Well, it's finally happened. I got my first check engine light today. Reached over to the glovebox and grabbed the old manual and it stated that my gas cap might not have been tightened all the way. Now I did get gas on Saturday so I'm wondering why it would have taken two days to finally kick in gear. Regardless, I went back there and tightened it up. My only other concern is that the damn Kroger gas had some water in it. So we will see... 14,571 miles and counting...

HIt Onstar button. As long as CEL isn't blinking you should be ok to drive until you get to dealer

Just went through all of this crap TWICE! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
Than on the way home from Moab it decided to bog down and kill the engine (on Vail Pass). Called OffStar and they said it had to do with my PCM had thrown four codes. Offstar rep told me I "may have reduced engine power." No ****? I couldn't even push the gas pedal down to get it to hold at 1500 rpm without the engine killing. So we loosened the gas cap, pulled the two PCM fuses, tried to start the truck, put them back in, and made it home. Hummer Roadside picked it up today with a flatbed. At only 4500 miles and this being the third time I have had "Emissions Issues" I really hope they get it fixed this time and soon. I have five days worth of Moab dust to clean off/ out of that thing. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Did it run better after taking gas cap off? The dealer should give you a complete report on why you're having these issues and the corrective action they've taken. That's uncalled for in a vehicle with 4500 miles.

But here's a ray of sunshine, make sure the DEALER washes the truck for you! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If you leave your gas cap loose, the reason it can take a few days for the light to come on is this. The computer looks for 2 consecutive failures before it will turn the light on. It doesn't always run the test every time you drive also, it has to have certain criteria met before it can run the test (temp, speed, etc..).
That is why it often take a day or two.
As far as the problem with no power. If your truck ever does that, shut the truck off, wait about 10 seconds and start it back up. It will probably be fine then. Sometimes the Pcm and the elctronic throttle motor will lose communication for a millisecond, and then go into that default mode. Some trucks can have a updated calibration programmed into them to help prevent this miscommunication.
Hope that clears this up.
Let us know what your dealer does, or doesn't do.

disconnecting the battery won't clear codes, or reset a check engine light. If you have the problem described above, it should be cleared off by just shutting it off. If for some reason it still acts up, disconnecting the battery is a good try.

Well, the morning after I posted, I was heading to the gym and dialed up Onstar. They ran a diagnostic and determined that it was the gas cap being loose. I must've been paying more attention to the chick filling up her BMW (getting ready to go to work over at the ahem, Sports Bar...) than my gascap... So let that be a lesson...
