Would a 9,500 winch be good enough. I don't plan on using it all the time, but you never know when an emergency will happen...
Saw this and was thinking of droppping the $$$ on it. Hope it's ok to post external links.

PN 69501 WARN Bumper for the H2 Hummer (winch sold separately - see below)PN 69502 9.5xp winch - special design to fit the H2 bumper. 12V, 100' wire rope, hawse fairlead.

I think it does include the winch...
This is one aftermarket product that really benefits the Hummer H2 owner: the WARN Winch/Bumper Kit that's compatible with the Hummer factory grille guard. It gives you a 9,500-pound capacity, hardcore-duty, WARN 9.5xp winch. PLUS a companion heavy-duty, 1/8", 11-gauge steel bumper (with 1/4" steel mounting brackets). A durable powder coating finish keeps the bumper looking great.

It can't include the winch. Even for a group buy that would be too good to be true.
I have that set-up also. I like it, looks and works good.
Edit:
I read the ad more carefully and it does say it includes both, does seem too good to be true, but that is what is seems to say. If that is legit, it's a great deal.

I don't think that the winch is included either, I will check back because if it is then i will buy also.

CONFIRMED! That price is for the bumper only!!!
The best price I have found on that setup is $1395. And that was a pre-order whe they were first released.
Go tO Ebay if you wan that one. Sortztrailers has them for about that price. You do have to drill into your frame for that one.
If you buy it, plan on having re-powderoated before you install. They do a crap job. I have had three of them. The last one I had re-pc'd.

Thanks everyone for your replies... How necessary is a winch over some good 30 or 40,000 tow straps/shackels/snatch block/etc.

the straps wont pull you by themselves

I know that the straps won't do it alone. I don't plan on going wheeling by myself... My brother will most likely be there to pull me out or vise versa.

I guess what I'm trying to say is are there any real added benifits to having a winch over just the straps looking at a cost point of view...
If there are huge benifits over straps then I'll still drop the $$$ on a winch, but if it's all the same if someone else will most likely be around to pull then I'll just get some good straps.

I wheel with my wife. So all I need is some tow straps and a bridle.

i've wheeled with her too, she didnt like the blinders
....and what happens when both of you get stuck while trying to pull out the other?

Don't know... I've only ever gone off roading once. That's why I'm asking all these questions that seem pretty basic and probably stupid to the more experienced people on the board. I'm used to motorcycles and sports cars. Been driving those since the 1st day I got my license. So this is all new to me.

There in lies the rub. This means you wil most likely get unstuck, if you all know what you're doing and you don't get them stuck. They are called self recovery winches for a reason. I bet you can figure this one out on your own.

Winches kick a55. Straps are a necessity, a winch takes it to a new level. a winch can pull you up things you would never be able to climb on motor and traction alone. you wont need a truck at the top to pull you up, etc. You can also use it as a safety line when trying something for the first time. That way you may not flip off the mountain, etc! Then, once you figure out the line, you can try it without the winch. if you have a group with no winches and no one can make it up a certain obstacle, you have to go back. With one winch, he goes up, and then pulls everyone else up.
IMO, The warn multi mount is the most versitile as it can go on the front or rear, or be removed very easily. I have used mine on the back to pull a broken down vehicle up and on to my trailer, and to pull another truck up a hill that was too narrow to turn around on. It weighs about 60 or 70 lbs and is probably my favorite upgrade. Another time i was on a trail with a 300ft cliff on the left. suddenly I felt the front left slide down a couple of inches. I found that the earth was giving way under my tire. I hooked the winch to a tree on the right and slid my front end over three of four feet. Drivng forward or backwards may have caused me to fall down the cliff. like I said winches kick a55. Get one.
