I took my H3 into the dealer today. My steering wheel was a little to the left .. just a little, so I thought, probably wheel alignment. I was told it was .. so they aligned it and rotated/balanced my tires. The tech said my two front tires had wear on them .. and wanted to replace them. :eek: I could not see any visible wear. He said if not today then sometime before another 3,000 miles. I have 24,000 on it now. WHAT?? Is this possible? I never felt any problem with wheel alignment, no pulling, nothing with the wheels. I don't off-road in my H3 .. just street driving. (I know, I know...) Has anyone here, with normal street driving, had to replace tires already at 24k?

Seems a bit soon. Did the do the Lincoln Penny check? Proper alignment and balance are important for your tires but I feel weekly pressure checks are even more important. Over & under inflation can cause very fast tire wear...

Sounds a little strange. Even in the old days when I would drive like a maniac, spinning the tires on a regular basis, I would get at least 30K out of my tires. Sounds like they're trying to make some money on ya.
I agree with RYD - do the penny test.

Hmmm did you rotate the tires before 24,000?.
I rotated mine at 8,000 and at 24,000 im now at 31,000 and they look and ride great:D ,they are getting rotated again at 40,000.
Im hoping for at least 50 to 60k before replacement.
Doesn't sound right :confused:

yesterday i switched to 35s and from the look of the old ones they looked like they can go at least 20K more miles, they have 12k on them. Why would they need to be replace if they have no visible wear, whats the problem?

RYD, what is the penny test? I don't know what the deal is ... earlier this week I went in for new wipers and an oil change. They did a 21 point test and when I was leaving I was given a sheet of the results. There was a comment by the tech to check the alignment. The Service Writer said alignment is usually done at 30K, so don't worry. As I was driving home I noticed the steering wheel turned slightly to the left instead of straight, on a straight road. I hadn't noticed it earlier. I called the Service Writer back and she said they could check it today, and put the new wipers on (sionce they were out of stock when I was in the other day). The tech checked the alignment and said the fronts had to be aligned and tires rotated/balanced. And, by the way, I did have them rotated at 8K .. and now again at 24K. The tires were never below 35psi .. I have an automatic. I asked the service writer why I'd need new 2 fronts at 24k? She said it's a 4 wheel drive and they wear differently. She said it's not unusual to have them changed at 24k. Of course, I came to the forum and I've learned otherwise. :twak: Straight street driving, up and down some hills (roads) .. but no off-roading in this H3. Please let me know about the penny test. It's not a joke, is it?

Take a penny a stick Lincolns head in the groove of your tread. If you can't see the top of his head, your tires are fine, if you can see the top of his head theyr'e worn.
Now keep in mind that is a "dated" way to check your tires for wear.
Now a days most tire manufacturers have "wear bars" in the tires, so when your tires are worn you see a bar running across the tread.
If they aren't worn, embarass the guy who is trying to sell you new tires at 20K.

Well... I've gotten less out of a set of tires... 1986 S-10 4 speed... I wanted new tires bad though.. I managed to trash the OEM Uniroyals in only 5000 miles.. And I rotated them regularly..
I'd take it by a reputable tire shop and ask for a second opinion..

I was at the dealer at 30,000 miles for another roof rail replacement and they said i needed the both rear fluids changed ,trans case and tranny fluid for $1,000(they said it was maintanence).
I passed and will do it all myself at 50,000.:D
By the way factory wiper blades suck,next time upgrade to a High quality blade.(I know you can handle a wiper blade install:giggling: )
I got the Piaa silicone blades they been on a year and still work fine,factory ones lasted 8 or 9 months.The rear one went first and I never use it.
Theres a tread somewere about wiper blades.
Couldnt hurt to get a second opinion on tires. Or take a pic of a penny in the lowest part of the tire tread and post it .:beerchug:

That's the penny test, but it is no longer a valid test. The penny test is basically the required wear bars; 2/32" of tread remaining. However, if you are running a tire with only 2/32" of tread remaining, understand you will hydroplane while stopping. Not enough groove to allow water to flow through. Most advocate 4/32" as the minimum. (If you are driving on dry pavement only, then 2/32" is probably ok.)
I have almost 25K on my two back tires, I rotated at 8K, then around 16K, then I had the two front tires replaced due to some scum bag who owned a knife, and they will be rotated sometime this month. The back tires which actually have 25K on them are at around 11-12/32" (being truck tires they come with over 15/32" of tread depth versus car tires which come with around 11/32". The tires in front that were replaced at approx. 18K at 13/32" of tread left.
I'm impressed with the wear on these tires.
My advice is have someone other than the person who recommended replacement look at the tires. Possibly the front alignment was off and they wore on the inner or outer, or the air pressure was too high and they wore on the inside.
You could also go to a local auto store and purchase a tire tread gauge, they are only a few bucks. Then take some measurements on the inside/outside/inner treads at four locations around the tire.

