Painting your Wheels, How to PowerPoint.

Hey Guys,

Did my wheels yesterday, and they came out GREAT if I do say so myself. Looks very nice. I'm just curious why you removed the clear coat. Did you use the same spray on material for the grill and emblems, and if so, how is it holding up.

I'm planning on doing mine before to long and had used engine enamel on other vehicles in the past and was planning on doing the same on the 3. I may go this route if it is durable. I've never had any problems with the engine enamel.

I did it to make sure I had a clean rough surface to work with, under the clear coat the aluminum is nice and rough and makes a good surface to work with, I only did the grill a couple of days ago, and seems to be holding up well, Also this stuff works well because you dont have to worry about streaks or pooling, it goes in with that nice textured finish, I like the semigloss contrast to the high gloss paint.

Also, what is the deal with using bed liner? I have never heard of this before. I started to check out the hummer forums and I have seen it mentioned a few times. Is it just more rugged and durable as opposed to paint? thanx

Nothing is gonna really bite into (etch) into the chrome, so you would need to start out with non-chrome wheels to make it worth your money

If your dead set on chrome, then you should have them chemically dipped to remove the chrome, sandblasting wont do it.

Using Line-x or Rhino coat, (Bedliner spray) is only temporary as well and will turn whitish in color in due time. If your shop doing the spray coat is any good, they will want your parts to be blasted and primer ready before they apply theyre warranted material.

If your Rig is strictly for getting dirty and not a dual purpose rig, then anything you do will be fine, but if your trying to impress the ladies, do it right.

Powder coat would be your longest lasting, and most bang for your buck method, they will media blast your rims before they powder coat, dont start with chrome rims, they wont powder coat and they cant blast them off.

Dead Set, I was trying to say, "that if your dead set on using" your existing chrome wheels its gonna be more hassles, time and money than starting out with a set of factory painted wheels, thats all.

Keep up on the powder coat guys, they are pains in the ass and get that quote in writing, Its not like they went to college to start a powder coat business :twak:


They also have Textured type powder coating, giving you the look of a Line X or Rhino coat spray look?

Nice job. I was lazy...I just took off the wheels, scuffed them hard with a scotch brite pad (one per wheel), painted them w/ three coats 5 min between coats. I just let the overspray get on the tires. One trip off road and the overspray is gone, plus you couldnt even see it when it was there.

Hey guys been a couple of months since I did this, and happy to say the bedliner is holding up well, no fading and a couple of trail dings, which I was able to cover pretty easily, I think I will do the powder coat route eventually, just a hassle since I have to put it up on blocks and rent a car for a few days. Ill probably wait till I get it lifted and leveled and have the 35's put on it and just do all that stuff at once, so im saving my nickels, but this is working fine for the time being.
