Plastic steps on nurf bars

I'm getting my nurf bars sprayed with linex next week. Has anyone removed the plastic steps on the bars. A tech at the Hummer dealership told me that they don't come off or if you try to remove them they will break where they are connected to the bars. It seems to me that there's some type of clip holding them on. Anyone come across this? Thanks for your input.

nerf bars = tube steps (2 long, heavy pcs w/ gazillion bolts... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

My dealer took mine off to repaint the tubes. They were loose after they put them back on. I had them replaced with new ones.....try it you might get lucky
