View Full Version : Another 37" tire question

I've had the 37" PJ Dirt Grips on for a while now and it's tire replacement time again so I figured I'd ask the group their opinion. I'm looking for something more agressive than the stock ATs but not quite as loud as the PJs I have now. Are the BFG MTs somewhwere in the middle? MT-Rs? Otherwise I'm seriously considering the 37" ATs...the PJs, while an awesome tire, were just too loud I think for my daily drivers.

Thanks,

-John

I'm not sure what you consider loud, but by my standards, the Toyo M/Ts are very quiet, more so than BFG M/Ts.

I'd consider the ATs very very quiet...the PJs started out as just a hum but as they quickly got to the point where the resonance was really annoying at highway speeds. Hoping someone else here has had the PJs and could give me a comparison to some of the other tires.

I have heard that the Toyos were pretty quiet...but IIRC they only come in a 13.5 width and I'm looking to stick with the stock rims and avoid as much rubbing as possible.

I've also got some concerns about snow and ice...they PJs were pretty good for mudders with some siping in the tread, unlike the BFG M/Ts.

I guess as much as I hate to admit it I'm headed more and more towards the 37" ATs...

I have had about every off road tire in the world it seems. The PJ's are a quiet tire at first (when you are used to a super swamper) but they do get louder as they wear down (not uncommon). I would recommend the Toyo but I understand you want a 12.5 width. Go with either a Goodyear MT/R (agressive looking yet amazingly quiet) or the BFG mud (also agressive but much quieter than a PJ). I would be concerned about going with an A/T after having a M/T tire. I would bet money that you will NOT be happy with the look. I did that once myself with the Toyo A/T. If it were me, I would go with the BFG and have them siped(well actually the Toyo but you want a 12.5 :D).

I swear by Procomp Xterrains. Of course, being in Dallas, I have no experience with them in the snow.

They do very well with Rocks, Mud and Pavement, and are very quiet with a decent life span (30K-35K depending on how much rubber you require).

They also come in the 12.5 width.

They are a little more expensive, though.

X2. They also have a 40001 mile treadware warranty with them.

EDIT: I didn't read. sorry. I have the Procomp Extreme AT's.

I don't believe the Xterrains have any mileage warranty.

sorry, I meant the Extreme AT's. I didn;t read all the way through.

Great...thanks gang. I loved the PJs til they got about halfway through their effective lifespan. Really on the fence about the noise versus performance issue. Trying to get the best balance between day to day liveability, offroad perf. and snow traction.

Although her in MA we're having the warmest Dec on record with no snow in sight yet...

I love my cooper STT's. they are 12.50 and do very well on rocks, and mud. Also, they were a little noisy at first, but they have since quieted down to nearly the same sound as the stock AT's. Mileage went down by 1 MPG (or at least that what the CPU says). It could be that I haven't recalibrated for the tire size. But there are no real downsides IMO.
