It's interesting that you all found the photos and images great until I let you know that I don't actually like the H3. I'm sorry that many of you do not understand why the H3 is not a good off-road platform. It really is too bad that many here like to resort to calling names for lack of better ammunition.

I love how you run completely run over a small tree after landing.
Great pictures and it looks like you had a blast for the day!
This, the video and pictures, is the reason why I did not want to purchase a used car and certainly not one rented out for this use. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I think you made a great investment by purchasing the insurance. The problem is that you left me with the itch to do the same thing with my own truck (http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/2671031121/m/2951016161).

Kind of reminds me when people would rent Shelby Mustang GT350s from Hertz in 1966 and take them out at race them on the weekends. I had a good friend (OK maybe someone closer than a good friend) that rented on a Friday took out the passenger seat and carpet, took off the air cleaner and spare tire, raced it on a Satuday, replaced the interior, cleaner and spare tire and returned it Sunday night. Nobody would touch those GT350H Mustangs when Hertz sold them for around $3,000 and look at their value now.
I think renting an H3 is a great way to decide if you're not sure. IMHO these machines sell themselves!

I'm sorry, I didn't fully explain. My truck is in the shop and the dealership's Enterprise office offered me the H3. I had fun with it, but it is ill-suited for heavy-duty use such as rock crawling or even going overland at high speeds. The H3 is too softly sprung and the suspension bottoms out and slams into the bumpstops. It is a very disconcerting experience.
I thought the H3 would make a nice little truck for my wife, but after driving it, I will not buy one.
Here's my rig. I don't have any crazy photos because I am usually by myself.
That rental looks like a base or lux. With the adventure offroad package It would have been better for major offroading.

I would have to agree but even as a base model it is better suited for offroading than most of the 4x4s on the market right now.

That doesn't help the suspension one bit. All packages get the same soft suspension.
Nevertheless, I didn't start the thread to start a debate over the inadequacies of the truck. I just posted some stuff I thought you guys might enjoy.

"The H3 is too softly sprung and the suspension bottoms out and slams into the bumpstops. It is a very disconcerting experience"
Not true at all about the suspension being the same on adventure and base/lux. See July Hurf posts, but the spring rates are stiffer on the Adventure package (4550# rear axle leaf vs 3200# base and lux)and the shocks have more suppression with the Adventure and more travel. That's a 40% higher spring rate. Many people here have chosen the base or lux after deciding the Adventure was a little too firm for their likes.
I have driven the Adventure only once as a loaner for three days when mine was being serviced, but offroad the difference is noticeable, while on the highway I would say minimal.
HummerJim
02-23-2006, 09:16 PM
After a call to my favorite Lynch Hummer Guy the Adventure has foaming suppression in the shocks and an anti hyper extension feature that base and lux do not have.

G-wagen, Thanks for the pictures and the video, they were excellent. Would you even consider doing that air trick with your Benz? I think that the H3 will out perform your rig off road > not on road, and for 35000.00 the H3 rocks. I have lux/offroad pacs in mine and I have yet to bang the tires into the wheel wells but I also dont go flying with it either. Yes it rides a little stiff on the road but I love it.

The rest of the pictures on this site speak for themselves. The H3 is more capable offroad than his Beverly Hills soccer moms SUV will ever be. Thats why all 4 of his tires will always be on the concrete. But the pictures are still cool, whether you like the car he drives or not.

There was a post awhile back about ghey ass H3 commercials. Well that video would make one hell of a commercial. Better than that one freaky H3 commercial with the floating ballet people and their stupid stools. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I mean take this video and mix it up with some other off-roading vids of H3 owners tearing it up in the woods or in the desert and compile them together and mix it with some cool rock music and Bam! You have a real H3 commercial.

It's not a matter of thick skin or not. It is a matter of knocking someone who doesn't know what the hell they are talking about when trying to knock the ride. I loved the video but that doesn't change that he doesn't know what he is talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if he did it hoping the H3 would break something just so he could share it. If he turned around and did the same thing with soccer mom mobile and showed the video then his opinion would care at least a little weight.

It's funny that you claim that I don't know what I'm talking about and turn around and make an incredibly ignorant statement about the Galaendewagen. It is widely heralded as the best civilian off-road vehicle with the exception of the H1. I take mine off-road 2-3 times per week. It is usually covered in mud. How do you think I know about the place I took the H3?
The G500 is far more composed off-road than the H3. That is a fact. I have taken the same jump in my G500, but at 6,000 lbs, it is too heavy to get air. It has never once broken on me and the alignment has never even been affected. The H3 is totally hosed. The front wheels are pointing in different directions and the transfer case sounds like it's full of gravel. I beat on the G500 harder than any of the guys I go off-roading with. It gets scratched and scraped because it is a truck, plain and simple. It has coil-sprung solid axles and three locking differentials. The H3 cannot compete with it. I don't have video of the H3 failing to make it up my favorite slope that the G500 tackles without skipping a beat. My truck currently has the stock street tires on it and the ride is much better over land than the H3.
That being said, there's no need for you to talk about that which you have no experience with. I've played hard with both and the H3 does not even come close to being in the same league. Of course this is an H3 board, so there will be cries of 'impossible' because my statements are heresy. There's only one person that tried to have a rational discussion about the suspension of the H3 and the rest of the board just started to talk **** about a truck they are unfamiliar with. That is ridiculous.

