine are tight.
I'm taking mine to the dealer tomarrow because of a bad O ring on the gas cap. It's making the check engine light come on if I'm not careful about how I put the cap on.

There have been several posts on this issue. It's the moulding above the windshield. When you hit 65+ mph, the wind gets under it somehow and makes almost a shattering noise. Mine happens on the mid to left side. I thought it was the left A pillar for a year. My Service Mgr (dealer) told me finally that a notice/bulletin had come out about it and they have been on back order. Should be anytime now ..I've been waiting a few months already. And, no, I don't have marker lights (yet).

So I guess I need:

New roof rails (cracked), new A-pillars (poor fit), new marker lights (noise problem) AND a new upper windshield moulding. :( Is there anything I can keep? Maybe the antenna? :crying:

got the same thing here. It's just a pain to go to the dealer and have it all replaced. Mine are cracked, loud, look like sh#t too. I have roof lights too that doesn't help either.

Just went by the dealer. New roof rails and Apillars are on order. They should be in this week. Will probubly get them put on next week.
The Apillar is shapped like an inverted L. The small tail section at the top is what was vibrating.
Thanks to all for the input.

Gotta love Jerry Seiner in Salt Lake. Excelent service.

My A piller vibrates when going greater than 70mph with cross winds.

It looks like the glue may have come loose?

mine does the same. I just had my cracked roof rails replaced but i'm not sure how much of them they replaced... it seemed to help, but it definitely didn't solve the problem.

I have the same issue with my H3. Have taken it to the dealer several times and they've tried to repair/replace parts but it still has the annoying noise. I too hear it most when doing above 65mph. Sounds like the windshield is gonna fly off.

I spend lots of time driving the beautiful PA turn pike. At 70 MPH it sounds like the window is ready to blow out. With a friend, we determined it was wind under the trim. More annoying, I have a head liner rattle right over my head. The dealer was to look at it when they replaced my roof rails (yes, 7 months and 8 visits to the dealer they finally replaced them). I figure next July and 5 more dealer visits they should have the head liner rattle fixed.

Replacing the A pillars and roof rails won't solve that problem. I had all replaced. Wind is getting underneath the top windshield moulding. I had tried to explain that to my Service Mgr. Finally, many months later (late summer), he told me it IS a problem with that moulding and the dealership received a notice about it. I should be getting my new one in shortly. I heard back from the dealer 2 weeks ago.

it gets pretty bad sometimes , bout all we have figured works is slowin down . seems anytime the wind speed gets close to a hundred MPH mine sounds like its getting torn apart ;) dont think they were tested over 90 mph in wind tunnel tests . but oh so nice with a heavy tail wind ;) :beerchug:

So maybe it wasn't my marker lights, but my A pillars two weekends back, when the winds were doing their thing.

deserth3 you were within 3 blocks of my house when you drove I-15 past Great Falls.

I didn't have the time. It was haul tail up, meet the bride, meet the inlaws, watch my son get married and haul tail back.
I did get interogated by Canadian customs for 45 minutes. They somehow couldn't believe a H3 at 11 pm wasn't smuggling something. Next time I wear a turban.

Westhillsat next time I'll have to stop and meet you. I went through last Wednesday. Are the winds up that way normaly that strong. In Canada there were semi blown over.

I also never knew tumble weeds run around in hurds. BUt the Hummer took them on and kicked but.:jump:

Facts on wind up here:

http://www.ci.great-falls.mt.us/about_gf/dyk.htm

"What Wind? On July 18, 1884, Mrs. Kate Beachley, who on that date became the third white woman to arrive in Great Falls, commented on how hard the wind was blowing. Everyone laughed. Later, Mrs. Beachley realized that the "wind" was only a breeze by local standards."

http://www.greaterfalls.com/index.php/2006/11/13/when-the-wind-blows/

This site states

"And speaking of windy?how many of you know that Great Falls is one of the windiest cities in America? It?s true: various sources place us at #4 (http://www.greatfallstribune.com/communities/overview/index.html), #2 (http://science.enotes.com/science-fact-finder/weather-climate/chicago-windiest-city), #7 (http://www.funtrivia.com/askft/Question4079.html), and even #1 (http://jenlars.mu.nu/archives/007144.html)!
And despite common belief, Chicago?s designation as ?The Windy City (http://science.enotes.com/science-fact-finder/weather-climate/chicago-windiest-city)? does not mean ?wind? in the atmospheric sense - that appelation was likely applied in honor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windy_City%2C_Origin_of_Name_%28Chicago%29#Politic s) of Chicago?s politicians and civic braggarts, although some do indeed credit the wind and lake breezes. But the fact remains: Great Falls is truly windier than just about every other place in America (including Chicago) - and I love it!"

I never did like the wind all that much  :D

Greetings all!

Does anyone have the TSB or another GM reference number for the pillar rattle/roof rail issues? I believe my H3's passenger side rails are finally exhibiting this problem. My warranty has expired. Was the problem covered under a defect clause?

Thanks!
Chris

Would be nice, cause mine sounds like CHIT. Or like someone is taking a never ending CHIT.

I've been dealing with it since 06, had my roof markers "fixed" a few times under warranty, had the cracked moulding replaced like most others. They never did fix this issue and eventually I gave up.
