View Full Version : Bad Smell

:( I have noticed over the course of the last month that the air conditioner smells bad. I have tried everything from smelly things from Kirklands, to no rolling the windows down, recirculating the cabin air, and spraying cologne. I do know that the moisture builds up inside the air ducts and if you do no run the regular air through them after the cold air moisture has hit, then mildew can form. I have done this, but still I have the problem. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how did you get rid of it? Thanks in advance.....Jamie

GET SOME DR MASSIGILLS MIX IT IT UP TURN ON THE AC FULL BLAST SPRAY THE DUECH MIX IN TO THE AC INTAKE (THE VENTS AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE H2)IT WILL THAN GET SUCKED IN TO ALL THE HVAC VENTS AND KILL THE BACTERIA THUS ELIMINATEING THE SMELL. ON A SIDE NOTE ONE OF MY FRIENDS TOLD HIS WIFE TO CREMATE HIM WHEN HE DIES AND THAN TAKE THE ASHES AND PUT THEM IN A DUECH AND RUN HIM THROUGH ONE MORE TIME .:o

Seriously now, this works or are you f@#king with me? At this point I'm about ready to try anything. If your serious, I'm trying it, but I don't want to make matters worse. Thanks....Jamie

Hope you are just talking about trying what was done to the vent.

Same thing happened to me about a year ago. I finally looked under the hood and found where some smarta$$ had laid a dead Prius across my exhaust manifold...
Seriousy, about 2 years ago I brought my mother's MB 300 home to clean up. Mom smokes like a chimney (75 years old) and that freakin' thing smelled like a crematorium---the car not mom. Also had some moldy smoky smell coming from the vents. I sprayed Ozium freshener, regular scent, (available @ Wally World, etc...love this stuff) in the vent openings outside at the cowl and then followed up with some GM Odor Eliminator (PN 12378554) sprayed in the same vents. Keep the air on @ full HI during the process. Repeat for a couple of days and it usually takes care of the problem.

I think we finally found out where Kaz's stinky azz has been hiding....

Now if we can all get together and help Jamie pry her fat azz out of the A/C system... Maybe we can use a winch... It would have to ba a 15,000 one to "pull" it off.

Don't run the a/c on the recirculate mode.

You have to dry out whate ever is damp and stinky in there

Don't run in the recirculate mode.

I don't know much about the H2 HVAC system and how to clean it or de-odorize it.

Try some water and bleach water. Can you pour it in the fresh air intakes

I'm kinda scared to pour any kiind of fluid into the air condition system. Does it need to be a fine spray or is just pouring it ok?

What happens when it rains?

Also make sure the the drain isn't plugged with leaves etc. The drain should be under the hood back toward the fire wall and heater

Sorry I don't have an H2 so I can't give your any more advice

Chemical solutions are usually only a temporary solution since the bacteria will come back. Some vehicles are equipped with an afterblow function that helps to cure he problem.
Some areas are more prone to this problem. Some vehicle are also more prone.

Makes sense. All the moisture off the gulf here would make anything sour.

Went out this am and sprayed the outside air vents with vinegar water and Lysol mixed with the AC on high. I then drove downtown to give it a little time to circulate. By the time I returned home, it smelled sour...but a sweet sour. Not sure what to do at this point. Guess I get the GM stuff and flush it through. DAMN!!

I don't even smoke. I was wondering how hard it might be to pull the painted part off to better expose the outside vents, or if it would even be worth the trouble?

I smoke an average of four cigars per day in mine. Windows open whether 20 or 95 deg fahr. Smells like a dream in there. Kills all the skeeters and flies. MMMMhhhh, nicoteen.

Try the Onyx reserve's ,very smooth and rated a 91 or so . I have not smoked cigar's in the house or any of my vehicles since 1989 .seams the smell offends the nonsmokers .wonder what they would think if you sparked up a phatty in there ? :o

I can't believe Lysol didn't help, that was what I was going to suggest.

Is it that wet dog type of AC smell?

Yeah, it was. I had my wife go to Wally World with me the other day and we browsed the douche section for sented kinds of douche. I found one I thought wouldn't offend me too bad if it didn't work. Well, low and behold it worked! I had to use 2 of them but I did as someone had insisted and ran it on high, then I added one douche to each of the outside vents. I let it run for about 15 min, then shut it off. The next Am, the AC had no smell at all. I joked about it at work on how I had to "douche" my "Hummer", (which seemed ironic) , but bottom line....it worked for now.......Jamie

I had the EXACT same problem about a year or so ago. I tried EVERYTHING. I even went to a professional and they ran some ozone cleaner crap through it.

Tried GM's ac cleaner for vents, everything.

It almost smelled like a dead animal. I took the console apart, dash, seats, everything, I still never did find it.

It finally went away. I know that isn't much help but just trying to save you some expense.

Literally through the winter and until this summer. You have no idea how many times I took the console apart looking for a dead animal. At one point, I was pretty sure it smelled a lot like wiring burning but couldn't do a damn thing about it.
