View Full Version : Can anyone 'splain how to measure "Arch"??

I need to measure the arch on my springs for my add-a-leaf,.

I looked it up, it shows what the measurement is, but I hope I do not have to take off my leafs to obtain the measurement.

Do I?

Did you forget HS Geometry. Get out your protractor and compass and measure the angle. Then plot it. You should be close to factory spec.

Thank you so much, I know how to arrive at the measurement, can I do it crawling under my truck? Or do I have to remove it and measure laying on the ground?

Check with manufacturer of product. Would make sense to not have to remove it first. However reality and Murphy's law state other factors. Like measure 2x cut once!:grouphug:

The spring place should know what the stock specs (width, length, thickness, spring rate and center pin location) are. Then they can make the new spring add a leaf or a whole spring pack. You may nee longer U-bolts too.

Are they going to do the install?

Im pretty sure you measure at full droop too, so jack up the rear end first. :beerchug:

What needs to be measured? Can't you do it with a flexible tape while lying underneath the truck?

Unforunately you have to do the math above to insure proper spring rate. You could have 62" leafs on 2 different rigs, but the distance between the hangers could be different. Effects sag, stiffness, recoil, and shock length and travel would also be effected :beerchug: etc. They take the measurements into consideration along with added rear end weight and customer preferences, if getting a custom job. DEAVER baby!:excited:

She is just doing an add a leaf, but they would still need the right measurements.

I wasn't advocating doing no math. I was really questioning if you had to remove it from the vehicle. I assume you measure the length along the spring from mount to mount (with a cloth tape) and straight line distance between the mounts....and then do some math. Do you have to do it with the load of the truck on it, or with the spring under no load?

Sorry, yeah thats what ment in previous post when I said to measure at full droop, or with the load off of the springs. :beerchug:

Generally it would be better to build a whole new spring pack made up multiple leaves than just adding an add-a leaf.

The ride would be better and the spring rate more progressive

You could also add a second stock leaf under the main leaf to give a little more load capacity. Ive done that on Jeeps and Toyotas.

One down side about springs under the axles is that the more leaves you have, the lower the u bolt spring plate and skid are as far as ground clearance
