View Full Version : 5 speed with 35's--gearing???

Hey guys, I'm new here, so please excuse. I'm looking seriously at the H3 base model with a 5 speed, the adventure package puts the vehicle out of my price range, so that is not an option. The automatics come w/ 4.56 gears, if I am not mistaken, and the 5 speeds come with 4.10's. I've heard the vehicle is mildly underpowered and want to know if anyone has ran 35" tires on a manual tranny and if it would become a slug if so equipped? Thanks.

Supposedly 5 speeds have 4:56 rear end ratio too, but that's not what published earlier. 35's and a 5 speed will probably result in the 5th gear not being very usable.

All models have 4:56 gears in the axles. The difference is in the t-case, with the Adventure package having the lower 4.10 geared low range. The manual tranny also has different gearing than the auto but I don't have the numbers handy.

As for the underpowered statement.....:yawn:

I only say underpowered because I also plan to tow a 17' Sea Ray. It could never be as bad as my '04 wrangler w/ the 33's and a 4 banger--only kept that thing for 8 months.

Definately better than the 4 banger. I dont know what the weight of that boat is? They say 4500lbs max towing, but Im sure a bit more would fine, and would depend on the type of trailer too, dual axle, single. 4.56's in the axles help us out a lot. You'll be fine.

If you need to tow, get a v8 later in the year, can't afford that? used H2's comming down in price now.

V8??! I've heard lots of rumors, but yet to hear of a release date. Is this a for sure thing or are we all still speculating? That would be bad ass and worth the extra $$, it just depends on if I could convince the wife...

I dont think there is a confirmed release date either. I hope this doesn't become the subject of this thread. 08! 09! Taste great, less filling! :giggling:

NO, could be worse than 4banger wrangler, h3 is much heaver and only 5banger. For sure NOT a tow rig. I got rid of mine too,....4 months.

Bull****, it's a great tow rig for nearly everything most people will use it for. I've towed a 19' fishing boat, pop-up camper trailer, quads, and a 6k+ lb trailer full of firewood. It towed fine, and that's comparing to my 2500HD Suburban, which can tow something like 10k lbs. IMy old 4.0L Cherokee isn't even in the same league.

Is it fast, no, but I'm not getting into any speed races pulling a trailer, and for a daily driver, I'm impressed with how stable it is towing long and/or heavy loads (it's actually MORE stable than my suburban in some situations). Anyone who tows a lot will agree that stability is significantly more important than speed or acceleration (or even tow capacity unless you are towing a big camper or horse trailer).

(oh yeah, and I'll be upgrading to the V8 if/when it ever comes out)