I had just over 39k on my 2006 when I traded it in, tires seemed to have quite a bit of life left on them. They were the Adventure package Bridgestones, maybe the Goodyears wear faster?
I never rotated the tires (don't want to start an argument, but moving tires so that they wear unevenly on purpose doesn't make much sense to me). There are several schools of thought on this, I'm sure I'm in the minority. At 39k the truck still drove and rode smoothly (never balanced the tires either). Maybe I was just lucky.
New 2007 now has about 2600 miles on it, the tires still look new. :)

I have 33K miles on my tires. I havent even rotated them once! My fronts are wearing more on the inside due to cranking the torsion bars and not getting it alighned after. Id say I have another 10k miles left in them...The rear tires still look brand new!

I've got 35k now, mostly crappy on road + maybe a couple thousand miles of off-road gravel. Rotated at about 15k miles, I don't have a tire gauge but was checking the other day and not even close to the wear bars. I keep right around 35psi, even wear all the way around, no problems - I'd guess another 10-15k (which sucks because I want to upgrade to 35s but can't justify it until I need to change tires :( )

Well, I was at the Hummer Happening we had locally yesterday and took a closer look at my tires. They had rotated the fronts to the rear last Friday. Looking closer this time, I saw that the inner part of the tread on the two tires was looking smoother than the rest of the tire. Not enough to replace the tires, but a little smoother, and only the very inner part, not center or outside. I have to wonder how it could have worn even that slightly since I've never felt any pulling right or left or experienced any wheel problems (other that rear grind I had been fighting with GM about) .. but this is the front. :confused:

I have about 27K on my adventure tires and they seem to get old and probably need to be replaced around 30-33, at least before Fall/Winter. I wonder if there is any warranty on these tires. I remember buying Michelin tires on another car with 80K mile warranty and after 40K I basically got a 50% refund.

I dumped my Goodyears on the H3 at 35,000 miles, they were only about 1/2 used up.

You've got something wrong if you can wear out these tires. I've got 53K+ miles on the bridgestones and have never rotated them. I should be able to get to 65K before I need new ones. I could probably have gotten more out of them if they had been rotated.

Man, what the hell are you guys driving on? Sandpaper in 4w-low-lock? I'm at 49,009 mi, and I still can't justify going up to 35" tires because mine AREN'T WORN DOWN ENOUGH!!! Rotate every 10K & they'll last just fine!
Maybe I need to air down to wear 'em out!

Not sure about the tire warranty. I know a few years ago, GM decided to add the tire warranty to the standard warranty, but I believe it is strickly for factory defects or defects in the tires. I do not believe it covers wear. Same as brakes. If you come in at 45K miles needing front brake pads, chances are warranty will not cover the repair. Come in with well worn tires at 30K and chances are they are not covered.
However, the tires at 24K appear to be rotted is, in my opinion, a factory defect. Possibly, when the tires were produced, the right amount of the additive that prevents premature aging of the tire was not added. I just know that tires have something added to keep the tires from aging. It is distributed inside the tire while it is flexing. That is why a tire that is not used or sits for months will start to crack (like those in this thread). The flexing allows the "stuff" to flow through the tire and keep it "lubricated."

Which tires do you have? I have the Bridgestones and I have about 42,000 miles on them and never rotated them. They only look maybe half worn. I do know that the Goodyear's (I think RT/S) are horrible tires. I had them on my last truck and they were terrible in about every road condition, even dry pavement. They have pretty bad reviews on TireRack.com. I couldn't wait to get rid of them, but they still lasted about 40,000 miles. On my last truck I replaced them with Bridgestone REVO's, which are excellent tires.

Does anyone know if the Goodyears that came with the '06 H3's MIGHT have had a recall? I looked at my tires more closely now and the two tires that WERE in front and rotated to the rear now have a weird pattern. It's the inside edges that have an approx 2 inch perfect tread, then 2 inches flattened, 3 inches perfect, 2 inches flattened, etc. ,etc. Both tires have the same pattern. I never had a problem with the front end .. it was only the rear where I had that grind sound (that is now coming back). Could this be a defect with the tires wearing that way? I'm now at about 26,000 miles. I asked the service writer at my dealer and was told they won't pro-rate ... or do a deal. :twak:

My tires are wearing just fine at 33k with duelers and I had the grind/groan on and off since 12k. .I swear I hear it sometimes but then its silent:shhh:
Time to upgrade the tires .It sucks the dealer wont do something:twak:
Check Ebay for a take off set of 33 inch duelers you might get a deal
They ride the road good,do good offroad seem to be holding up well and they look better then the base tires.

My Goodyears at 26,000 looked almost new (maybe 1/4 worn at that point). No problem with them with mostly hard street use.