G-Wagen, no worries about the capabilities of the 500, yes it is a great truck and top notch at that. But the H3 is a third of its cost. Can you tell me honestly how ****ed was the H3 after you jumped it. And dont you think that your 500 would have experienced some problems if you were able to jump it and land it at the same speed. G-wagen,
I loved the video and we all love pics of Hummers being used as they were designed. You are entitled to your opinion but why don't you try to back it up. Whether you are or not, your posts make you sound like a troll. I do this...I do that...I wheel harder than anyone in the world...my rig is the best off road rig there is...but I don't have any pics to show you of me wheeling my vehicle. You have got to admit, you sound like just about every other troll that has crawled in here with that crap. I hope you actually do wheel your rig but unless you can back up your claims with at least some pics, no need to bring it up. Next time, get an H3 with adventure package and see the difference.
You're officially retarded.
You come to our forums, knock down the H3 and expect us to just accept your UNEDUCATED opinion?
You need to get some facts straight.
- You were off roading a BASE package H3. You want to do some hardcore wheeling? Go for the adventure package. If it's still not to your standards, try the H2. Since it's closer to the price range of your G-Spot wagon, I think that would be a more fair comparison, don't you? (Oh but wait, this isn't about fair comparisons, it's about you showing us you own a G-Spot Wagon. We're all very impressed)
- You're too chicken to wheel your Ghey-Wagon, and it's obvious. You use the excuse "I always wheel alone" BULLSH*T! You rent an H3, and you practically have a news team covering it, but when you wheel with your Ghey-Wagon you're alone?
Bring your boyfriends along to film you doing the EXACT same thing in your G-Wagon. You're so sure of your top heavy pimp mobile, I'd love to see the outcome.
And I don't buy the BS of the H3 being hosed.
Insurance or not, the rental place can tell if you've abused it beyond the terms of the insurance contract, and they'll be on your ass if any of what you say is true.
You're just smearing mud trying to get some leverage, but guess what kid. YOU'RE DROWNING.
So, are you manly enough to accept the challenge of videotaping your wagon doing the same jump? If everything you said was accurate, I wouldn't see any problems accepting the challenge.

GWagen thought the video was GREAT and saved it. That would have made an excellent commercial, but I'm sure the do gooders would have gone nuts like they did a year ago with the boy driving the Corvette commercial, which I thought was KEWL~

Tough trucks make for tough crowd. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Its pretty cool, about all this talk over these pics and what G-wagen had to say. Give credit were credit is due, the video is great and so are the still shots. Who gives a rats ass about his 500wagen. The video tells the truth, http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif It so happens that I saved the video and the pics, and becuase the rented H3 looks exactly like my lux/offroad pac H3-sunroof > I sent the video to all my freinds. My brother called me at 7:30 yesterday morning (pissed) to ask me why I didnt take him with me four wheeling, SO I AM GETTING SOME MILAGE OUT OF G-wagens rental. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Top Gear recognises the G-wagon as the ULTIMATE POSER-MOBILE (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2403926624418617360&q=g-wagon) (<--linked)
- virtually useless offroad!
(unless you stick to puddles no deeper than 4")
...the only way they would even look at the G-Wagon is if you first took the "25 year old lumbering box" and had AMG specially tune it!

I keep getting tempted back to this stupid thread. I looked at the specs for the ugly G-wagen and it doesn't even have a sunroof available.
I'm still trying to convince my wife that she shouldn't laugh every time she sees one because they cost three times as much as an H3 and the owners may be sensitive about being laughed at.
Best regards, Happy Jack

I've have read thru most of this thread, so I hope I am not repeating and I do apologize for keeping it alive, but I have to say this. Legitimate off-roading is NOT trying stunts at fast speed on unchallenging terrain! That is for motorbikes and Evil Knievel. Real 4-wheelin is trying to cross thru challenging terrain at pretty much the minimum speed (mud & river runs a little faster than rock crawling). That's what the H3 is designed for and if you try to jump it and it breaks, SO WHAT!!! The G-Wagon owner has probably long since left the building, but let's try to attack what he says & does.
By the way, How many H3 owners are so lame as to rent a Rubicon and beat the heck out of it and then brag about how it broke in a Jeep forum?

Im a technician for Mercedes-Benz here in california. Im also a proud owner of a H3 Lux, adventure package & 5 speed. So far every G-Wagen own Iv talked to thats came into the shop, regrets buying it. They have problems like any other car. As far as off-roading, iv been out with other G-wagens from the shop. G-wagens have less ground clearance and cant flew
for ****. Also have too high of a center of gravity. They also use the same powerplant and transmission as whats found in the family E-Class.
